Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling

Picture this: you work hard to save up a whole bunch of money to go traveling for a while. You embark on your travels, wallet full of money and luggage in hand, excited for the adventures that lie ahead.

But, a few weeks in to your trip you realize there’s a problem. You are burning through your money like there’s no tomorrow! You start wondering what you should do, because you have to fund the rest of your travels somehow.

I’m going to have to cut my travels short, you say to yourself. But, before you pack your bags and head back home, why not check out some of these excellent money saving tips for traveling.

These tips will ensure you get the best bang for your buck, helping you to have a better (and longer) holiday.

Keep scrolling for more!

1. Be Flexible

Be flexible to get more bang for your buck.

Did you know that traveling during certain times of the week, month or year are more expensive than others? Did you also know that some destinations will be more expensive than others depending on the time of year it is too?

Being flexible on the days and dates you travel, as well as where you travel to, could save you a whole lot of money while traveling.

To figure out where you should go, and when, all you need to do is play Alyssa’s favorite game: Flight Roulette. Basically you use Skyscanner’s flexible option. Select ‘everywhere’ as your destination and ‘entire month’ as your date. Then, pick the destination and dates that will save you the most money!

2. Avoid Peak Season

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - avoid peak season

Yep, prices skyrocket alongside the number of tourists during peak season!

Consistent with being flexible on your dates, avoiding peak season will save you so much money while traveling.

Not only will flights be cheaper, but you’ll also find that things like accomodation and even activities will have less of an impact on your wallet.

You’ll also save a lot of time, because there’ll be way less queues for you to stand in for minutes (or hours) on end.

3. Sign Up To Frequent Flyer Programs

Join a frequent flyer program to stretch your dollars.

Why? Because you’ll accumulate points that you can put towards flights or upgrades!

Plus you’ll likely find out about deals your airline is promoting before anyone else.

Pro tip: you could sign up to multiple frequent flyer programs. While you might accrue points more slowly, you’ll have greater access to deals on offer across multiple airlines.

4. Use Your Airpoints

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - use your airports

Yes, accumulating airpoints and having insider access to airline deals is great, but you should actually make the most of these things!

Using points to purchase flights will mean you can put your money towards other things on your travels – winning!

There are several credit cards that allow you to rack up points through purchases — Alyssa swears by Chase Sapphire Reserve, which also includes Global Entry, and most importantly…a free Priority Pass for airport lounge access!

5. Sort Out Your Airport Arrangements Ahead Of Time

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - sort out your airport arrangements ahead of time

This is particularly relevant if you’re driving to and parking at the airport while you’re away, or if you’re planning on taking a Uber to the airport.

Be sure to check out all the options for airport parking so you pick the one that offers the best value for money. Alyssa loves using Spot Hero for the cheapest, and easiest-to-book parking spots!

If you’re taking an Uber to the airport, book one in advance to try and avoid surcharge prices (and the stress of not knowing if there’ll be one available when you need it).

To get extra value for money, use Uber Pool – you might even meet a new travel buddy or two doing this!

6. Avoid Excess Baggage Fees

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - avoid excess baggage fees

You’re going on holiday, which means you’ll need at least five outfit changes per day, right? Just kidding!

While it can be tempting to pack a ton of outfits while traveling “just in case” you need them, the reality is you’ll only need the same few pieces of clothing for most of your travels.

Don’t believe us? Check out these epic packing tips from Alyssa. Given she only uses a carry-on for most of her travels, we trust she knows what she’s talking about!

Other tips for avoiding excess baggage fees include weighing your bags before you get to the airport. And, if you’re taking a heavy coat or sweater, wear this on the plane instead of packing it into your bag.

7. Take The Road Less Traveled

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - take the road less traveled

There’s something magical about visiting the places that everyone goes to. You know, places like Rome, Paris and New York. These places are amazing to visit and see – that’s why everyone goes there!

Of course, with tourist heavy destinations comes tourist prices. Even going into a franchise or chain store, you may find that prices are slightly higher than they are in places that aren’t as tourist dense.

The money-saving solution? Visit places that are not as popular, but equally as magical. Hello Reggio Emilia, Rouen and Philadelphia!

8. Don’t Stay In The City Centre

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - don't stay in the city centre

Well, this is kind of obvious – if you’re staying in the city centre, you will be paying city prices!

