How to Plan a New Zealand Camper Van Roadtrip!

If you’re thinking about doing a New Zealand camper van roadtrip, than OMGYASSS DO IT!!! I just spent the last five days driving across the South Island from Christchurch to Queenstown in a Jucy “campa”, and it was by far one of the most incredible travel experiences ever! And I did solo!

How to do a new Zealand camper van road trip

Just imagine; having your own little mobile bungalow with everything you need to survive in it, that can be easily pulled up to a lake side or waterfall. No check-ins or check-outs, just driving and parking, and access to some of the most off the beaten track areas! Plus, camper van roadtrips are like the thing to do in New Zealand! You’ll be shocked at how many you see on the road and at campsites!

So enough of me going on about how awesome this type of roadtrip is, and on to the information that you actually probably want to know!

BUT FIRST! I’ve asked my friends at Jucy to give my readers a DISCOUNT! So if you end up wanting to book a New Zealand camper van, please email the lovely Maya at heretohelp@jucyworld.com and tell them Alyssa referred you!

Ok, moving right along:

1. How to Rent a Camper Van in New Zealand

Cooking Jucy New Zealand
Don’t worry, I had absolutely no clue how to rent or use a camper van either until I got my Jucy camper in New Zealand!

There are several camper van companies now, which just goes to show you again how popular it is! New Zealand camper van rentals range from extreme budget to luxurious hotel-on-wheels, but for a modern nomad like myself, there’s Jucy. You wouldn’t be able to miss a Jucy camper if you tried, because they’re lime green with a busty red-head named Lucy on the hood, and a funny conversation piece on the side.

Mine said, “Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I drive by again?” You can probably imagine how fitting that looked with a solo female traveler behind the wheel!

Anyway! You simply book the camper van size you want for the dates you’re planning on doing your roadtrip on their website, JucyWorld.com (or as I mentioned, email Maya for a discount!). For a small fee you can drop off the van at a different location than you picked it up, or you can do a round trip. Pick up locations are at most of the airports in New Zealand, and they have a shuttle service from the terminal to the Jucy office free of charge!

2. How do Camper Vans “Work”?

Jucy sleeper area New Zealand
This is the sleeping-mode of my Jucy Cabana campa – I took out the removable table, slid the seats down, put the sheets on, and voila! My own little bedroom!

I had the Jucy “cabana”, which is the size of a mini-van, and it was perfect for just me, but could have easily fit another person. Below are some details of this specific New Zealand camper van:

  • Sleeps: 1-3 people, if you’re Ok with cuddling close
  • Costs: $115 per day, which technically includes accommodation and transportation!
  • Chilling: The middle area is transformed to be two bench style sofas that face each other
  • Eating: There is an easy to set up picnic table that attaches in the middle to form a dining area
  • Sleeping: Under one of the benches is a compartment for the pillows and blankets, and that bench slides forward to turn the entire middle area into a full-sized bed
  • Sleeping part 2: Wondering what to do about all the windows? There’s canvas flaps that unroll and buckle over all of the windows, forming the perfect little tent in the middle of the van!
  • Cooking: The trunk is transformed into a mini kitchen! Complete with a mini sink, mini refrigerator, single burner stove, and storage space for all of the kitchenware (which it also comes with)
  • Entertainment: All of the camper vans come with portable DVD players, but I’d also recommend renting the Scoot navigation, because it comes with Wifi!

The kitchen of my Jucy Cabana campa had a stove (with working water!), refrigerator, single burner stove, and storage area complete with kitchenware!

3. How to Drive a Camper Van in New Zealand

Jucy Camper New Zealand mylifesamovie.com
Always remember to drive on the LEFT! Except when there’s sheep taking up the entire road…then just drive slowly in the middle until they move….

Driving a camper van is essentially like driving a large car. Or a very large car depending on what size you get… You of course need a driver’s license to drive it, but you don’t need one from New Zealand; you can use your own from home. You also technically don’t need to have experience driving on the left side of the road, you just need to always remember LEFT LEFT LEFT!

There are plenty of road signs and arrows painted on the streets to remind you to stay left, and if you rent a Scoot, it will remind you too. If you haven’t, or aren’t used to the driver’s seat being on the right, that may feel a little weird at first too. Even after five days of driving, I STILL would accidentally walk up to the left hand side of the car to get in and drive!

Don’t be afraid to just drive slow, or pull over if you get a little paranoid! One of the other good things about doing a roadtrip in a New Zealand camper van is that there isn’t a ton of traffic or crazy drivers! Plus many of them are travelers doing roadtrips as well!

4. Where to Park Your Camper Van at Night

Wanaka campground New Zealand
There’s tons of campgrounds in New Zealand that range from free and basic, to about $20 with hot showers and wifi!

In most areas, you can’t just pull your camper van to the side of the road, set up your bed, and sleep there for the night. If you’re way out in the middle of nowhere, maybe, but you’re probably better off staying at a campground or “holiday park” anyway. That is…if you want to shower and use an actual toilet.

There are tons of campgrounds, and they’re super easy to find, especially since there are several apps specifically made for finding them. Some are free, but usually don’t include the perks of the paid ones; like hot water showers, toilets, TV rooms, and wifi.

The paid ones are still pretty cheap, so it’s really up to you and your budget. Also, when looking at the costs online; you’ll want to look at the price for “tent sites” or “non-electric” sites. Most of the Jucy campers run on the car battery and don’t need to be plugged in like an RV does!

