Europe is one of the most popular romantic destinations for couples looking to getaway together. The most romantic European city that couples go to is Paris, which is dubbed the ‘City Of Love’. But Paris is not the only romantic city in Europe, as many people think!
There’s Berlin, Budapest, Dublin, Istra, Santorini, Vienna, Amsterdam, just to name a few less considered romantic cities in Europe!
In this post, I will focus on Amsterdam and show you the most romantic things to do in this capital city of the Netherlands.

Why You Should Travel To Amsterdam For A Romantic Getaway?
- Amsterdam is easily accessible from most Europe cities. By using the train, plane or road you can be in Amsterdam from Paris, London or other Europe cities in a few hours. Given its good location, Amsterdam is perfect for couples who want to explore several romantic cities in Europe. You can get to them faster from this metropolis, but to do this ensure you comply with ETIAS travel requirements.
- Amsterdam respects and loves people regardless of their sexual orientation. That’s why members of the LGBTQ community love this city. If you travel to the Dutch capital you can enjoy yourself and not worry about being bothered. You may not be able to do this in other cities where LGBTQ are still unfortunately marginalized.
- Amsterdam has many romantic things to do from taking romantic walks along the city’s canals, having romantic moments in the lush green parks, etc. I will get into more details about things to do in Amsterdam in the next section.
- Paris is always packed with couples from around the world. These huge crowds can be a bother when you want to spend some quality time with your loved one. You could, for example, not be able to get reservations at a top restaurant you hoped to enjoy a candlelit dinner with your love because of too many people. Don’t get me wrong, there also may tourists in Amsterdam but numbers are not as bad as those in Paris.
Romantic Activities to Do In Amsterdam
Take Walks along Amsterdam Canals
Amsterdam has 165 canals. You and your partner can take romantic walks along these canals, preferably in the evening as the sun sets. If you don’t enjoy walking, you can cycle instead!
Cycling is big in Amsterdam and is the preferred mode of transport to get around for most residents. The city has cycling paths which you can use to ensure you are safe as you cycle. To make this activity more fun, instead of each of you getting their own bicycle you can pay for a tandem bike and cycle together!
Visit Amsterdam Art Museums and Galleries
There is something magical about admiring art with your better half. And, in Amsterdam, there are many art museums you can tour to marvel at paintings done by world-renowned artist together. Museums you can visit include:
- Van Gogh Museum. The famous painter Vincent Van Gogh lived in Amsterdam and they have a museum which displays some of his best paintings like The Starry Night. You can visit this museum in the afternoon and once done admiring the artwork you can enjoy a cocktail at their open bar.
- Rijksmuseum. This Museum was built in 1800. It is Amsterdam’s most visited Museum which showcases paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, etc. If you don’t want to find huge crowds at the museum plan to visit early in the morning.
- FOAM Museum. If paintings don’t excite you try this museum which displays photography, videography, and multimedia works. You’ll love the amazing visual arts here.
- Erotic Museum. Amsterdam is famous for its red light district, it is therefore not surprising that a city where prostitution is legal has an erotic Museum. As a couple, if you’re looking to spice up your sex life, think 50 Shades of Grey, a visit to this museum will be interesting.
Become Foodies Together
One of the pleasures of traveling is that you get to taste different types of meals from what you’re used to. When you get to Amsterdam, you can sample the local cuisine together and find out if you like it. To taste Dutch foods you can go to the Amsterdam food markets or dine at fine restaurants around town.
I recommend you try the pickled herring which the Dutch say will help lower your cholesterol! Also, try the bitterballen. These are meatballs which are deep fried with bread crumbs. The crunchy snack goes down well with a Dutch beer.
Also after a day of sightseeing, you can go to a café and enjoy some Dutch pastries with a cup of tea or coffee. As you enjoy the pastries you can have intimate conversations and recap your day’s adventures around Amsterdam. Visit a family-owned coffee shop because these are more relaxed, affordable and the owners are very welcoming!
Enjoy a Picnic at One of Amsterdam’s Parks
The city has many parks you can go to for a stroll, people watch, exercise or do other fun activities. The largest of the parks is Vondelpark. This park is covered in trees, flowers and has several ponds which makes it a nice picnic site.
You and your love can buy some cheeses, snacks and a bottle of wine and head over to Vondelpark for some quality time outdoors. The park has an open-air theater and if you are lucky you may catch a free concert! Something that may also interest you at the park is a statue built by world-famous artist Pablo Picasso.
Dance the Night Away
Amsterdam’s nightlife is lit with well-established clubs that cater for every music taste. A night out dancing can help you bond as you party the night away and create amazing memories. If you’re really good at moving your feet, be part of the many dance festivals in the city. You can register for a dance competition at the festivals and work together to ensure you win!
Visit the Flower Gardens at Keukenhof
Ladies (and some men!) love flowers and what better way is there to get her some than at the world’s most famous tulip gardens. Here you will find large fields covered in tulips that look like an Instagram-dream! They are not only beautiful to look at but they also smell beyond delicious! At the flower gardens you also get the chance to handpick your own bouquet to take back home, how cute would that be to do with your partner?

Looks like a TON of fun! But miss you being in the photos. 🙂
I’m an old man, but have heard of the tulips for a few decades, and would love to walk them on a sunny afternoon. Maybe tripping on something fresh and delightful from the area. LOL
The Sex Museum? I’ve definitely heard tales of Amsterdam’s sex scene since I was a teenager in the 70’s and have never made it there. Might be fun for my wife and I, but more a grin about our lives now more than anything! 😉
But maybe not…
