Easy Affordable Fiji Islands Travel Tips

The words “easy” and “affordable” usually don’t go in the same sentence as “Fiji islands”, but after my recent solo travels there, I have some solid travel tips to make that a reality!

easy affordable fiji islands travel tips mylifesatravelmovie
One of my favorite day trips was to Malamala Beach Club in the Mamana Islands of Fiji!

Full honesty: I normally can get collaborations in most countries, but Fiji was not one of them! So I paid for everything out of pocket, and I’m very frugal yet also a bit bougie, therefore I did everything on an “adventure luxury” budget!

That being said, if you appreciate all of these free travel tips, PLEASE use my affiliate links in this post to book your trip so I at least make a little bit of my moolah back! It costs nothing for you but at least gives a little back to me! Thank you!

PS! Don’t forget there’s a lot more travel tips, videos, photos, and behind-the-scenes on my social media accounts! It’s @MyLifesATravelMovie on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter!

Ok now on to the good stuff!

Where is Fiji?

where is fiji, map of fiji

Fiji is located in the South Pacific Islands, just east of Australia and close to other small country islands like Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa, and Tonga. It is made up of 332 islands! So that being said, make sure you try to see a few of them!

That being said:

My Biggest Tip is to Immediately Get Out of Nadi/The Main Island!

There’s not much to do in Nadi besides the airport. Sure, there’s a beach area, but it’s nothing compared to the beaches of the nearby islands! There’s also some day trips in Nadi, but again, nothing compared to Yasawa or Mamanca Islands!

Denarau is considered an island, but it’s pretty much still part of the main island. It’s about a ten minute drive from Nadi, and it’s where all the fancy expensive resorts are.

If you do have time to kill in Nadi: I would recommend doing a Waterfall Tour, or perhaps one of the day trips to the floating beach clubs!

How to Get to Fiji

Another tip I have for flexible travelers is to combine your Fiji trip with other travels in the South Pacific Islands or Australia. I was already traveling in Papua New Guinea, and it was extremely easy and cheap for me to find one way flights from PNG to Solomons, then to Vanuatu, then to Fiji!

The more expensive part was getting back to USA, but I found a pretty decent one way flight for around $800 to Los Angeles direct on Fiji Airways, and then I got a $150 flight from LA to Miami!

I always use this website to play around with the dates using flexible dates option, in order to find the cheapest flights!

The airport to fly into/out of is Nadi International Airport.

Airport Transport and Arrival Tips in Nadi

included transfer with fiji islands tous
#image_title

Taxis in Fiji are pretty expensive, especially from the airport, but most hotels do not offer free airport transfers, so you have to pay for one or arrange through your hotel.

A taxi from the airport to my hotel which was only about 7 minutes away was $20 (eye roll).

But I found a cheaper options if you book online: $7 Private Transfer with Supermarket Stop!

Use the above option if you need to stay at a hotel for the night you arrive/depart, otherwise if you book a tour, you get a transfer included!

Here’s some other Fiji Travel Tips for when you arrive in Nadi:

  • Get money out at an ATM (click here to see which debit and credit cards I recommend for travel)
  • Get a physical SIM card as eSIMs don’t work well on the islands (click here for how to use SIMs)
  • If you aren’t returning to the same hotel, store your big luggage at the airport, it’s just after immigration

How to Get to Port Denarau

If you’re staying in Nadi or anywhere else, and you need to get to Port Denarau for the ferry or tours, you have a few options.

Well if you’re doing a tour like the ones below, your transfer is included, which is mostly ideal! The only non-ideal part as I mentioned above, is there are set pick up and departure times. Plus you have to wait while the bus stops at all the hotels.

I did the tour transfer to get to Port Denarau and it wasn’t too bad, only about a 30 minute ride.

However on the way back, I was worried about getting to the airport on time, so I paid around $25 for a taxi, which I negotiated, and I thought it was a good deal. Especially since they charged me $20 to get from the airport to my Nadi hotel…

Where to Stay in Nadi and Denarau

Unless you arrive super early in Nadi to catch the 9am tour transfer pickup, you’ll likely need to stay in Nadi or Denarau the first night. Same thing applies if you don’t have a late flight on your departure day, because all tour transfers back depart at 6pm and take 1-2 hours to get you to your hotel.

Nadi is a lot more affordable, but still expensive. You have some options by the beach, but my goal was to stay near the airport to make it easier to do the island hopping trip.

Although it’s nothing fancy, I really appreciated the Mercure near the airport! Please use this link when you’re ready to book it! I mostly liked that they let me store my luggage there for the 3 nights I was away, and again the proximity to the airport.

If you want to splurge for a fancy hotel in Denarau, check out some of the deals below!

