10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
When flying was a luxury…sigh

Once upon a time, flying on a plane to a destination other than your own hometown used to be considered a luxury! Ah yes, taking a flight used to be thought of as so fancy that people would actually dress up for their flights, and look nice, and have manners, and be considerate of others, etc, etc.

Now….not so much. I’m not sure if people don’t notice how they appear in public, or if they just don’t give a sh*t, but when you have to be in a flying freaking capsule with no outside air for prolonged amounts of time, you need to adhere to some sort of flight etiquette. Unless of course, you want to be added to the category of worst possible people to sit next to on a plane. Just sayin.

First of all, have you ever walked on a fashion runway? Because the second you step inside of any airport, you’re pretty much on one. Everyone, and I mean, everyone, is looking at you and judging you as you innocently make your way to your terminal. No pressure. It’s human nature to observe and evaluate others (AKA judge them), that’s just how it goes.

That being said, you might as well look good while it’s happening. Aside from the fact that you should be grateful for the luxury of being able to fly to wherever you’re going, you should also be grateful for being able to dress yourself as a human. That being said, some general flight etiquette tips for you:

1. No Pajamas

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
I don’t care how comfy you are, the airport is NOT your bedroom!

The plane is not your bedroom. Forget the whole, “Oh I want to be comfy for my flight so I’m going to wear my pajamas”- excuse. No. Would you invite 200 strangers in your bedroom while you curl up in your ‘jamie’s’ and watch a movie? I hope not. Nobody wants to see you in your sweats, and even if you don’t care what other people want, don’t be selfish, spare people the unsightly appearance of how you look before bed…you have ONE significant other for a reason.

2. No Flip Flops

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
………EW

If you wear flip flops on a plane, you’re an asshole. Nobody wants to see, or smell, or come in contact with your feet. Oh, you don’t think anyone will mind or notice your unkept and unsightly toenails? They will. And it’s rude not to care about what other people have to endure. Your feet in flip flops are also pretty much a health hazard due to the prokaryotes that grow and accumulate while you walk, which is almost a justifiable method of Ebola transfer. It’s not, but I could totally make certain people believe it is.

Plus, when you take your shoes off to walk through TSA or to “air out” your already disgustingly aired out feet on the plane, you risk the chance of not only transferring your gnarly, sweaty germs to others, but infesting yourself with other fellow flip-floppers’ foot fungus as well. Which leads me to my next point.

3. Bring Your Own Socks For TSA Checkpoints

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
You could be standing where this guy was standing.

Unfortunately, my genius idea to invent disposable socks for people to cover their feet with when they go through TSA checkpoints will probably be invented by the time I post this, but oh well. I thought of this because I’m overly observant and noticed the slime that is ever-present on the floor from the time you take your shoes off and put them on the security conveyor belt, to the time you pick them back up on the other end of the x-ray machine….where thousands of people have walked barefoot every day.

The solution: bring your own pair of cheap socks and pack them in the front pocket of your carry-on. Even if you already have socks on, I’d still put protective socks over them…unless you want that airport floor grime to go into the cute shoes that you’re wearing.

4. Invest in In-Flight Fashion

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
They get it.

Believe it or not, there are certain styles of clothing specific for traveling on planes. All consist of closed toed shoes, a travel bag, pants (I don’t agree with the shorts in the photo, always wear pants, you don’t know how many butts have touched your seat), a comfortable yet stylish top, something to layer over it, and sunglasses. It’s really quite simple. Aside from looking like a respectable, presentable human being, you’ll be ready to go when you get off the plane. Plus, you never know who you might meet on a plane…don’t act like you aren’t secretly wishing that hottie you spotted coming down the aisle sits down next to you.

5. Prepare For Global Warming

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
I wouldn’t advise shorts…you don’t know who farted on the seat before you sat on it…

“OMG it’s so hot, why doesn’t my vent work?!”, “OMG now I’m freezing, where’s that gross plane blanket?!”. The temperature on your plane is about as bipolar as your ex, but don’t act like you didn’t already know that. Before take-off it’s going to be hot, and no, they cannot “turn the air on”, otherwise everyone would die from gas fumes. Layer your clothing so that you can take off a warmer layer pre-flight, then gradually add them back on once the cold front hits at 30,000 feet.

Oh, and I’d suggest not using that plane blanket. I’m not staking any claims, but you can just go ahead and let your mind wander with how many people have touched that thing.

5. Pre-pack Your Carry-On

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
Pack your necessities for your flight in your carry-on like your laptop, charger, sanitary products, makeup, eye mask, wallet, sunglasses, headphones, and book.

