Amazing Northern Lights Show in Norway

Me trying to smile in front of the Northern Lights even though I was freezing AF

I was lucky enough to see an amazing Northern Lights show in Norway last February, and my pro light-chasing guides from Chasing Lights captured the whole thing on film! I traveled to Tromsø, which is in the northernmost part of Norway, not to mention an adorable little city that looks like a Christmas card!

Tromsø sits right in the Arctic Circle which makes it pretty much the perfect place for seeing the Northern Lights. But what’s equally as important to location for spotting those Aurora Borealis’, is having experienced guides who know how to track weather, and use real-time Northern Lights cams to chase the light activity!

That’s why I went with a company called Chasing Lights, which is located right in the heart of Trømso, not far from the Scandic Ishavshotel I was staying at on the bay. The company was started, and is ran by young, dedicated, Northern Lights-chasing enthusiasts, who will go to extreme measures to make sure you see those damn lights if it’s the last thing they do!

Oh, and by the way, it’s called a “chase” because you literally go on a wild-goose chase in search of areas where the weather is clear, dark, and cold, AKA the perfect combination for an aurora sighting. It gets EXTREMELY cold, but the Chasing Lights crew equips all guests with a snow suit, snow shoes, and plenty of hot chocolate to attempt keeping you warm.

They will literally stop the bus if they happen to spot some light activity as you drive to the destinations, and will wait as long as everyone is comfortable until you see a good light show. Don’t worry, they provide food halfway through the chase to keep everyone happy, and more importantly…there’s wifi on the bus!!

I must disclose that seeing the Northern Lights is considered very rare since it’s hard to predict when and where they’ll be, but I did happen to catch one of the most amazing Northern Lights shows in Norway of the season, which you can see in the video above.

Words literally cannot describe how incredible it was to see this phenomenon of nature, but the best way I can describe it is; it’s as if you’re watching a symphony of music dancing above your head. I’m not even a poetic person in real life, but that’s really how I felt! I also felt at one point when the lights were literally above my head that I was either going to get abducted by aliens, or beamed into another universe. The green light rays look like crystal columns when they’re directly above you!