The Best Outer Fiji Islands to Aim for

When I say the “best outer Fiji islands”, I’m talking about the closest ones to get to from Nadi/Denarau. There’s still hundreds of other islands, but they require flights or very long ferries!

The islands you want to aim for that are close by, are the Yasawa Islands and Mamanca Islands. That’s where you’ll find the crystal clear water surrounding drops of islands, with really beautiful coral and sea life!

Below you’ll find the tours that will take you to those islands!

The Best Multi Day Fiji Islands Hopping Tours!

As I mentioned, my top tip for Fiji is to GET OUT OF NADI ASAP! There are so many beautiful islands, try to see as man as possible!

TRAVEL TIP: there are three types of islands; ones with lush greenery and accommodations, ones that are basically just sand islands, and ones that are man-made floating barges! I’ll get to them all!

Important Things to Note About These Tours:

  • Accommodation is included and there are two options, dorm or private bula (beachside bungalow), I did the bulas and LOVED them!
  • Despite how many people do them, they are actually extremely organized, and it never feels super crowded because they have a max capacity per island
  • They charge $300-1000 extra for solo travelers, boo.
  • There’s also an additional $50/day for mandatory meal plans at each place (breakfast, lunch, dinner) which you pay at the property
  • All ferry transfers and ground transfer from the port to your hotel or airport in Nadi are included
  • Mine also included a free day pass to an additional beach club island which made the tour price more worth it!
  • The islands and accommodations vary, if you want specific ones book far in advance, otherwise they’ll pick for you based on availability! I did the latter literally a day in advance and they made it happen, and I was super impressed!
  • You also get a pretty nice welcome gift! I got a hydroflask waterbottle, a dry bag (very uselful), and sarong!
  • Pack LIGHT! Do not bring a huge suitcase on any of these! Store it at your hotel or at the airport!

Alright here’s my top recommendations:

Fiji Islands 4 Day/3 Night (2-3 islands):

south sea island fiji islands mylifesamovie.com
A drone shot of South Sea Island, which is mostly one big beach and snorkel area

Costs Starting at:

  • $742 per person double occupancy in a private bula
  • $1063 single occupancy in a private bula
  • $503 per person in a dorm with shared bathroom

This is the tour I did and I really liked it! I stayed at a beautiful bula on South Sea Island, but there’s not much to do there, which is great if you want to relax. They also have unlimited drinks only on this island! Then I spent the other two nights on Manta Ray island, and paid extra to add on the shark dive on Kuata Island so I got to spend a day there. Then I did the free pass to Malamala Beach club on the last day which was AMAZING!

Fiji Islands 3 Day / 2 Night (2 islands)

manta ray island resort fiji islands mylifesamovie.com
The beach in front of my Bula felt very private and uncrowded, and had amazing snorkeling!

Costs Starting at:

  • $586 per person double occupancy in a private bula
  • $587 for single occupancy in a bula (double check to make sure, but this is what’s currently showing!)
  • $279 per person in dorms with shared bath

This shorter tour also takes you to South Sea Island, and then also to Kuata Island where it includes snorkeling with reef sharks. I’d highly recommend upgrading to do the bull shark dive though, it was absolutely amazing! And you don’t need to be certified to do it, but it’s cheaper if you are!

Fiji Islands 8 Day / 7 Night (5 Islands)

manta ray island fiji mylifesamovie.com
Manta Ray Island

Costs Starting at:

  • $1599 per person based on double occupancy in private bula
  • $2572 single occupancy in private bula (rude)
  • $847 for a dorm bed with shared bathroom

Fiji Islands Ferry Pass Without Accommodation Included

If you’d like to plan your own accommodations, which is recommended if you want to spend more time on certain islands, or stay longer than 8 days, you can just get a hop on hop off ferry pass. It only includes the ferry and transfers to/from Denarau port.

Costs Are:

  • 5 Day Pass: $252
  • 13 or 14 day pass: $438
  • 15 day pass: $459

Fiji Islands Day Trips

If you’re short on time, or read this post too late and already booked your hotel in Nadi or Denarau the whole time, you can still do some day trips to the islands!

It’s much more expensive than doing the multi day trips, but in my opinion it’s still worth it!

Here’s some Fiji Islands Day Trips I’d recommend:

Malamala Beach Club Island

Malamala beach club fiji mylifesamovie.com
Malamala Beach Club was a bonus inclusion to the 4 day / 3 night island hopper I did and I absolutely LOVED it!

Malamala Beach Club Island : Cost: $75 (half day) I REALLY loved this beach club on its own private island! It was just so fabulous, fun, and relaxing! There were amazing snorkeling areas, free paddleboards and canoes, and the food/drink pricing wasn’t that bad! A beach chair and towel is included, and there’s pretty good wifi! The main infinity pool is stunning, but get there fast for photos, as it quickly gets taken over by children. To avoid them, walk farther past the main pool to a small adults only pool area!

