18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make

by Alyssa Ramos

After traveling to 6 continents and almost 30 countries, I’ve had my fair share of travel mistakes and fails, and witnessed even more of them. Luckily, that means I can compile these mistakes into a list to help other travelers avoid my same misfortunes. You’re welcome.

1. Not Researching Best LOCAL Areas to Stay In

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Ao Nang is the nicer, classier, local part of Thailand’s beaches

Don’t just go straight for the hotels that are in the most well-known areas of where you’re going. Those are typically the most overpriced, and located in touristy areas where you won’t get much of an experience. Look up local blogs or bloggers in the area for suggestions like I did with my Blogger Guides.

2. Not Researching What to Wear

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Our tank tops and shorts were “too sexy” so we had to wear smelly robes to enter the Wat Pho Temple

Your cut-off jean shorts and tank tops ain’t gunna fly in places like Italy and Spain. Many countries consider certain clothing inappropriate, and even offensive, not to mention can make you stick out like a sore thumb and make you an easy target for theft. Most fashion magazines and websites have branches in other countries, shocking, I know, so just look them up to help with your packing list.

3. Not Considering Climate/Hemisphere Changes

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Tiny bit freezing in South Africa

You would think Africa and Australia would be hot right? NOPE. I’ll admit, I initially didn’t consider the opposing hemispheres, so booked my trip for the summer, but even after researching the weather, finding out it would be cold, and asking for packing advice, I was still freezing. Like, to the point where people were giving me coats and boots.

4. Not Looking Up Current News Affairs

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Look familiar? Good. Because that damn Hangover movie made them jack drink prices up to $30 USD each.

SO, this one was kind of my fault. I knew there was a Military Coup in Bangkok, and I knew that a Malaysia Airlines plane went missing, and another one shot down…but went anyway. Malaysia Airlines turned out to be Ok, just slightly terrifying, but the Military Coup mandated a 9pm curfew, so I was trapped in my hotel the only night I was there. Luckily I knew this, so booked a room at Lebua at State Tower (the “Hangover” hotel) so I could at least drink at their rooftop bar…however I ended up spending wayyyyy too much money on that little idea.

5. Not Bringing Multiple Forms of Money

After a week in Thailand I was debit and credit card-less. HUGE fail. I would say bring a third credit card…but I’m pretty sure I would have lost or gotten that one stolen as well. I did a pretty not terrible job at wiring myself money…which reminds me…look up Western Union locations ahead of time…but it still sucked. So in addition to bringing multiple cards, also bring travelers cheques, and place them all in different compartments of your luggage as back-ups.

6. Not Making Copies of Your Passport

What are you going to do if you lose your passport in a foreign country? Cry? Just kidding. You can get a temporary one from your country’s embassy in the country you’re in…but it’ll take a ridiculously long time if you have no proof of identification. That’s why it’s important to make multiple copies of your passport and also hide them in different compartments of your luggage.

7. Not Picking Your Seat Early on Your Flight

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Luckily, I did not have this problem on Malaysia Airlines.

Unless you’re booking a last minute flight or flying Southwest…you typically get your pick of seats on the flight when you book it. Obvious right? Sure, but if you can’t get the seat you want (i.e. only middle seats are left), check back again right before the flight date for cancellations, or leave it unassigned and hope for an upgrade.

8. Not Knowing Money Conversions

‘Thailand is soooo cheap’ they said, ‘the conversion rate is sooooo great’, they said, but when everything is soooooo cheap, you tend to forget how much you’re spending. Mostly because you just give whatever they say without thinking of how much you’re actually spending. Make a cheat sheet of the basic amount conversions ($1, $5, $10, $20, $50 etc) and store it in your bag or on your phone for quick reference. OH, and make sure you either give away or covert your cash at the airport of the country YOU’RE IN before you leave. Otherwise you’ll be stuck with $50 in coins that you can’t convert….like me.

9. Not Changing Your Phone Plan

Have you ever been on a trip that costed less than your phone bill did when you got home? Because I have. FAIL. It was because I forgot to switch my phone plan before I left. I have AT&T and they have pretty good data packages. By the way, you only need data roaming. You can call people for free using Skype, and can message people for free with Whatsapp and Facebook chat when you have wifi OR using your precious amount of data megabytes. Make sure you monitor your data usage…you go over…you’re going to cry. There are apps for that.

10. Not Bringing Multiple Adaptors

Oh you think one universal adaptor is all you need for your trip? Fail. How many devices do you use? How many adaptors do you lose? How many faulty travel travel items do you buy that end up breaking? Yeah. Buy more than one.

