Travel Bans in 2026 — Where U.S. Citizens Currently CANNOT Go

I’ve been to 145 countries and thought I’d seen some of the craziest travel bans and strictest entry rules — then 2026 happened. Now there’s more, and I’ve had to adjust my travel goals and plans more than ever. Between politics, safety policies, and domestic controls, some places are closed to U.S. Citizens outright, and others seem like velvet-roped clubs: you can only enter with special approval, a sponsor, or a government-issued letter of invitation.

U.S. Citizens now have a travel ban in certain regions of D.R. Congo, including Virunga National Park, where I visited just before things got really bad
This region of D.R. Congo (Virunga) now has a travel ban for U.S. citizens due to political and civil unrest

Trigger warning: due to recent political events, more countries are banning or shunning U.S. citizens, and we all know there’s likely more to come. This post is not political, it’s just to help you out, and hopefully casually show how politics do affect travel! (For those who like to tell me “keep politics out of your travel posts”….)

So that being said, DISCLAIMER – before you book, check the official government website of the country you are wanting to visit (I personally don’t trust the US website since a lot of things have been deleted and it lists nearly every country as “Do Not Travel” but feel free to check that one as well).. This post reflects the travel landscape as of January 2026 and is written to help U.S. passport holders know where travel is effectively prohibited or tightly controlled right now.

My personal opinions of countries I feel might now be a bit uh, not happy seeing U.S. citizens, is at the end.

Countries with Full Travel Bans in 2026 for U.S. Citizens

Image by Moise Perez Bekoume albani from Pixabay

There aren’t many countries who have put a full travel ban on U.S. citizens, but thanks to the U.S. gov banning citizens of these countries from entering the U.S., things have changed! So if you’ve ever dreamt of visiting Timbuktu or finally crossing North Korea off your “visit all the countries in the world-list”, you might be SOL.

These are the countries with full or near-full travel bans where U.S. citizens cannot go in 2026.

Chad

Chad sits at the crossroads of Central and North Africa, stretching from the sandy shores of Lake Chad to the sweeping dunes of the Sahara. It’s a country of striking contrasts: nomadic camel caravans in the north, vibrant markets in N’Djamena, and diverse ethnic groups whose traditions shape daily life. Despite its natural beauty and cultural richness, Chad has long navigated political transitions, regional instability, and security pressures along its borders.

Chad suspended routine visas for U.S. citizens as a reciprocal diplomatic move, effectively halting tourist and business visas.

Niger

Niger is a vast, sun‑baked country at the heart of the Sahara, known for its ancient caravan routes, dramatic desert landscapes, and the resilient cultures of the Tuareg and Fulani peoples. Cities like Agadez once thrived as crossroads of trans‑Saharan trade, and the country remains rich in music, storytelling, and nomadic heritage. Despite its cultural depth, Niger has undergone major political shifts in recent years, including a military transition and a realignment of regional alliances.

Visa issuance to U.S. citizens has been suspended or sharply limited, citing reciprocity and political tensions.

Mali

Mali is one of West Africa’s cultural giants — home to the legendary city of Timbuktu, the Niger River’s sweeping bends, and musical traditions that have influenced genres around the world. Its history is tied to powerful empires like Mali and Songhai, and its artisans, griots, and desert festivals remain globally admired. In recent years, however, Mali has faced political transitions, security challenges, and shifting international partnerships.

Similar to Niger, Mali is adopting the reciprocal diplomatic measures and limited visa processing for Americans and is also said to have heightened scrutiny.

Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a culturally vibrant West African nation known for its warm hospitality, dynamic art and music scene, and deep Mossi traditions. Its landscapes range from savanna plains to lively market cities like Ouagadougou and Bobo‑Dioulasso, both hubs of film, dance, and artisan craftsmanship. Despite its rich cultural identity, the country has faced years of political upheaval and security challenges, especially in its northern and eastern regions. Burkina Faso is also suspending tourist visas for U.S. citizens as reciprocity.

North Korea

There aren’t many U.S. citizens who probably even want to go to North Korea, but for the extremely curious, adventurous, and also people like me with a goal of experiencing every country, it is still on the to-go list.