Below are the apps and websites you can use to find campsites during your New Zealand camper van roadtrip, and that tell you the costs, what’s included, and reservation info:

I also found out that if you use the DOC campsites that are mostly geared towards conserving the land, you can buy a weekly pass for $20 that allows you to stay at any of their designated sites! You can get your pass here: DOC $20 Week Campground Pass

If you rent the Scoot navigation device, it also will show you where campgrounds are on the map, and you can click on them for their information!

Note: Make sure you check what time campground offices close! If you arrive after they close, and don’t pay the overnight fee, you can wake up with a fine that’s triple the cost!

5. Where to Go on Your Roadtrip!

Jucy New Zealand Roadtrip
Perks of roadtripping with a camper van: you can just pull up anywhere and chill. …I have no idea what I’m doing with my hand though.

I based my New Zealand camper van roadtrip itinerary on the 200+ comments I got on my Instagram when I asked for tips on the best things to see there. I literally wrote them all out, and kept a tally on how many people recommended each location. The result was a route that went from Christchurch to Queenstown on the South Island, with both the recommended stops, and a few I randomly added in.

Jucy navigation New Zealand
For an extra $8 a day you can get the Scoot navigation system which also shows you where campgrounds, food, showers, sites, etc. are…but most importantly, it also includes WIFI!!!

The beauty of doing a New Zealand camper van roadtrip though, is that if you see something that looks interesting, you can just pull over and stop! Another popular secret (I guess that doesn’t make it a secret…) is asking locals for tips. I got one from the young owners of a lavender farm shop, and literally felt like I had won some sort of scavenger hunt contest.

Check out my full South Island itinerary: “10 Best New Zealand Roadtrip Stops: South Island”

Which includes essential info (and awesome photos) of the following places:

  • Christchurch
  • Lake Tekapo
  • Lake Pukkaki
  • Wanaka
  • Rob Roy Glacier
  • Roy’s Peak
  • Queenstown
  • Milford Sound

  • Orca swimming in La Ventana, Mexico has been SUSPENDED indefinitely, but there’s more to it than you might think, so keep reading, or comment “orcas” and I’ll send you the full information about the update, future prospects, and these Sea Safari tours in general.

I know some people will automatically blame influencers for posting about swimming with orcas here (we’re used to it), but please keep in mind that many of us were posting the rules and regulations and urging people to be responsible and also that there was never an official “orca tour”, it’s always been a general Sea Safari, and seeing an orca is never guaranteed or promised.

Anyway, before the 1 year trial, there was allegedly complete chaos, with over 35 boats chasing pods and no regulations about how many boats can be near them at a time or how many swimmers and how long they could be in the water.

The trial period enforced those rules, limiting the number of boats and swimmers and how long each boat can be near the orcas. Many people listened, many did not. So that is now what the authorities are evaluating, to determine if they will continue to allow it or permanently ban it.

All of my posts had clear disclaimers about the rules and how to be a responsible traveler here, and I purposely required that people personally email me for info about the tour to make sure they understood the rules, including that there is no “orca tour” but most people still specifically asked for that.

In my opinion, after doing this experience, I don’t really think just anyone should be able to do it or run the tours…so many people just don’t listen or respect rules, and it is dangerous for the animals and themselves.

If they do allow it in the future I think it should be mandatory that a certified marine biologist is onboard most boats, that boats and captains have specific training and certifications, and that tourists have to pay an addition environmental fee so the gov can hire more people to monitor and enforce regulations. Also a smaller amount of spots allowed per day.

I don’t think observing orcas should be completely banned, otherwise people will just continue to go see them
  • Ferragosto is one of the biggest holidays in Italy, every year on August 15th! So definitely don’t come here that day unless you want to experience local celebrations in the form of beach or boat days, and massive feasts with lots of wine!

Many people celebrate with family at home or at restaurants, so make reservations in advance, and wear your feast-fit 😮‍💨😬

Same applies for boat trip reservations and the beaches that require permits in advance!

This is my 3rd summer living in Sardinia and I put all the tips on my Sardinia Travel Guide on my website! Just comment “Sardinia” and I’ll send it to you!

((Transparency — I actually don’t recommend coming here in August at all because it’s the most hot and crowded month, but if that’s your vibe, you’ll love Ferragosto!))

Have you heard of this famous Italian holiday? Can you name any of the dishes in the vid? 😁

  • You cannot go within 15 feet of animals in Antarctica. But if THEY come up to you…well…what can you do?? 😬

I’ve been to Antarctica 4 times and this was a rare occasion when a penguin suddenly waddle-ran right up to me! It took a lot of willpower not to try and bend down to get closer, but I knew to just stay still and let it observe until it walked away!

Other animals you can see in Antarctica are humpbacks, leopard seals, and Orcas!

LMK if you have any questions about Antarctica!

  • Before the term “influencer” or “content creator” existed, I was one of the original travel bloggers, unknowingly helping pioneer what is now a multibillion dollar Creator Industry.

I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand.

I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so…

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media!

I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work.

Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!)

I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going.

Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world.

So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year.

Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips.

Thank you everyone who has been here with me for so long, and welcome to anyone new!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

  • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out.

First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own!

Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious)

Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts!

In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers!

I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle)

Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..:

I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!

For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio!

And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so… Allow me to re-introduce myself. Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!) I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going. To follow along with my updates, please comment “travel

I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. ———————- For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the most traveled and most experienced solo female travelers in the world! D. However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious) Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts! In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers! I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle) Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..: I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see! For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio! ———- Please follow me @mylifesatravelmovie for more extreme adventures with purpose 💖 #alyssaramostravels #mylifeisatravelmovie #mylifeisatravelmovie
