Bull Shark Diving in Playa del Carmen 2024: Planning Guide, Info, and Tips

When I first heard that you can go bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen, so many thoughts ran through my mind. Since diving with bull sharks is at the very top of my bucketlist, the first questions of course were, “How much is it?”, “Are they here right now??”, “Do we have to be in a cage???”

At first I did a quick google search to find some answers. I was pretty surprised to see how many places offer the tours, and that they were even on big booking sites like Viator! But if I was going to go swimming with apex predators, I wanted to make sure it was done right!

A fellow expat who has lived here in Playa del Carmen for 3 years connected me with a girl from France who is a Marine Biologist. Her name is Kim, and she also started a small, all-female diving company here in Playa called Double K Diving! She was so incredibly knowledgeable and reassuring of all of my concerns, telling me I was going to absolutely love it, which I absolutely did!

If you book a dive with them, please mention me because I get a small commission and that’s what helps keep this free blog alive!

So now that I’ve ticked off my major bucketlist of bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen, I can tell you what it’s like, how to plan it, and some tips!

(PS If You’re coming to this area of Mexico, please read my post first about “Is Mexico Safe? Safety Tips for Playa and Tulum”)

Bull Shark Diving in Playa del Carmen in a Nut Shell…

bull shark diving in playa del carmen
This is the position you’ll be in post of the time, and how close the bull sharks get! (I’m in the middle)

Female pregnant bull sharks supposedly started coming to the warm waters of Playa del Carmen several years ago. According to Kim, (who again, is a Marine Biologist), because it’s an area with no potential predators, and years ago some fishermen used to dump fish here so they were attracted in that particular spot.

Then, fishermen stared catching the sharks, and selling them as meat! In fact there was one fisherman who would go out nightly to catch them, and once he caught 12 in one night! To stop him and other locals from shark fishing, dive enthusiasts and companies actually pay them off, and have taught them to turn the sharks into a profitable tourist attraction, instead of a meal.

There is some debate about whether or not the bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen is ethical or not to the sharks. Well, in many of our opinions, allowing people to carefully observe them under water is A LOT better than observing them mounted on a wall or in a bowl of soup! There’s also a big debate about the companies that feed the sharks by hand in order to “put on a show” for divers. The dive I did didn’t do that, but even if it did, again, I’d rather people pay to see them, than locals kill them to get paid for their dead parts.

Now for the actual dive! It’s about 30-35 minutes and about 80-90 feet deep! It’s shorter because you go deeper, and use air faster. The cost for the shark dive plus a reef dive with Double K Diving is $135, and in my opinion 1000% worth it!

It’s a very straight forward process. The dive guides know where the bull sharks are (only about 400 meters from the beach, HA!), and you simply descend down a rope all the way to the bottom, sit down, and watch.

More details below!

Is Bull Shark Diving Dangerous?

is bull shark diving dangerous
I swear they look more dangerous than they are (when they’re pregnant at least)

Potentially. But not really with the ones you’ll be diving with in Playa del Carmen. This is because the ones that come to Playa are pregnant females, who come during their gestation period. There are also no males around so they are more relaxed.

However in other areas bull sharks can definitely be more dangerous. In fact you have probably heard that they are one of the most aggressive types of sharks!

But don’t worry, this dive is carefully executed in a way that is safe for you, and that they are used to! There has never been an incident with a bull shark in Playa del Carmen.

Is The Dive Scary?

bull shark diving mylifesamovie.com
See how happy and not scared I look?

Chances are that if you’re reading this, you aren’t too afraid of sharks. Because if you were there is no way in hell you’d even have ended up here!

For me personally, I was not afraid of being around the sharks at all, and actually found the experience to be very beautiful and peaceful. The only scary part for me, as an “anxious diver” was thinking about the depth since I’d never gone down that deep, and not being able to surface if I felt like it on my own (which you shouldn’t do anyway).

To be honest, I was a little panicky going down at first, but after a minute I could already see the bottom! And the sharks! As soon as I saw the sharks I got really excited and completely forgot about the depth! In fact, I was shocked when it was time to go up, because I was so mesmerized by the sharks swimming around us!