For a long time now though, U.S. passports cannot be used for independent travel; visits only occur as part of tightly controlled, approved delegations and require U.S. Department of State validation in most cases.  There used to be some low-key day trips that allow you to cross the border from South Korea, but the gov halted that several years ago.

Countries with Partial Travel Bans in 2026

Here’s a different type of travel ban — the kind that still makes it possible to travel, but it’s a lot harder and usually requires approval or even a letter of invitation!

You cannot just go to any of these places as a tourist and do whatever you want. You need permission, an organized tour, and where you can go might be limited.

Here’s some of the countries with partial travel bans in 2026:

Cuba

Cuba has partial travel bans for U.S. citizens, but they can still go for one of twelve reasons - mylifesamovie.com

Cuba is the country where my ancestors are from, and I am deeply passionate and sensitive about travels there. Yes, it is beautiful, fun, and “whimsically stuck in the past”, but the Cuban people suffer drastically because of it. If you go to Cuba, please fully support the locals through purchases, donations, and amplifying their voices.

U.S. citizens are technically prohibited from going to Cuba, but “just for tourist purposes”. They cannot stay at or spend money at any establishment (like hotels) that are owned by the government. If they are caught doing so, the new Trump rules state a fine of $250,000.

You can still go to Cuba however, as long as you have a tour with activities that abide by one of the 12 approved reasons for travel there, such as “Support for the Cuban People”.

Please check out my many blog posts about Cuba for information on how to travel there legally, legitimately, and safely!

Iran

Tourist visas typically require a confirmed itinerary and sponsorship from an Iranian tour operator or travel agency; solo independent travel is difficult and usually requires a local sponsor. U.S. citizens face additional vetting and higher risk of delays or denial due to currently political conflicts.

U.S. citizens, especially women, who are not familiar with the current political/religions customs for women face an increased risk of traveling to Iran and Afghanistan, where full body coverage including hijabs are mandatory.

Recent violence between the government and civilians, where protestors are being executed by the thousands, along with Trump’s threats to attack Iran again, have also highly increased the risks for U.S. travelers to go there.

Turkmenistan

travel bans in 2026, Turkmenistan has a strict visa process
Turkmenistan’s difficult visa process was well worth seeing things like this!

Turkmenistan is one of the most fascinating, bizarre, and difficult countries that I’ve ever entered. It requires an official tour that must submit your information for prior government approval and an official letter of invitation.

Areas that tourists can access is very limited. I traveled to Turkmenistan solo, and getting the LOI was easy, however actually getting the visa at the land border was very tedious and took around 3 hours! It’s worth it though to see the now-dwindling Door to Hell, and the extremely peculiar all-white city of Ashgabat.

Check out my blog posts about Turkmenistan here: Turkmenistan: 11 Bizarre Yet Beautiful Things to Experience

Russia

Tourist visas require a tourist voucher/confirmation issued by a Russian travel company or authorized accommodation and an official invitation; visitors must enter on the specified itinerary. For U.S. citizens, visa processing can be politicized and subject to reciprocal diplomatic measures.  AKA, they may deny you simply for being from the U.S.

Bhutan

Bhutan requires an organized tour, special permission, and daily tourist fees! mylifesamovie.com
Bhutan doesn’t have a travel ban, more like intense restrictions, like needing to be invited, and pay a daily tourist fee.

Typically, Bhutan is well known for the famous Tiger’s Nest Temple, but there’s so much more to see and learn about! I traveled to Bhutan solo and found it was incredibly safe, pristine, and one of the most well-preserved traditional cultures. This preservation takes a lot of effort, which can be seen in the government’s strict measures to control selective tourism.

All visitors in general must book through an authorized tour operator, pay the mandatory Sustainable Development Fee, and obtain government permits; independent travel is not possible.  A daily visitor fee is also implemented here, and it’s pretty expensive!

Here’s all of my blogs about Bhutan:

Algeria

I tried to go to Algeria last year on a whim, and although I had a tour company ready to sponsor me and give me the letter of invitation, there was no way I’d be able to pull it off last minute. The visa requires you to go into an actual embassy or consulate to submit your papers and get the visa, and it can take several weeks to do it!

