Introducing the NEW Skyroam SOLIS 4G Global Wifi Hotspot!

As a full time traveler, and a full time travel blogger, I’m constantly in need of Wifi when I travel, and I’m happy to report that I’ve finally found an awesome solution with the Skyroam global wifi hotspot device! I’ve used the original Skyroam in India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina, Iceland, Vietnam and Indonesia, and can honestly say that I freaking LOVE IT.

No more scrounging around trying to pick up free airport or cafe wifi, or feeling helpless when you aren’t connected walking around. I’ve felt a lot more comfortable and less stressed than I usually am when I travel, all because I’m constantly connected to wifi when I need to be!

Now, Skyroam has rolled out with the next evolution of their amazing hotspot, the Skyroam Solis!

Not only does the Skyroam Solis give you a speedy 4G LTE mobile connectivity without a SIM, but it also has a built in power bank, with a long-lasting Tesla-type battery that stays powered for 16+ hours! I like to refer to it as my “mobile office”…all that’s missing is my laptop!

Speaking of my laptop, the new Skyroam Solis can share Wifi with up to 5 devices at once, which is perfect for when I’m doing one of my Group Trips, and my travelers need to stay connected! Just like the original Skyroam, there’s no service contract commitments, so you only pay for what you use, which you purchase in the form of day passes!

How Does Skyroam Work?

You might be thinking, “Why not just get a local SIM card” or “Why not just use free Wifi”, but trust me, I’ve traveled to about twenty countries using free wifi alone when I can find it, and using a Skyroam wifi hotspot device now makes a hell of a difference. PLUS! It picks up which country your in and turns on the service for that place on its own!

Here’s more information on this awesome little device!

Where does the wifi and data come from?

The easiest answer for this question is: You turn the Skyroam device on, you connect to its network on your phone or laptop using the network key and password that it comes with, and voila! You have unlimited data and wifi wherever you are for up to 5 devices.

For those of you that want the more technical answer: the Skyroam wifi hotspot uses a sweet new technology called a Virtual SIM which can connect to dozens of other cellular networks in 90+ countries, and picks them up automatically when you travel. After the Skyroam device picks up on the best network to connect to, it sends a message back to the servers, which then remotely delivers new SIM information to the Virtual SIM so that the Skyroam can connect to local cellular networks.

In a nutshell, it’s a universal SIM card that doesn’t require an unlocked phone, subscription, or hassle.

That being said, as long as there is local cell service in one of the 100+ countries that it’s currently available, you’ll be good to go with Skyroam wifi and unlimited data!

How much data do you get?

Skyroam functions on 24 Hour Day Passes that include unlimited global data and wifi for one flat fee. That means you don’t have to worry about running out of data, or going over your international data plan and having to pay insane fees. The way it works is by starting out with 4G data, and if you start to use a lot of it, it goes down to 3G, then 2.5G, but even at the lowest connection, it still works for messaging and browsing.

So far the data and wifi has been extremely good while I’ve been using my Skyroam wifi hotspot in India, even in remote places and on buses and trains. I’ve been using it to connect my iPhone, laptop, plus a friend’s phone and laptop too, which we’ve been using a lot to Snapchat, Instagram, or even do Facebook live or Periscopeand there’s still room for four additional devices!

How Much Does Skyroam Cost?

So now you’re probably wondering how much a Skyroam wifi hotspot costs, and how you even get one in the first place. There’s two options; renting or buying one, and either way, you can get it shipped to you or you can pick it up at a dealership nearby.

Renting a Skyroam

For shorter trips that are from one weekend to a couple weeks, I’d suggest renting a Skyroam hotspot, especially if you don’t travel that often. I say this because when you rent it, you’re going to be charged a daily fee regardless of if you need wifi that day or not since you’re still renting the Skyroam device, so longer trips, or multiple international trips could end up getting expensive.

It costs $9.95 per day to rent it, and again that includes up to 5 devices. Considering the quality and convenience of having your own data and wifi hotspot when you travel, I’d definitely say it’s worth it to rent for a shorter trip.

Buying a Skyroam

If you travel frequently, or are going on an extended trip, you can also buy your own Skyroam wifi hotspot device for about $100, which comes with 3 free day passes, plus a lowered daily rate for any additional ones!

I like this option better because it allows me to choose when I want to use one of my 24 hour day passes, so if I want to save them for days that I want/need to get a lot of work done, and use free wifi hotspots on days I don’t, it’s always an option.

My Opinion About Skyroam

So far I’ve been really impressed with the shiny new gadget, and how easy it was to activate the 24-hour day pass, find the log-in information, and connect it to my iPhone and MacBook Air. The Wifi runs perfectly, and automatically connects to my devices, so I still get notifications and whatnot like I would with normal cell service.

The battery also lasts me a full day of chronic computer work and messaging, and I just charged it at night with the little USB chord that comes in its protective carrying case, or I use a portable battery charger if I really need to.

I’m definitely not making any of this up either, you can even check out my Snapchat (@mylifesamovie.c) to see it in action right now, or take a peak at the Skyroam website for more info!

Where Skyroam Works

In addition to the countries below, Skyroam also now works in many popular Caribbean islands such as Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago, and Turks & Caicos.

Here are the other countries where the Skyroam wifi hotspot works. Keep in mind that just like at home, there are certain places where cell phone service just sucks, and there’s nothing you can do about it. The Skyroam hotspot will automatically connect to the most powerful local service provider, so if the signal is weak, it’s because of the local service, not the Skyroam!