((BTW I had a traumatic dive experience in a cenote 2 years ago that made me afraid to dive again, but I REALLY wanted to see the sharks, so I practiced diving in Cozumel, then went and did it, now I’m not afraid anymore!!))

As Kim said, “I promise, you will love it!”, and that’s the damn truth!

Do You Need a Special Scuba Diving Certification?

shark dive
It’s a deep dive so you should have Advanced Open Water, or over 15 dives with Open Water

Technically you should have your Advanced Open Water because of the depth. Regular Open Water is supposed to only be to 18 meters or 60 feet, and this is an 80-90 feet dive.

However, if you’ve done more than 15 or so dives, most of the companies will let you do it with an Open Water license, and will just brief you beforehand for a deep dive.

If you aren’t certified yet for Open Water, Kim does that as well in Playa for $400! You can do it with her and then also do the Shark Dive later after you’ve gotten a few more dives under your belt.

When Are the Bull Sharks in Playa del Carmen?

bull shark season november through march

The official season for Bull Sharks in Playa del Carmen is between November and March. However this can vary! For example, something unknown happened last year where they came for only two weeks, and then left for the rest of the season. It’s likely someone fished one of them, and scared the rest away.

Why Do the Bull Sharks Come to Playa Del Carmen?

tagged bull shark
This bull shark is tagged so they can track if and when it comes back to Playa

As I mentioned in the nut shell, it is said that originally they came to eat the bi-products of fish that the locals caught and threw into the sea. Now some of the shark dive companies feed them (by hand), so it is also said that they come back for the easy food and relatively safe waters during their gestation period.

After their 10 month gestation (pregnancy), they swim to Sian Ka’an Bio Reserve area to have their babies in the mangroves. Then it’s back up towards Florida! …Where they can be a bit more aggressive.

How Many Sharks Can You Expect to See

bull shark diving playa del carmen
On the sea floor it seems like there are only 3-4, but from above I saw about 9!

You can’t predict this at all. Before I went, some people said 4-5 and I thought that was a lot!

But then I went, and there was about 9 of them! We could see at least one at all times, and half the time there were two or three crossing paths! I actually couldn’t tell there were nine until we were starting to swim up, and I saw them all from above!

Do They Feed the Bull Sharks?

bull shark
The bull sharks still come even if you don’t feed them

There’s two types of bull shark dives; observatory and feeding. You can probably guess what happens in each. I did the observatory dive, so there was no feeding.

Apparently the point of feeding dives is to see more action and supposedly for the sharks to get closer. But when I did it without a feeding, they still got as close as two feet from my face!

Again this is a constant debate of whether it’s good or not to do. On the one hand, it’s better to have tourism than shark fishing. Plus, I meeeannn, easy free food for the preggo sharkies. On the other hand, it’s bad to get them used to being fed in case they stop wanting to hunt in the wild.

How Much is it to go Bull Shark Diving?

bull shark
Worth paying $135 to see!

Each bull shark diving company in Playa del Carmen has a different cost. I’d highly recommend that you don’t make your decision based solely on the cheapest price! Do your research on different companies and who people recommend!

As you already know, I highly recommend Kim, not just because everything was SO well executed, but because she’s highly knowledgeable about the sharks as well! And super sweet!

Again the shark dive plus another reef dive (without the sharks) is only $135! Please mention that I referred you so that she knows I’m spreading the good word!

What do You Do During the Dive Process?

bull shark dive
Once you get down to the rope, you relax and watch the sharks swim around you!

Here’s a basic timeline of how my bull shark dive went:

  • 1 hour of briefing and gear fitting
  • 5 minute boat ride from the Reef Club (!!!), yes, they are THAT close to the beach!
  • 5 minutes gearing up and jumping into the water
  • 2-3 minutes descending down to the bottom of the water using a rope attached to a bouy
  • 20-25 minutes situating everyone kneeling or laying down holding onto a rope at the bottom, observing the sharks as they swim around you!
  • 6-7 minutes swimming away from the sharks (yes, past them!) and ascending, including safety stops

The entire dive only lasted about 35 minutes, because as I mentioned earlier, you use more oxygen at deeper depths!

What Gear Should You Use to Take Photos and Videos?

Of course you’ll want photos and videos of your shark experience right?! Well, many of us will, but some may want to just enjoy the experience!