Kuata Island Shark Snorkel and Bull Shark Diving

bull shark diving kuata island fiji
The most “action” I got on my solo honeymoon in Fiji was diving with bull sharks!

Kuata Island Shark Snorkel : Cost: $176 (Additional $200+ for the shark DIVE) If you’d like an adrenaline rush, do this day trip to Kuata Island where you can snorkel with reef sharks! Again, I recommend upgrading to do the dive with bull sharks! You don’t need to be certified, but book far in advance!

South Sea Island All Inclusive Day Pass

South Sea Island fiji
South Sea Island is great if you’re mostly interested in drinking and chilling at the beach all day

South Sea Island : (Cost $115) This is a less fancy version of Malamala, it’s also a lot smaller, no infinity pools, BUT, the food AND alcohol are included. That’s basically the main perk. I still preferred Malamala!

Cloud 9 Floating Bar and Restaurant

A floating restaurant/bar didn’t seem as appealing as an island, but it gets good reviews!

Cloud 9 Floating Barge Club : This is a pretty popular place according to reviews! I didn’t have time to go to it, but it’s a two-story floating day club type thing, with wood-fired pizzas! It’s surrounded by beautiful waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and $26 of the fee can be used for food and drink. Cost: $109

Please don’t forget! I work extremely hard to produce these free travel guides and posts! If it helped you, or you enjoyed it, PLEASE give it a share on social media, and follow me to keep up with more posts! You’re two minutes of effort truly helps keep my business running! Thank ya!

  • Orca swimming in La Ventana, Mexico has been SUSPENDED indefinitely, but there’s more to it than you might think, so keep reading, or comment “orcas” and I’ll send you the full information about the update, future prospects, and these Sea Safari tours in general.

I know some people will automatically blame influencers for posting about swimming with orcas here (we’re used to it), but please keep in mind that many of us were posting the rules and regulations and urging people to be responsible and also that there was never an official “orca tour”, it’s always been a general Sea Safari, and seeing an orca is never guaranteed or promised.

Anyway, before the 1 year trial, there was allegedly complete chaos, with over 35 boats chasing pods and no regulations about how many boats can be near them at a time or how many swimmers and how long they could be in the water.

The trial period enforced those rules, limiting the number of boats and swimmers and how long each boat can be near the orcas. Many people listened, many did not. So that is now what the authorities are evaluating, to determine if they will continue to allow it or permanently ban it.

All of my posts had clear disclaimers about the rules and how to be a responsible traveler here, and I purposely required that people personally email me for info about the tour to make sure they understood the rules, including that there is no “orca tour” but most people still specifically asked for that.

In my opinion, after doing this experience, I don’t really think just anyone should be able to do it or run the tours…so many people just don’t listen or respect rules, and it is dangerous for the animals and themselves.

If they do allow it in the future I think it should be mandatory that a certified marine biologist is onboard most boats, that boats and captains have specific training and certifications, and that tourists have to pay an addition environmental fee so the gov can hire more people to monitor and enforce regulations. Also a smaller amount of spots allowed per day.

I don’t think observing orcas should be completely banned, otherwise people will just continue to go see them
  • Ferragosto is one of the biggest holidays in Italy, every year on August 15th! So definitely don’t come here that day unless you want to experience local celebrations in the form of beach or boat days, and massive feasts with lots of wine!

Many people celebrate with family at home or at restaurants, so make reservations in advance, and wear your feast-fit 😮‍💨😬

Same applies for boat trip reservations and the beaches that require permits in advance!

This is my 3rd summer living in Sardinia and I put all the tips on my Sardinia Travel Guide on my website! Just comment “Sardinia” and I’ll send it to you!

((Transparency — I actually don’t recommend coming here in August at all because it’s the most hot and crowded month, but if that’s your vibe, you’ll love Ferragosto!))

I’ve been to Antarctica 4 times and this was a rare occasion when a penguin suddenly waddle-ran right up to me! It took a lot of willpower not to try and bend down to get closer, but I knew to just stay still and let it observe until it walked away!

Other animals you can see in Antarctica are humpbacks, leopard seals, and Orcas!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

Before the term “influencer” or “content creator” existed, I was one of the original travel bloggers, unknowingly helping pioneer what is now a multibillion dollar Creator Industry. I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand. I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so… Allow me to re-introduce myself. I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media! I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work. Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!) I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going. Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world. So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year. Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips. Thank you everyone who has been here with me for so long, and welcome to anyone new! To follow along with my updates, please comment “travel

I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. ———————- For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the most traveled and most experienced solo female travelers in the world! I’ve been to 146 countries so far over 12 years, and love rare destinations and animals! My goal is to inspire you to travel off the typical path and to shatter negative stereotypes about “dangerous” destinations. Follow me for expert tips and inspiration!