11. Not Knowing How To Appropriately Greet People

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
“How do you say ‘hi’ in monkey?”

Nothing is worse than being an obnoxious tourist. Before you go somewhere, try to research and learn how to properly greet people in the country you’re going to. Make it a point to learn how to say “hi, how are you, please, and thank you”, in the native language. Trust me, it’ll go a long way, both beneficially, and safety-wise.

12. Not Being Considerate of the Culture Differences

Woooooo, look at you on vacation in Phuket, being an obnoxious American tourist per usual. Don’t do that. You’ll not only piss off the majority of the people around you, but you’ll also miss out on meeting great locals, getting deals, and learning about other people.

13. Not Having Common Sense About Safety

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Meh, common sense is overrated anyway.

Yes, we all enjoy going out and getting hammered when we’re traveling…but don’t be an idiot about it. If you’re going to get drunk in a foreign country, make sure you have a buddy or five with you, just in case a shady man with a machête wants your wallet. Don’t get drunk by yourself, always know where you’re staying, and what your emergency contacts are. Don’t flash around expensive purses, wallets, shoes, clothes, etc. Just don’t be stupid.

14. Spending Too Much Time on Social Media

I know, I know…’it doesn’t count unless you posted it on Instagram’. Well tell that to your phone bill, and to the time you wasted looking at your phone rather than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Social media has given us all social anxiety and a separation disorder with our smartphones, causing us to miss out on actual life, not to mention ‘text neck’. Put. The phone. DOWN. And go see whatever it is that you’re there to see.

15. Spending Too Much Time in The Hotel Room

Take some Pinterest tutorials on how to get ready quickly, and save resting for when you’re dead. Get out there and go see as much as possible because chances are you won’t be going back to where you’re at any time soon. Also, as big as a fan as I am of sleeping in…and this pains me to say…at least try to wake up early. Even though alarm clocks and mornings both suck.

16. Traveling With Someone You Butt Heads With

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Please go away.

When you’re with someone else, you’re on their time as well as your own. If they wake up late, take forever to get ready, annoy you with their constant chatter, smell weird, don’t share the same interests, etc., that it also time wasted, and places you’ll miss out on seeing. Make sure if you have a travel buddy it’s someone you would want to be around 24/7. If they aren’t…go solo.

17. Getting So Drunk You Don’t Remember What You Even Saw

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
They don’t call it the ‘Hangover’ hotel for nothing (Bangkok)

I’ll admit…I’ve woken up on a plane from Barcelona to Florida, wearing all of my souvenirs from a 36-day Euro-trip, and quite startled and confused. Absinthe seemed like a great idea to try on the last night of our trip…but it wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong…there’s a good chance I’ll drink a lot of wine wherever I am, and you should too…just don’t get to the point where you don’t even remember seeing the Eiffel Tower light up at night, or are too hungover to go on a river tour of Amsterdam because you’re so nauseous.

18. Doing Other Naughty Things

18 Travel Mistakes You Do NOT Want To Make
Naughty penis cave! Naughty!

As with any normal young adult, you’ll probably be tempted by a sexy foreign person who you’re positive you’re in love with. But that person could potentially be an organ harvester, sex trafficker, or worse…a puppy abuser……or they could be a Turkish heir, South African safari guide, or Australian pro-surfer….ya never know…so always be sure to Google/Facebook stalk them before agreeing on any excursions. And obviously practice other types of subliminal safety as well.

Pssst!

  • I've been waiting 2 years for this adventure in Pakistan, so after an 18 hour journey to get here, I hit the ground running!

Sundays are mellow and a lot less crowded, so I got a relatively chill stroll through the Kotwali Wala Bazar, where I stopped for chai, bought too many pairs of shoes and bangles, and a free hand stamp henna!

Then it was off to the famous Haveli rooftop restaurant in a former mansion overlooking the mosque and other religious sites, followed by another chai, a stop at the pharmacy in the dodgier area (picked up a cold in between trips), and finally back to a 5 star hotel i found for just $65 per night!

Absolutely loving it so far, and I'm so grateful for my hosts who have been so patient with my constant travel changes and made up itineraries! Cannot wait to come back here with a group already, and i haven't even gotten to the mountains yet!!!

I'm going to attempt daily posts, so please be sure to follow along if you're interested in seeing more!

Also yes, so far I feel safe here as a solo female travelers, but let's see how it is on a crowded weekday and after that lovely little mountain flight to Skardu!

Anyone have Pakistan on their bucketlist??
  • Postcards from solo travels in Lahore, Pakistan 💖

It's only day 2 and I'm already enchanted! This is the kind of destination that explorers and curious-minds fall in love with!

