Tips & Tricks

Alyssa’s Travel and Photography Gear

If you’ve ever wondered or asked where I got my pink selfie-stick/tripod, what camera I use, or where I got something that I’ve worn in a photo – You can find all of my actual travel gear on this page!

Most of the items can be found on Amazon, which I’ve linked on the images, and if you order something from there, I get a small commission which I really appreciate since it all goes back into my travels and content!

All of these items are exactly the same ones that I use in real life and none are listed just because the brand sponsored a post! If I don’t really use it and love it, it doesn’t make the list!

Travel Curling Iron

My hair is typically always curled, and to do that, I use a mini travel curling iron! The one I actually have is from a random store in Milan, but this is the closest one I could find online! …Unless you want to go to Milan…then you can find it a store called Dmail 😉

Extra: Voltage Converter

You might also want to get a voltage converter depending on where you’re traveling. In places like Europe, you may be fine with your products, but places with less electrical output like Asia could end up blowing a fuse on your product! This voltage converter is specifically for hair dryers and straighteners!

Photography Stuff

Sony A7Riii

My first “professional camera” is this mirrorless Sony A7Riii, which I got based on the recommendations of a handful of my favorite fellow bloggers, influencers, and photographers. I basically asked them all what professional camera I could get that was the best, and would take photos somewhat similar to the adventure ones I make with a GoPro (“but like…better.”). So far all the photos have been STUNNING even though I keep it on Auto settings since I haven’t fully learned how to do anything else, but I feel like I don’t even need to because of how great the pictures come out!

I also love that it’s not too heavy, and small enough for me to carry in my purse, as well as use on a lightweight travel tripod! Highly recommended!

Zoom Landscape Lens

I also knew nothing about the lenses you need for the fancy professional cameras, and was super confused when my colleagues tried explaining them. To be honest, I ended up going to Best Buy and having one of the guys there help me pick something out that again would “take photos similar to the ones I do with a GoPro”.

Without a question he recommended this one: a Zeiss 24-70 mm, which means it zooms in and out, and also gets a full landscape frame. For someone just starting out with a professional camera like me, this lens is perfect because you don’t have to switch it, and it can give you close up portrait shots, as well as landscape shots.

Travel Tripod

I was definitely worried that I would have to carry around a heavy, bulky tripod as opposed to the selfie-stick-tripod I use for a GoPro, but I found one like this that is super compact, less than a pound, and fits in my (big) purse! It’s really easy to expand and contract, so setting it up with my only takes just a couple of minutes! It also comes with attachments to use with a GoPro and phone!

 DJI Mavick Pro

This little thing can create photo and video wonders and is small and light enough to travel with! It’s a bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion, especially if you’re looking to start a career in blogging, social media, or video! The Mavic Pro is easy to set up and get in the air, plus has super smart robot technology that makes it nearly impossible to crash, lose, or run out of batteries!

A lot of people ask about drone regulations and stuff, and to be honest with you, I have to look them up before entering countries, but a lot of times I forget to. That’s because I have yet to get stopped with my Mavic, I assume because it folds up and looks like a video camera? But regardless, definitely do your research! I also find that looking up places where they’re illegal or banned sometimes is easier than keeping track of where they’re allowed! (From experience I know they’re banned in Budapest, Morocco, and Kenya).

Funeso Pink Selfie-Stick/Tripod                      Luxebell Selfie Stick

Funeso Pink Selfie Stick: This is the exact stick you see in my Snapchats/Instagram stories when I’m showing off “Who’s taking the picture”. It collapses to about 9inches, and has a removable tripod foot, both of which easily fit in my purse.

NOTE: They only make it in black now! But fear not, I may or may not be coming out with my own version!

Luxebell Selfie Stick: A more discrete, lightweight, and longer selfie stick pole. This brand lasted longer than most others that I’ve tried, but be sure to rinse it off and dry it if you take it in water!

iPhone 6S: I assume everyone has a smartphone already, but as I mentioned, I’m including ALL of the products I use during my travels, and my iPhone6S is one of them. I use the camera when I need a closer-up photo since the GoPro’s typically make shots look far away and don’t zoom in.

iPhone 7: The camera on the new iPhone is ridiculous, and I’d actually highly recommend it for anyone just starting out in photography, blogging or Instgramming as opposed to spending a ton of money on an expensive DSLR.

GoPro Batteries                          SanDisk Micro SD Card

GoPro Batteries: Always a good idea. Just make sure you get the right ones for the right cameras; the new GoPro Hero 5 unfortunately has a different type of battery as the earlier models.

SanDisk Micro SD Card: The annoying essential that’s a must but always confusing to figure out which one to get. Sandisk Extreme is recommended by GoPro for their cameras, and the higher memory you can get the better.

GoPro Dome

GoPro Dome: This funny looking contraption is what takes those awesome over-under water shots! That’s right, people aren’t just talented at making the water go halfway up their GoPros, the shots are done with this massive bubble like lens that you attach your GoPro to in the back!