Many of the dive companies offer an actual photographer for an added fee, but it can be super pricey. Usually around $50, which is definitely worth it if you don’t want to take your own!

If you want to try taking your own though, these are the products I’d suggest you bring:

Note: The first row is DJI products which are cheaper, and same quality, and the second row is GoPro. You MUST have a waterproof case for either of them at this depth. The point of the red filter is so everything doesn’t look so blue! You can also edit with the Dive+ app later.

PHOTO TIP: If you don’t want to attempt taking your own photos, Double K Diving will take your photos for an additional only $35 ! Or $50 for groups. Definitely worth it! They took most of the photos you see in this post!

Safety Tips for Diving with Bull Sharks

bull shark
Don’t do this. Keep your arms and cameras close to your body. (I was overly excited)

Kim and also my cousin Ani (who certified me years ago) gave me a bunch of safety tips for swimming with bull sharks! Some may seem obvious, but just in case they’re not:

  • Don’t flail around, especially at the surface. That’s what sharks look for naturally when looking for prey!
  • Try not to kick up the sand on the ocean floor. It creates cloudiness which is terrible for visibility…both for your camera, and the sharks.
  • Don’t hold your camera out. Keep it close to your body. So you don’t lose a limb or something.
  • Always stay with your group! It makes it seem like you are one giant animal rather than one tiny one that’s easy to target!
  • Hold on to the rope at all times! You do NOT want to drift off by yourself!

If you enjoyed this post or found it useful, please share it on social media and leave a comment! That’s how I’m able to continue providing free posts! (BTW it takes several days to write and edit them!)

  • I bought a new phone in China bc you get a decent tax refund, but soon after, it started talking to me in Chinese, and then people started calling it and sending text messages!

I honestly felt like I was in a movie, where you find a phone and then suddenly you’re forced to carry out some crazy mission or something!

Turns out, for some reason, the girl who sold me the phone put her own SIM card in it to activate it (no idea why), and it was all her friends calling her. 😂

Anyway, FYI you’re NOT supposed to open any tax refund products from their boxes before you leave the country! And you have to get the papers signed/approved BEFORE and after customs! Makes a few hundred dolla difference!

  • True story: I did not speak any Italian (besides ciao, grazie, and vino) and my husband didn’t speak any English when we first met!!

We used translation apps and some Spanish (he understands because Sardinian sounds similar) but when I first moved here, to a small traditional town where not many people speak English, it was very, very evident that I needed to learn Italian.

Knowing Spanish didn’t help me. The conjugations are completely different and so are most words (dislike when ppl assume I learned bc of that).

And full immersion didn’t force me to learn either, bc my ADHD would just tune out. Apps also easily bored me.

So I looked up online tutors and found Preply, which has thousands of real humans to teach you face to face online, and they can customize your lessons to your learning style and needs.

I’ve been doing Italian lessons twice a week for almost 3 years now, and the online tutors are the main reason why I can speak conversational Italian now!

So if you dream of meeting your partner randomly in another country, or planning to move abroad, and you want to learn the language (or just want to learn one for fun), check out my blog post and please use my link on there for a discount and affil for me! Mylifesamovie.com !

My current tutor Lara is amazing, she does my Italian lessons also in English and Spanish so I don’t forget my native tongue! Also doubles as an unofficial therapist 😂😂

Last, let this bring some hope and inspo to my fellow solo female travelers! If you haven’t found your partner yet, he may be waiting for you in another country!!

  • A pod of 15 Orcas surrounded our small boat in La Ventana, Mexico… my reaction was squealing like a child and I even cried a few tears (don’t tell anyone).

Then, after careful behavioral assessment by our marine biologist guide, we were given permission to swim with them for about 2 minutes!

I cried even more after that, it was one of the most magical moments of my life!

This was an ethical Sea Safari trip with an experienced, animals-first, women-run company. Orca tours do not exist since you cannot predict when they will show up.

There are also many rules and regulations to keep this safe and ethical, so please check out my other posts about it, and for info on how to book this trip, search “orcas” on my blog - mylifesamovie.com!