Many people have asked if I feel scared or tell me to be careful, and I truly appreciate the concern! I probably wouldnt have traveled here alone if i didnt have 12 years of solo travel experience, and maybe that's why the universe led me here now, but it has felt safe, and I always travel with extreme caution, awareness, and vigilance, and i recommend the same to everyone anywhere you go!

So far I've been treated with kindness and respect, and have gotten a lot of love from all of you proud Pakistanis on here, and I thank you so much for that!

Now about these beautiful places!

I had dejavu in Lahore, recognizing the style of the mosques from those I've seen so many times in India, and then I got a nice history and geography lesson to learn that it's because both countries were all once ruled by the same Moghul empire, which is where this architecture comes from, and why it may remind some of you of the Taj Mahal!

The red structure is the Badshahi Mosque, and the last photo is a sneak peak of the ornate Wazir Khan Mosque!

The photo with the Pakistani family is probably my favorite - they asked me for a photo, so I asked for one as well! Which is your favorite photo?

Also for anyone wondering who is taking the photos, I'm here as part of a campaign with @destinationpakistan, and my guide this day @alpinepakistan was kind enough to be a human tripod!

I'll definitely be adding Pakistan to @mylifesatraveltribe group adventures lineup (follow there for updates about it) but for anyone wanting to go solo, check them out and mention me if you'd like a similar itinerary/style, bc i definitely adjusted mine a lot! 😂

  • Finally beat the budget airlines game!! This is for everyone who has ever gotten excited for a $20 flight in the EU, only to end up paying double for even a carryon!

[Comment “travel” and I’ll DM you the link to my packing tutorial and all of these products!]

For everyone who has tried to layer on as much as possible when they’re weighing bags, and who has had a mini melt down when they ask to place your bag in the measuring bin!

I present to you, my top travel packing hacks as a full time travel professional:

1. Travel compression bags (now with portable pump)
2. Foldable toiletry bag with bare minimum necessities
3. Bags that sneakily expand
4. Convertible shoes

This is all I packed for a 6 day trip to Venice, Mallorca, and a black tie wedding in Alicante!

And if I can do it, so can you, becaaauussee

I’m a former live-out-of-giant-suitcase gal from my decade as a nomad, but now with a home base in Italy (and Mexico), I’ve adapted to “bring as little as possible since you go back home”, both for convenience and to avoid thousands of dollars in baggage fees each year!

Do you think you could manage with a personal item only?? Are you a checked bag person or carry on only?
  • T-minus 2 weeks till I return to the ‘Stan’s of Central Asia, but instead of solo, this time with 16 brave adventurous souls from our Travel Tribe Group Adventures Community!

After exploring and navigating logistics alone, I’ve put together a custom, logistically-chaotic, yet adventure packed, luxe-comfort route and itinerary that has probably been one of the most difficult to coordinate for a group! 😁😂

  • Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it:

(But first! Comment “TRAVEL” and I’ll send you links to my tips for making money while traveling, how to play flight roulette, and also this Balkans roadtrip itinerary!)

14 years ago - I started my blog but it didn’t make much money for a couple years. I used my only money and a credit card to take my first trip.

I was one of the first people to pitch the concept of “free trips in exchange for social media posts” and I sent hundreds of them, always landing at least one, but there was still so much to see!

With the money I earned from my blog, paid posts, and my writing for other platforms, I’d go travel but I’d play what I called “flight roulette”, where I pick “anywhere” as the destination, and choose the cheapest flight to somewhere I hadn’t been yet!

As my business grew, I needed to repeat many countries each time year, and now I still travel to an average of 25 countries per year as a traveler-by-trade (influencer/entrepreneur), with the goal of 5-10 new ones each year.

I never thought I’d reach all 197 countries…but now that there’s only 47 left…do I attempt it?!?!

You can see all the countries I’ve been to and written about on my blog using the clickable map on the home page of mylifesamovie.com, or the menu that’s categorized by destination!

As for making money to travel - I have a lot of posts on that and also a course, which teaches techniques for everyone, not just those wanting to be a creator!

And for anyone who DOES want to be a creator or group trip host — my biggest advice is to find a niche personal to you, find your specific audience who can relate, and don’t just copy other people’s techniques, create new ones and stand out! Originality is admirable!! 😁

Thank you everyone who has stayed on this looonnggg journey with me! I can’t

  • The only reasons you should NOT get an eSIM are if you enjoy searching for wifi, paying more for roaming, or you really want to disconnect 😜

But if you want to make your trip easier, just download an app like @alosim_app and get an affordable data plan, install it in seconds, and then it'll activate as soon as you arrive!