Instead, opt to stay in an Air BnB, hotel, hostel or homestay that’s close to the city. Convenient, but also much friendlier on your wallet.

Pro-tip: use a website like booking.com to compare prices across different accomodation, and to see which places offer package deals and discounts, so you can get the best value for money.

9. Eat Like A Local

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - eat like a local

Trying out different local cuisines is one of the amazing reasons to travel, obviously.

If you’re wanting to really try out incredible local cuisines and save some money, eat where the locals do!

Not only is the food likely to be more authentic and tasty, but you are also less likely to be charged pesky tourist prices.

Pro-tip: if your accomodation includes a breakfast deal, make the most of this before you head out for the day. You’ll be less likely to want to buy expensive snacks while you’re out and about, leaving extra space in your stomach for some delicious local cuisines.

10. Shop Like A Local

Shop like a local and get better value for your dollars

Because you’ll avoid all the touristy souvenirs!

Shopping at local markets and shops will mean you’re more likely to get your hands on unique local products and the prices won’t include
tourist-tax.

If the local culture allows it, you can try get more bang for your buck by bargaining on prices too. Shopping locally is also a great way to travel sustainably!

11. Walk Around

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - walk around

It’s a great way to take in local sights!

Instead of spending your money on buses, trains, trams or cabs, opt to walk around your destination as much as possible.

Your wallet and overall health will thank you!

If walking around isn’t an option, look into the travel options that the locals use. Often train and bus services offer day, week or month passes which are better value for money compared to paying for each trip on its own.

12. Do Your Research

Top Money Saving Tips For Traveling - do your research

This is a huge way to save money while traveling.

Knowing where you will be going and what you will be doing ahead of time means you can book things in advance.

This means you’ll avoid having to pay extra for things because you are booking last minute, or at a peak time.

Look up options for a cheap mobile data plan, get a local SIM card, or use free WiFi at your destinations too, so you can research on the go without spending a fortune.

13. Work While Traveling

Working while traveling is a great way to earn as you explore.

Technically this isn’t saving money while traveling, but you would be making money while traveling.

Plus, if you follow the other 12 tips in this article, then you would be saving money while making money at the same time. So that’s a bit of a win-win.

Not sure how to make money while traveling? There’s a ton of epic jobs you can do while traveling, without having to sacrifice your travel time.

  • For all the queens and princesses who aren't getting that royal treatment they deserve at home -- go to Samarkand, Uzbekistan where you can dress up and feel like it at one of the most beaitiful places in the world!

Always remember though, you are the main person who can treat yourself like royalty, and you always should!

What do you do for yourself to feel like the "royal treatment"? For me it's little things like ordering bubbles on the plane even tho I'm in economy. 😁

Comment "queen" and ill DM you my full travel itinerary and tips for Uzbekistan, including how to book this photoshoot!
  • Don’t forget to vote today, preferably for kind, cultured, people with good-morals. 😁

Trust me, I do not want politics in my posts, but once again it seems like politics are always interrupting my travels, and I had to talk about this one!

I know I get judged a lot for what I do and wear…but when it’s by a representative from the U.S. gov who is in a country where I’m wearing the local fashion of, and they laugh and make a snarky remark to another minion, that’s where I have to call someone out.

Overheard at the train station in Samarkand, Uzbekistan by a couple of my group trip guests, was “Look at that b*tch in pink” by a member of Rubio’s delegation who were there doing security checks for his upcoming visit.

The group of horribly dressed older men and one woman then had the joke on them when they were given a tour of a bazaar…where the local fashion I was wearing was prominently on display everywhere. 🫠

Just goes to show that if these Gov officials can talk badly about a U.S. citizen abroad, just imagine what they think of you all back home!

So this is my response as a very proud “b*tch in pink”, and this whole situation is a great example of WHY I always purposely wear hot pink on my travels 🤗💖

PS stop starving your own people Marcocito!!!
  • Which of these is your travel type, and is it accurate with where you’d like to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in Mexico?

Save this for future trip planning!

This is my 10th-ish year living on/off in Mexico, and I’ve been very fortunate to get to experience Dia de los Muertos in a few different cities! But no matter where you go, the most important thing is that you remember and celebrate those who have passed!!!