Venezuela

U.S. citizens can still travel to Venezuela, but the process is heavily restricted. Because the U.S. Embassy in Caracas is closed, Americans must apply for a visa outside the United States, often in places like Mexico or the Dominican Republic, and approvals can be slow or inconsistent.

Once in the country, travelers face serious safety concerns, frequent checkpoints, and no reliable U.S. consular support. There’s no official ban on Americans entering Venezuela, but the combination of difficult visa access, no U.S. diplomatic presence, and Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warnings make visiting extremely challenging in practice.

I heard from a Venezuelan friend recently that with the recent capture of Maduro, there is high hopes that entering Venezuela will be a lot easier for travelers, however it still remains very dangerous due to civil unrest.

Countries Effectively Closed to Tourists as of 2026 Because of War, Conflict, or Extreme Instability

socotra island is not included in Yemen's travel bans by Alyssa Ramos mylifesamovie.com @mylifesatravelmovie
Socotra Island is technically part of Yemen but they have special permission to allow travelers there, unlike mainland.

These places carry Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisories and are not practical destinations for leisure travel. Several websites state that the borders are “closed to tourists”, however if you qualify for certain reasons to travel, you may be admitted entry.

  • Syria — Ongoing conflict, very high risk of kidnapping and violence.
  • Afghanistan — Active insurgency and terrorism; no routine consular services.
  • Yemen — Civil war and military operations; travel life‑threatening.
  • Palestine — Active conflict and humanitarian crisis; tourist travel impossible.
  • Libya — Fragmented control, militia violence, kidnapping risk.
  • Somalia — Terrorism, piracy, clan violence; large areas unsafe.
  • Sudan and South Sudan — Widespread violence and instability.
  • Ukraine — Front‑line conflict areas closed to tourists.
  • D.R. Congo — Technically not closed, but certain regions are completely off limits.

Plot Twist: Countries Banned from Entering the U.S.

If you’re catching the gist of this post and of my ongoing point that politics has a lot to do with travel, you’ll get why knowing this list of countries banned from entering the U.S. is important.

Something highly important I’ve learned from traveling for the last 12 years, is that most people in other countries are kind, good people. They welcome and appreciate travelers, and want them to experience their country and culture.

However, with Trump’s second term going the way that it is, I have to admit that I’ve now been seeing a mix of welcoming, suspicious, pity, and resentment. So be sure to keep this list in mind, as well as anything else that the US government has done recently to these countries, before you go there!

Here are the countries with a full or partial bans for entering the U.S. :

Practical Travel Tips for U.S. Citizens in 2026:

travel bans in 2026
Always make sure to triple check the travel bans for the countries you want to go to, and make sure you have all visas

As someone who has been denied entry to a country for assuming there was visa on arrival (Ethiopia), and missed flights for not having a visa for a layover country, I can tell you some practical travel trips for 2026. Especially with all these new bans, changes, and shifts in feelings about people from the U.S.

  1. Verify the destination’s embassy/consulate visa rules and on the country’s official website before booking anything. You don’t want to find out it’s impossible to get a visa after you’ve booked flights and hotels!

2. For countries that require an official tour, voucher, or invitation (Iran, Russia, Bhutan, North Korea, Turkmenistan), book through an authorized operator well in advance and keep confirmations handy for your visa application.  Don’t pay for anything until you get the visa!

3. Once your visa is confirmed, and you are booking flights, make sure to check for any additional layover visa requirements, such as proof of ongoing flight or hotel, or if something needs to be printed.

4. Check the latest news platforms IN the country you are going to or look up local influencers to see what they are posting about. This will give you an accurate idea about how the people there feel towards U.S. citizens. Most of the time, the people dislike the government, and understand that the travelers are mostly innocent, but some countries can dislike everyone in general.

5. Expect rules to change quickly — check immediately before departure.

Please don’t forget! I work extremely hard to produce these free travel guides and posts! If it helped you, or you enjoyed it, PLEASE give it a share on social media, and follow me to keep up with more posts! You’re two minutes of effort truly helps keep my business running! Thank ya!

  • True story: I did not speak any Italian (besides ciao, grazie, and vino) and my husband didn’t speak any English when we first met!!

We used translation apps and some Spanish (he understands because Sardinian sounds similar) but when I first moved here, to a small traditional town where not many people speak English, it was very, very evident that I needed to learn Italian.

