L.A. Confidential’s Pre-Grammy Party With(out) John Legend

by Alyssa Ramos

Last night, Los Angeles Confidential magazine had their pre-grammy party at The Beverly Hills Hotel in honor of their cover star, John Legend. Except…John Legend didn’t show up because he wanted to protest the prehistoric, bitter, homophobic, asshole who owns the hotel and believes in human torture. Hope I don’t get stoned to death for that.

While John Legend, along with most people including L.A. Confidential’s staff, all of the guests at the party, and myself, are anti-human-hate, I’m pretty sure the ant-gay Sultan of Most-of-the-Money-In-The-World, gives 0 shits what we think or do to protest him.

In my opinion, while it is admirable of John Legend to send such a strong, moving message, it was also kind of a slap in the face to L.A. Confidential who spent an exponential amount of time, and money on the event in his honor…not to mention his many fans who showed up to see him. It was also L.A. Confidential’s first major Industry event.

I agree with Katherine Nicholls, CEO of L.A. Confidential’s parent company Niche Media Holdings, that boycotting all companies and hotels with affiliations in countries that “do not share our beliefs would cause serious financial harm and damage to the Los Angeles community, and the American economy.”

Like seriously, think about how many haters there are…he’d be left with no where to go if he tried to boycott them too. Instead of appreciating hard-working people who praise him, he has highlighted and drawn even more attention to some ugly rich dude who sucks. Lame.

But I digress. On to the party! I had a fantastical time at the pre-grammy event, and thought LA..Confidential nailed it with their pop-chic decor, Cirôq cocktail bar, passed hors d’oeurves, and even a slow-motion video booth! Suits and stilettos filled the hot-pink-lit ballroom, while a DJ spun at the front of the room.

After mingling, sipping, and eating every dessert that came by on a silver tray, we attempted the interesting photobooth, much to the amusement of anyone standing nearby. On the way out, tables were set up in the marble-floored foyer with candy stations for guests to enjoy on their way home.

I’m not really great at recognizing people other than the ones I’ve met but L.A. Confidential had issued a media alert, announcing confirmed celebrity attendees, including Common, Ava DuVernay, Diplo, Bastille, Keke Palmer, Paul Oakenfold, Henry Sanders, Evan Ross, Ernie Hudson, Carmen Electra, Ali Landry, Miller herself and editor-in-chief Spencer Beck.