You can find all the events happening by searching social for “city name + Dia de los muertos events” 💀😁

Or you can just wander around the barrios or cemeteries! Not joking, the cemeteries are all open and decorated, just be sure to pay your respects and not just go for photos…

Speaking of which, all photos of me are real locations, just with a little enhancement and graphics 😬

Are you celebrating your passed loved ones today? Where??
  • Anyone else have a bunch of random currency from various countries all over the place? What do you do with it all??

I started using a cheap coupon organizer to keep track of it all, especially since I repeat many of the countries I go to, and it has been so much easier that just a bug wad of colorful bills!

If I know I likely won’t return to a country, I usually give the cash away though, or keep a small bill as a souvenir!

Never would have guessed my fanciest most valuable wallet would be the $5 one that stores priceless memories from 155 countries! (Well I don’t have cash from all of them, maybe just 50, but still!)

What’s your most valuable priceless possession?

Also if you’d like to use my shipping link, please comment “rich bc”!

  • Questions literally no one has ever asked about making 'smores or likely at the Darvaza Gas Crater (AKA "Door to Hell") in Turkmenistan.

((Comment "crater" and ill send my full blog post about how to go here! I've been twice now,))

This is a massive crater that collapsed in the desert when people were drilling for natural resources decades ago. Someone thought it would be smart to light it on fire, and it has been burning non stop ever since...

Rumors are it will close down soon for the gov to sell the gas, so go see it while you can! Or join one of my group adventures there!
  • When life brings you to the Door to HɛIl, roast some marshmallows, throw a dance party with friends, strap your seat belt on tight, and HOLD ON for a wild ride out of there! ...both figuratively and literally.

This is the famous Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenkstan, Aka the "Door to Hɛll". I went here solo last year and then recently brought my Travel Tribe which was waayyyyyy more fun...perhaps too much fun!!

First of all, I've never seen people enjoy that minivan Mario Kart race through the barren desert before 😂 or thought anyone would be down for Turkmen beer roadies.

Then the looks on all of their faces when we drove up to the gas crater at night made the journey not only worth it but priceless!

We then proceeded to have an aggressive game of UNO (a must on our adventures), too much Turkmen wine (that's similar to port) and a very uncomfortable sleepover in yurts with "Chanel" and "Versace" bedding. IYKYK.

Also, can't believe I found marshmallows there, or that one of the guides just lit a hole on fire to roast them, but the smell of gas was very unappetizing so they were not consumed (by me).

FYI everyone is still saying the Darvaza Crater will be extinguished soon so the gov can capture the gas to sell, so go see it while you can, if you're up for a truly wild adventure!!

More wild and weird stories from our 5 Stans Group Adventure coming soon! 🤪

Is this on your bucketlist??
  • Tajikistan is one of the 5 "Stans of Central Asia" and the one that most people looked at me with confusion when I list off the names of them!

But it's not surprising, since it only became an independent country in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Drop me a comment if you have questions about the geopolitics there today 😁

Traveling through Tajikistan felt like a truly unique and authentic experience, especially in the local markets and towns, since not many American citizens venture there (so we were told).

The first thing we noticed in Panjakent was that the women all had super sparkly hijabs and clothing...so we went straight to the bazaar and bought the same! We got a lot of smiles and thumbs up after that!

We then explored the 7 Lakes of the Fann Mountains, getting there early before the day trip groups, and experiencing the lakes all to ourselves while avoiding traffic jams on cliffside roads that aren't for the feint of heart!

If you do the "5 Stans", definitely do more than a day trip to Tajikistan!

And if you dont want to figure out the crazy logistics for all 5 yourself, sign up for our waiting list for the next ones with @mylifesatraveltribe
!

BTW the kids are yelling "Tajikistan the best!" and permission was asked to make the video...even though they video-bommed me 😂💖

Samarkand the second time was even more magical! Since I went here last year, they’ve now started doing these “flying dress” photoshoots at Registan Square for around $67, which was definitely worth it! Go super early (6:30-8) to avoid anyone in your photos AND to avoid annoying other travelers trying to take photos 😬 We also got a few group pics with the Travel Tribe! It’s definitely been extremely fun being here a second time with them!! Photography company tagged as a collaborator!