Knowing Spanish didn’t help me. The conjugations are completely different and so are most words (dislike when ppl assume I learned bc of that).

And full immersion didn’t force me to learn either, bc my ADHD would just tune out. Apps also easily bored me.

So I looked up online tutors and found Preply, which has thousands of real humans to teach you face to face online, and they can customize your lessons to your learning style and needs.

I’ve been doing Italian lessons twice a week for almost 3 years now, and the online tutors are the main reason why I can speak conversational Italian now!

So if you dream of meeting your partner randomly in another country, or planning to move abroad, and you want to learn the language (or just want to learn one for fun), check out my blog post and please use my link on there for a discount and affil for me! Mylifesamovie.com !

My current tutor Lara is amazing, she does my Italian lessons also in English and Spanish so I don’t forget my native tongue! Also doubles as an unofficial therapist 😂😂

Last, let this bring some hope and inspo to my fellow solo female travelers! If you haven’t found your partner yet, he may be waiting for you in another country!!

  • A pod of 15 Orcas surrounded our small boat in La Ventana, Mexico… my reaction was squealing like a child and I even cried a few tears (don’t tell anyone).

Then, after careful behavioral assessment by our marine biologist guide, we were given permission to swim with them for about 2 minutes!

I cried even more after that, it was one of the most magical moments of my life!

This was an ethical Sea Safari trip with an experienced, animals-first, women-run company. Orca tours do not exist since you cannot predict when they will show up.

There are also many rules and regulations to keep this safe and ethical, so please check out my other posts about it, and for info on how to book this trip, search “orcas” on my blog - mylifesamovie.com!

  • Everyone raves about the viral Storm Spa in Chongqing China being so cool but meanwhile I was on the verge of a panic attack in there feeling like I fell overboard during the Drake Passage 😳

I am still unsure why an extreme storm was chosen for a spa…but I can at least say the beginning where it’s sunny, and the end where there’s randomly northern lights, was nice!

The ROOMS of the hotel where this spa is at are incredible though! They’re the also-viral ones where there’s a huge clear pool in the rooms!

But fun fact.. it’s not a full sized hotel…they only own a few floors of a skyscraper, which is genius bc they can spend less on maxxing out the rooms and still get booked out!

Oh and the Storm Spa session (30 mins) is included with the room! And the sister hotel includes a photoshoot 🤩

Should I post room tours of them?

All of the information for these viral Chongqing hotels and also Chongqing cyberpunk city in general are on my blog, including the CORRECT links to each hotel (online it’s very confusing bc they all have the same name!)

Also I need to know who would love this and who would hate it, am I the only one?? 😂
  • 10/10 the best self defense lesson and stress relief retreat ever in Fukushima, Japan 🥷🏼😂

You can take samurai lessons with a real life samurai (and famous youtuber) and then practice on the cardboard “enemy”, and later go steam it out at the onsen!

Full info and itinerary on my blog, including how to book it! There’s not many tour options here in Fukushima so the best option is to get there by car 😬
  • I hate that IG has changed so much that each of these photos can’t have their own individual post. Or should they? I think they should, but IG literally says to do Carousels and Reels…then I end up not posting so many unique moments, that I once used to post individually almost every day!

I miss those days and I’m so grateful I started all of this when a single photo post was all you did…a thousand words in one photo.

How do I even explain what each of these photos held? I can write it on my blog but 🤖 will just summarize me in the search results. I can spend hours making a reel, only for the system to analyze it’s not interesting enough ugh because not enough people watched past 6 seconds (yes that is the current algorithm)

So I guess I’ll just keep my memories in my mind and share the tips and pretty photos!

And keep trying to add in those BTS moments, like the last one, which is what we were actually doing most of the time 😂

Definitely a major highlight of this #fukushima trip was the Samurai class and the onsen town, I’d go back there for both! All of I was very stress relieving!

Anyone missing the one photo post days? Or wishing they could take a Samurai class right now? 😬

  • Don’t go to Japan and ONLY visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, when there are beautiful hidden gems like Fukushima, just an hour train ride away!

I’ve been to Japan six times now, and have visited six prefectures as well, and I can honestly say that Fukushima was so impressive, that we extended our stay!