  • Everyone raves about the viral Storm Spa in Chongqing China being so cool but meanwhile I was on the verge of a panic attack in there feeling like I fell overboard during the Drake Passage 😳

I am still unsure why an extreme storm was chosen for a spa…but I can at least say the beginning where it’s sunny, and the end where there’s randomly northern lights, was nice!

The ROOMS of the hotel where this spa is at are incredible though! They’re the also-viral ones where there’s a huge clear pool in the rooms!

But fun fact.. it’s not a full sized hotel…they only own a few floors of a skyscraper, which is genius bc they can spend less on maxxing out the rooms and still get booked out!

Oh and the Storm Spa session (30 mins) is included with the room! And the sister hotel includes a photoshoot 🤩

Should I post room tours of them?

All of the information for these viral Chongqing hotels and also Chongqing cyberpunk city in general are on my blog, including the CORRECT links to each hotel (online it’s very confusing bc they all have the same name!)

Also I need to know who would love this and who would hate it, am I the only one?? 😂

You can take samurai lessons with a real life samurai (and famous youtuber) and then practice on the cardboard “enemy”, and later go steam it out at the onsen!

  • Don’t go to Japan and ONLY visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, when there are beautiful hidden gems like Fukushima, just an hour train ride away!

I’ve been to Japan six times now, and have visited six prefectures as well, and I can honestly say that Fukushima was so impressive, that we extended our stay!

I know some people hear “Fukushima” and associate it with the tragedy that happened there in the past, but that was 15 years ago, and today Fukushima is not only safe, but thriving with nature, culture, and traditional, unique experiences!

Some of my favorite things to do there were:

- Take a Samurai class (GREAT for stress relief)
- Stay at a Ryokan and go to the many onsens
- Make your own sushi and eat a lot of it!
- Visit the Fukushima Museum of Art to see famous pieces and traditional ones
- Stroll around Ouchi Juku old town and eat the soba noodles with a giant green onion
- Go for a hike in the mountain National Parks or boat ride on the lakes

This is also where we did that fun little self-made “free foot spa crawl”, and I’d honestly go back just to do that and stay in that area again! (Actually we might, anyone want to join?)

All of the information to plan your trip to Fukushima is on my blog, and also more BTS videos are on the highlight on my profile!

Which of these sounds most magical to you?

  • Only 0.01% of humans have passed 80 degrees North latitude and guess who’s one of them? THIS GIRL! (And 26 of my Travel Tribe friends) 💪🏽

Sailing through the Arctic Pack Ice is a huge achievement because that means you’re close to the North Pole (90 degrees North), which you can only reach via the Pack Ice (so if it’s melted…you can’t reach it)

In the past this area was only traveled by famous explorers, meanwhalers/trappers/hunters, researchers, photographers, and wealthy adventurers, and also mostly men (shocker, I know).

Then there’s us, reaching 81 degrees North, mostly because we want to see Polar Bears and other wildlife, and tick the Arctic Circle off of our bucketlist!

I’m pretty proud to be an unconventional female adventurer, and to be able to “influence” others to do the same!

I may not look the stereotypical part of an explorer; but let me tell you how much warmer that girl in the hot pink swimsuit was in the jacuzzi looking for polar bears than everyone else was!! (Well, at least having extra amounts of fun 😂)

I’m so grateful to have been to Svalbard twice now, it’s truly a peculiar and interesting place!

  • Happy World Ocean Day! Here’s some ocean insights from someone who has swam in all 5 oceans (can anyone name them?), has crossed the Drake Passage 8 times and recently voyaged through Arctic pack ice, who has scuba dove in over 30 countries, learned to free dive only because they’re trying to keep up with animals, and has developed a severe obsession with swimming with marine apex predators, and all the creatures!

First and foremost — the Ocean is more powerful than humans are. Don’t mess with it or it will mess with you.

One of the many things I learned during the lectures in Antarctica is that krill (tiny little animals that 🐋’s eat) is in danger of being over-fished, so avoid products that use it.

Try to only eat locally caught fish, avoid big companies that use ghost nets — the number one killer of marine animals aside from actual hunting, and yes, people still do that too in places like Japan, Iceland, Faroe Islands, and USA.