No sketchy airport wifi required.

Comment "esim" and I'll send you my step by step guide for how to use one, and you can also use TRAVELMOVIE for an extra discount!

Note: your phone must be unlocked to use an eSIM!

Postcards from solo travels in Lahore, Pakistan 💖 It's only day 2 and I'm already enchanted! This is the kind of destination that explorers and curious-minds fall in love with! I've been waiting 2 years for this adventure in Pakistan, so after an 18 hour journey to get here, I hit the ground running! Absolutely loving it so far, and I'm so grateful for my hosts @destinationpakistan who have been so patient with my constant travel changes and made up itineraries! Cannot wait to come back here with a group already, and i haven't even gotten to the mountains yet!!! I'm going to attempt daily posts, so please be sure to follow along if you're interested in seeing more! Also yes, so far I feel safe here as a solo female travelers, but let's see how it is on a crowded Monday and after that lovely little mountain flight on Tuesday! Anyone have Pakistan on their bucketlist??

Finally beat the budget airlines game!! This is for everyone who has ever gotten excited for a $20 flight in the EU, only to end up paying double for even a carryon! [Comment “travel” and I’ll DM you the link to my packing tutorial and all of these products!] For everyone who has tried to layer on as much as possible when they’re weighing bags, and who has had a mini melt down when they ask to place your bag in the measuring bin! I present to you, my top travel packing hacks as a full time travel professional: 1. Travel compression bags (now with portable pump) 2. Foldable toiletry bag with bare minimum necessities 3. Bags that sneakily expand 4. Convertible shoes This is all I packed for a 6 day trip to Venice, Mallorca, and a black tie wedding in Alicante! And if I can do it, so can you, becaaauussee I’m a former live-out-of-giant-suitcase gal from my decade as a nomad, but now with a home base in Italy (and Mexico), I’ve adapted to “bring as little as possible since you go back home”, both for convenience and to avoid thousands of dollars in baggage fees each year! Do you think you could manage with a personal item only?? Are you a checked bag person or carry on only?

T-minus 2 weeks till I return to the ‘Stan’s of Central Asia, but instead of solo, this time with 16 brave adventurous souls from our Travel Tribe Group Adventures Community!

After exploring and navigating logistics alone, I’ve put together a custom, logistically-chaotic, yet adventure packed, luxe-comfort route and itinerary that has probably been one of the most difficult to coordinate for a group! 😁😂

Manifesting a smooth and safe journey for us all! Including my little pre-adventure in the mountains of Pakistan, and hopefully a quick trip to Azerbaijan beforehand!

Our 2027 Fall Stan’s trip is sold out with waitlist available and we are working on adding another trip in the Spring! Be sure to follow @mylifesatraveltribe and fill out the form on the bio to get notified!

Anyone wanna come??

The only times you don’t need an eSIM while traveling are when you literally cannot be holding a phone 😂 For all other times, easily download an eSIM like AloSIM which are really affordable at just a few dollars per day or less versus the typical $10 for international roaming! Use “TRAVELMOVIE15” for an extra 15% off! How do you stay connected abroad?

Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it: (But first! Comment “TRAVEL” and I’ll send you links to my tips for making money while traveling, how to play flight roulette, and also this Balkans roadtrip itinerary!) 14 years ago - I started my blog but it didn’t make much money for a couple years. 😁 Thank you everyone who has stayed on this looonnggg journey with me! I can’t

Haters gunna hate, trolls gunna troll, and adventurers gunna adventure. Don’t hate the influencer, hate the fact that there’s a lot of people who like to do similar things as them. 😂 If adrenaline activities in rare, far, unique destinations is also your passion, comment “Tribe” and I’ll send you our line up for 2027/28 and how to get first dibs notifications! Also, this is why we require liability waivers on our group trips 🤪😬 however this activity was very well coordinated, had 4 professional guides and safety guards, and is a well-known activity in Victoria Falls! Follow @mylifesatravelmovie (one of the world’s most experienced solo female travelers) for extreme adventures and unique experiences in over 150 countries, and @mylifesatraveltribe to join on one of the adventures!

The only reasons you should NOT get an eSIM are if you enjoy searching for wifi, paying more for roaming, or you really want to disconnect 😜 But if you want to make your trip easier, just download an app like @alosim_app and get an affordable data plan, install it in seconds, and then it'll activate as soon as you arrive! No sketchy airport wifi required. Comment "esim" and I'll send you my step by step guide for how to use one, and you can also use TRAVELMOVIE for an extra discount! Note: your phone must be unlocked to use an eSIM!