I know some people hear “Fukushima” and associate it with the tragedy that happened there in the past, but that was 15 years ago, and today Fukushima is not only safe, but thriving with nature, culture, and traditional, unique experiences!

Some of my favorite things to do there were:

- Take a Samurai class (GREAT for stress relief)
- Stay at a Ryokan and go to the many onsens
- Make your own sushi and eat a lot of it!
- Visit the Fukushima Museum of Art to see famous pieces and traditional ones
- Stroll around Ouchi Juku old town and eat the soba noodles with a giant green onion
- Go for a hike in the mountain National Parks or boat ride on the lakes

This is also where we did that fun little self-made “free foot spa crawl”, and I’d honestly go back just to do that and stay in that area again! (Actually we might, anyone want to join?)

All of the information to plan your trip to Fukushima is on my blog, and also more BTS videos are on the highlight on my profile!

Which of these sounds most magical to you?

  • Only 0.01% of humans have passed 80 degrees North latitude and guess who’s one of them? THIS GIRL! (And 26 of my Travel Tribe friends) 💪🏽

Sailing through the Arctic Pack Ice is a huge achievement because that means you’re close to the North Pole (90 degrees North), which you can only reach via the Pack Ice (so if it’s melted…you can’t reach it)

In the past this area was only traveled by famous explorers, meanwhalers/trappers/hunters, researchers, photographers, and wealthy adventurers, and also mostly men (shocker, I know).

Then there’s us, reaching 81 degrees North, mostly because we want to see Polar Bears and other wildlife, and tick the Arctic Circle off of our bucketlist!

I’m pretty proud to be an unconventional female adventurer, and to be able to “influence” others to do the same!

I may not look the stereotypical part of an explorer; but let me tell you how much warmer that girl in the hot pink swimsuit was in the jacuzzi looking for polar bears than everyone else was!! (Well, at least having extra amounts of fun 😂)

I’m so grateful to have been to Svalbard twice now, it’s truly a peculiar and interesting place!

If it’s on your to-go list, drop me a comment and I’ll send you the info for this trip plus five-hundo-off 😁

  • Happy World Ocean Day! Here’s some ocean insights from someone who has swam in all 5 oceans (can anyone name them?), has crossed the Drake Passage 8 times and recently voyaged through Arctic pack ice, who has scuba dove in over 30 countries, learned to free dive only because they’re trying to keep up with animals, and has developed a severe obsession with swimming with marine apex predators, and all the creatures!

First and foremost — the Ocean is more powerful than humans are. Don’t mess with it or it will mess with you.

One of the many things I learned during the lectures in Antarctica is that krill (tiny little animals that 🐋’s eat) is in danger of being over-fished, so avoid products that use it.

Try to only eat locally caught fish, avoid big companies that use ghost nets — the number one killer of marine animals aside from actual hunting, and yes, people still do that too in places like Japan, Iceland, Faroe Islands, and USA.

Speaking of the U.S… the place I’m from, FLORIDA, is one of the top killers of my beloved SHARKS, and right now the gov is trying to stop Shark tourism there, such as diving with sharks (my favorite hobby), something that really does protect these extremely necessary animals as opposed to all the people there that kill them for business or for FUN 😡

Some will say that this and other swimming with marine animal excursions are “unethical” but guess what happens if there’s no tourism demand? They kill them to sell. I’ve seen it over the years and I’m highly experienced with ethical and non-ethical tourism!

So for this World Ocean Day, I am asking you to please share this post, and sign the petition on my Stories against the stopping of shark diving in Florida!

And if you sign it and want to come with me next time I visit for the holidays, I’ll give you first dibs and a discount and also a glass of my vino!!!

Thank you for reading this if you got this far! I know I write too much!

  • People always ask if I’m afraid an Orca is going to come attack me whenever I post my Polar Plunge videos, so here’s me doing my 4th Polar Plunge mixed with me snorkeling peacefully with Orcas a month earlier in Mexico.

The only records of Orcas attacking humans are the ones forced into captivity, so just don’t support zoos and aquariums, and you’ll have no problem plunging! 😁

This Polar Plunge was my first one in the Arctic (Svalbard, the other 3 in Antarctica) and as much as I dread the cold, I always hype up to do it — actually a crew member explained it better than I’ve ever heard: “The shock on your body is like doing c****aine but without the crash” (I don’t do that but it was funny).