Nothing is more annoying than a person who has to constantly get up to get something out of the overhead bin. I almost feel as though some people do it on purpose, as if they want everyone to see them stretching up and over in all directions. But I’m also pretty sure no one enjoys an ass in their face, or constantly having to shuffle out of their seat so you can get by.

You already know you’re going to need headphones, your laptop, laptop charger (if you fly on a good flight like Virgin America), gum, your phone, hand sanitizer, your credit card,  and entertainment materials, so put all of those items in your “personal bag” that can fit under the seat in front of you before you take off. That storage space above you is called storage for a reason.

7. Be Hygienic

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
Just kidding…you really can’t get Ebola that easily…but bring hand sanitizer for all of the other gross things you can get.

For some terrible reason, everyone looks and smells gross after a flight. Maybe it’s because of the obscene amount of bacteria floating around, or the fact that the cabin air is as dry as the Sahara Desert (fact), but either way, you’re going to be prone to grossness. Aside from the obvious hygienic endeavors like wearing deodorant, and showering before your flight, you might want to invest in some additional carry-on cleanliness like face wipes, hand sanitizer, and Lysol spray. Just assume that nothing is thoroughly cleaned before you touch it. Ever.

On long flights I even packed travel-size face wash, baby wipes, and a toothbrush and toothpaste so that I can take a cat-bath in the bathroom before landing.

8. Control Your Bodily Functions

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
Don’t be these people.

If you’ve been on a plane, you’ve experienced that inevitable disgusting stench that briefly fills the air then lingers around since it has no where to go. Don’t be that guy who farts on the plane and forces everyone around you to suffer. If you can’t hold it in, get up and go to the bathroom, don’t be gross. If you have the sniffles, or a cough, or a dry mouth, and you know this prior to getting on a plane, take something for it beforehand so you don’t gross everyone out with your constant noises and spreading of germs.

9. Be Polite

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
Keep it Classy.

Unless you’re mother never taught you any manners, there’s absolutely no excuse for not being polite in general, let alone when you’re in a confined space with dozens of strangers. Help people struggling to lift their bags in the over head compartment (i.e. me), be patient when boarding and de-boarding (it’s not a race), thank your flight attendants and pilots, say excuse me when you have to ask your row to get up when you have to go to the bathroom, don’t talk unnecessarily loudly for attention, don’t give people not adhering to these rules dirty looks (or at least try not to), and so on and so forth.

10. Be Friendly

10 Tips For Proper Plane Etiquette
You could meet the love of your life on a plane…but not if you’re wearing sweatpants.

I’m not saying go join the mile high club with a complete stranger, but just remember that everyone on board paid just as much as you did, and is probably just as prone to irritation as you are. Giving a friendly smile, laugh, comment, or even conversation can make your flight so much more enjoyable for all parties. It’ll also make your flight attendants’ job a lot easier, which could possibly score you some free wine or a wifi pass! Again, you never know who you may meet on a flight, so always make sure to keep your plane etiquette on point!

I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand.

I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so…

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media!

I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work.

Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!)

I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going.

Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world.

So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year.

Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips.

Thank you everyone who has been here with me for so long, and welcome to anyone new!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

  • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out.

First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own!

Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious)

Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts!

In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers!

I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle)

Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..:

I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!

For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio!

  • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North!

For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it!

There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica!

Anyone else have cool tattoos?

  • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂

People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!

Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂
  • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia!

I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this!

This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂

Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).

What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?!

  • I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Swipe to see each caption for the name and location of these beauties (and some just bizarre!)

I have a full list with links of the hotels here and ones I’ve posted about, linked on my bio! Please use those links if you book these places bc most don’t pay me to give this free publicity so the way I can monetize is using the links, it costs you nothing, and helps me a lot, thanks!! 😁😁😁

The currently viral @shebara resort in Saudi Arabia with UFO looking over-water bungalows! Costs around $2-4k per night and doesn’t include the transfer to get to the island…

Check out my Shebara blog post for full details!

Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while..

You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too.

I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!)

I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!!

These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy?

One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget!

The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi!

One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide!

Scotland surprised me a lot with its incredible hotel options! Namely, all of the castles! There’s so many of them!!!

An incredibly u
  • Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare?

This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there.

Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”.

Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡

Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater).

Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real!

I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com

And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica! Anyone else have cool tattoos? ——————- For anyone new here: Hi! This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times! Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂

I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it). What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?! —————— For anyone new here: Hi! I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real! I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com ————————— For anyone new here: Hi!