Essential Gadgets

Portable Power Bank                                  Universal Adapter

Portable Power Bank: There’s tons of options for portable power banks that are probably cheaper than GoPro’s, but it’s the one I personally use so as promised, I’ve listed it! It stores enough battery to recharge your phone and GoPro once and you can charge them at the same time.

Universal Adapter: This little gadget is so simple yet SO essential! You’ll never even have to worry about what plugs are used where because this little thing has ALL of them. Plus it has two USB slots so you can charge multiple devices at once!

Bags and Luggage

Ricardo Beverly Hills              Harvey’s Seatbelt Bag

Ricardo Carry On: I use this bag most of the time because it’s sturdy and has a zipper that lets me expand it by about 5 inches. So far it has proven to be indestructible, and has traveled to about twenty countries.

Harvey’s Seatbelt Bag: Another item that I’m convinced is indestructable and that I’ve used on every trip I’ve been on is this mini tote bag made from seatbelts. As you can probably imagine, seatbelts are pretty strong, which is why this bag has been through hell and back and doesn’t even have a fray, tear, or stain. It’s slash proof, and roomy enough to fit everything I need including my laptop. It also saved me from getting severely injured when I got hit by a car on a motorcycle!

Genius Pack Carry On                         Gabbiano Luggage

Genius Pack Carry On: For new travelers, or for anyone who sucks at packing, the Genius Packs are, well, genius! They have organizational compartments inside that specify where you should put things; such as socks, undies, chords, and dirty laundry. Mine doubles as a camera gear and electronics carrier.

Gabbiano Luggage: For the stylish travelers, Gabbiano has an awesome collection of funky and stylish quality luggage. You’ll definitely stand out on the conveyer belt! I use my purple Gabbiano for short trips that don’t require me to cram a month’s worth of close into it!

Compression Bags

Compression Bags: This brand of compression bags (AKA vacuum-less space saver bags for travel) has proven to be the easiest to use and the most sturdy. These things are literally the big secret to how I travel for extended periods with only a carry-on. I simply lay all of my clothes flat and then smoosh them down with these compression bags!

  • I'm dying to get a drone! But I'm too nervous to pull the trigger because of the cost and I'm worried I won't get enough use out of it. I'd be so scared bringing it to the beach or places where it might get stolen. I'm actually curious, do you bring all of your camera gear out and about with you all day? It seems like your bag would be so heavy carrying it all around!

  • This is the amazing list as you covered up almost all the things. what to carry and how to carry them without damage. Thanks mate for your amazing list. I am really gonna add up some of them in my list.

  • A Sony Mirrorless camera and a selfie stick are definitely on my list of things to get. You make taking selfies look so easy!

    • Aw thanks Joanna! It's taken a while to get down my system but you got this! Hopefully you'll love the Sony mirrorless cam just as much as I do!

    • I'm not sure if the phone attachment will stretch wide enough for a Plus, but it should give exact dimensions on the listing!

  • Hi!! Love following your adventures!! What backpack do you for everyday use with all your camera equipment?

    • I actually use an oversized purse! I'm going to be inventing/creating my own style soon so stay tuned!

  • I got a 3-way mount turned out to be pretty useless! The Spivo stick is exactly what I need!

    • Haha yeah I'm not a fan of that 3-way mount which is why i usually use the pink selfie stick/tripod! Spivo stick is awesome for videos though!

  • Thanks for the super helpful list, Alyssa. :) I'm so getting the Quick Key and the longer CamKix camera pole/tripod (from your other post).

  • Alyssa,
I'm traveling for four months starting in January and read reviews for the SkyRoam and there are a lot of negative comments about connectivity and very poor customer service. I read your comment and you seem to be quite a fan. I want something I can rely on so was hoping you could let me know a bit more about any issues of it connecting and if you've had to call customer service. I can provide links to some reviews but the majority were negative so it made me nervous to purchase it.
    Thanks,
    Cheryl

    • Hi Cheryl! Unfortunately humans tend to voice their negative opinions rather than positive ones (for example, all of their satisfied customers are probably content so not thinking to go rant publicly about issues). Likewise, what I find a bit funny when people complain about connectivity, is that they are in countries where the overall connectivity is bad..they just don't realize how privileged we are to be used to fast connections! Yes, sometimes it can be slow, especially if you've used up most of your data for the day or are in a remote area, but the Skyroam and now the new Skyroam Solis is how I've been able to work full time while traveling abroad for the past year!

  • I'll be traveling to Italy, Turkey and The Netherlands. Is the Universal Adapter you recommended a good choice or would you recommend a different one plus a converter also?

    • I like this one, that's why I use it! Adapter and converter are the same thing, the only possible thing you'd need additionally is a surge protector but only if you have a mega high powered hair dryer or something. :)