I actually only fear being cold the moments beforehand, and the jacuzzi being full. Marine animals are always hoped for, though maybe not a Polar Bear!

Health assessments and safety hardnesses are always required for Polar Plunges off expeditions ships.

Animal behavior evaluation and strong swimming skills is required for swimming with Orcas, at least with ethical operators!

Info for both adventures are on my website, linked in bio!

Would you Polar Plunge ?!?! Someone please drop the new orca emoji, I haven’t updated my phone yet!

I hate that IG has changed so much that each of these photos can’t have their own individual post.

Don’t go to Japan and ONLY visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, when there are beautiful hidden gems like Fukushima, just an hour train ride away! Some of my favorite things to do there were: - Take a Samurai class (GREAT for stress relief) - Stay at a Ryokan and go to the many onsens - Make your own sushi and eat a lot of it! - Visit the Fukushima Museum of Art to see famous pieces and traditional ones - Stroll around Ouchi Juku old town and eat the soba noodles with a giant green onion - Go for a hike in the mountain National Parks or boat ride on the lakes This is also where we did that fun little self-made “free foot spa crawl”, and I’d honestly go back just to do that and stay in that area again! (Actually we might, anyone want to join?) All of the information to plan your trip to Fukushima is on my blog, and also more BTS videos are on the highlight on my profile! Which of these sounds most magical to you? #Fukushima #FukushimaTravel #JapanTravelTips #japan #solotravel

Only 0.01% of humans have passed 80 degrees North latitude and guess who’s one of them? THIS GIRL! (And 26 of my Travel Tribe friends) 💪🏽 Sailing through the Arctic Pack Ice is a huge achievement because that means you’re close to the North Pole (90 degrees North), which you can only reach via the Pack Ice (so if it’s melted…you can’t reach it) In the past this area was only traveled by famous explorers, meanwhalers/trappers/hunters, researchers, photographers, and wealthy adventurers, and also mostly men (shocker, I know). (Well, at least having extra amounts of fun 😂) I’m so grateful to have been to Svalbard twice now, it’s truly a peculiar and interesting place! If it’s on your to-go list, drop me a comment and I’ll send you the info for this trip plus five-hundo-off 😁 Drone footy by the Polar Latitudes Photographers who have a permit to fly there (guests cannot): @vegarabelsnes @stevenrosephotography #svalbard #packice #thearctic #arcticexpedition #womenwhoexplore

Happy World Ocean Day! Speaking of the U.S… the place I’m from, FLORIDA, is one of the top killers of my beloved SHARKS, and right now the gov is trying to stop Shark tourism there, such as diving with sharks (my favorite hobby), something that really does protect these extremely necessary animals as opposed to all the people there that kill them for business or for FUN 😡 Some will say that this and other swimming with marine animal excursions are “unethical” but guess what happens if there’s no tourism demand? They kill them to sell. I’ve seen it over the years and I’m highly experienced with ethical and non-ethical tourism! So for this World Ocean Day, I am asking you to please share this post, and sign the petition on my Stories against the stopping of shark diving in Florida! And if you sign it and want to come with me next time I visit for the holidays, I’ll give you first dibs and a discount and also a glass of my vino!!! Thank you for reading this if you got this far! I know I write too much! 🐳🐋🦭🐟🐠🦈🦈🦈🦈

People always ask if I’m afraid an Orca is going to come attack me whenever I post my Polar Plunge videos, so here’s me doing my 4th Polar Plunge mixed with me snorkeling peacefully with Orcas a month earlier in Mexico. The only records of Orcas attacking humans are the ones forced into captivity, so just don’t support zoos and aquariums, and you’ll have no problem plunging! 😁 This Polar Plunge was my first one in the Arctic (Svalbard, the other 3 in Antarctica) and as much as I dread the cold, I always hype up to do it — actually a crew member explained it better than I’ve ever heard: “The shock on your body is like doing c****aine but without the crash” (I don’t do that but it was funny). #polarplunge #orcas #swimmingwithorcas #svalbard