Speaking of the U.S… the place I’m from, FLORIDA, is one of the top killers of my beloved SHARKS, and right now the gov is trying to stop Shark tourism there, such as diving with sharks (my favorite hobby), something that really does protect these extremely necessary animals as opposed to all the people there that kill them for business or for FUN 😡

Some will say that this and other swimming with marine animal excursions are “unethical” but guess what happens if there’s no tourism demand? They kill them to sell. I’ve seen it over the years and I’m highly experienced with ethical and non-ethical tourism!

So for this World Ocean Day, I am asking you to please share this post, and sign the petition on my Stories against the stopping of shark diving in Florida!

And if you sign it and want to come with me next time I visit for the holidays, I’ll give you first dibs and a discount and also a glass of my vino!!!

Thank you for reading this if you got this far! I know I write too much!

I miss those days and I’m so grateful I started all of this when a single photo post was all you did…a thousand words in one photo.

How do I even explain what each of these photos held? I can write it on my blog but 🤖 will just summarize me in the search results. I can spend hours making a reel, only for the system to analyze it’s not interesting enough ugh because not enough people watched past 6 seconds (yes that is the current algorithm)

So I guess I’ll just keep my memories in my mind and share the tips and pretty photos!

And keep trying to add in those BTS moments, like the last one, which is what we were actually doing most of the time 😂

Definitely a major highlight of this #fukushima trip was the Samurai class and the onsen town, I’d go back there for both! All of I was very stress relieving!

Anyone missing the one photo post days? Or wishing they could take a Samurai class right now? 😬

Don’t go to Japan and ONLY visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, when there are beautiful hidden gems like Fukushima, just an hour train ride away! Some of my favorite things to do there were: - Take a Samurai class (GREAT for stress relief) - Stay at a Ryokan and go to the many onsens - Make your own sushi and eat a lot of it! - Visit the Fukushima Museum of Art to see famous pieces and traditional ones - Stroll around Ouchi Juku old town and eat the soba noodles with a giant green onion - Go for a hike in the mountain National Parks or boat ride on the lakes This is also where we did that fun little self-made “free foot spa crawl”, and I’d honestly go back just to do that and stay in that area again! (Actually we might, anyone want to join?) All of the information to plan your trip to Fukushima is on my blog, and also more BTS videos are on the highlight on my profile! Which of these sounds most magical to you? #Fukushima #FukushimaTravel #JapanTravelTips #japan #solotravel

Only 0.01% of humans have passed 80 degrees North latitude and guess who’s one of them? THIS GIRL! (And 26 of my Travel Tribe friends) 💪🏽 Sailing through the Arctic Pack Ice is a huge achievement because that means you’re close to the North Pole (90 degrees North), which you can only reach via the Pack Ice (so if it’s melted…you can’t reach it) In the past this area was only traveled by famous explorers, meanwhalers/trappers/hunters, researchers, photographers, and wealthy adventurers, and also mostly men (shocker, I know). (Well, at least having extra amounts of fun 😂) I’m so grateful to have been to Svalbard twice now, it’s truly a peculiar and interesting place! If it’s on your to-go list, drop me a comment and I’ll send you the info for this trip plus five-hundo-off 😁 Drone footy by the Polar Latitudes Photographers who have a permit to fly there (guests cannot): @vegarabelsnes @stevenrosephotography #svalbard #packice #thearctic #arcticexpedition #womenwhoexplore

Happy World Ocean Day! Speaking of the U.S… the place I’m from, FLORIDA, is one of the top killers of my beloved SHARKS, and right now the gov is trying to stop Shark tourism there, such as diving with sharks (my favorite hobby), something that really does protect these extremely necessary animals as opposed to all the people there that kill them for business or for FUN 😡 Some will say that this and other swimming with marine animal excursions are “unethical” but guess what happens if there’s no tourism demand? They kill them to sell. I’ve seen it over the years and I’m highly experienced with ethical and non-ethical tourism! So for this World Ocean Day, I am asking you to please share this post, and sign the petition on my Stories against the stopping of shark diving in Florida! And if you sign it and want to come with me next time I visit for the holidays, I’ll give you first dibs and a discount and also a glass of my vino!!! Thank you for reading this if you got this far! I know I write too much! 🐳🐋🦭🐟🐠🦈🦈🦈🦈
