8 Tips for Posting Better Instagram Travel Pics

I don’t mean to brag…but I saw a DRASTIC increase in attention from my Instagram pics after I learned how to actually take good pictures. Instagram is an art, and I don’t care how weird I sound saying that. Unless you want to get scrolled right over, you need to create compelling content, just like you would for your blog posts, business proposals, and emails convincing someone to hire or not fire you.

Think of each photo as a storyboard process. You start with an idea, figure out how to make it come to life, then execute it in a way that will attract the most attention. Here’s a few tips for accomplishing that process:

1. Have an Idea of How You Want it to Look

Get it? I'm "moving mountains" ;)
Get it? I’m “moving mountains” 😉

Sometimes you’ll see something cool, take a photo, and just post it. BUT, you’ll get a better outcome if you already have an idea about what you want the picture to look like, then try a few different angles and strategies, then go through them later to see what works.

For example, I knew I wanted a photo that looked like I was “moving a mountain” at the Grand Canyon, so when I finally found one that would make a good picture, it was easy to angle my camera to get the shot.

Granted, some of the most awesome photos come from un-planned captures, but having an idea will at least help with the creative process.

2. Be Shameless

Did not care one bit that people were staring at me for using a selfie stick.
Did not care one bit that people were staring at me for using a selfie stick.

There have been PLENTY of times where I’ve felt awkward or embarrassed for using a selfie stick, taking a selfie, or doing something crazy like hanging my legs over a cliff, in order to get a good picture. But you know what? I didn’t give a shit, because my pictures turned out awesome and unlike any others like them.

If you have to use something or do something that will likely cause some raised eyebrows…do it anyway. It’ll definitely be worth the shot.

3. Be Unique, But Don’t Make it All About You

Highlight scenery first, and use yourself as a secondary subject
Highlight scenery first, and use yourself as a secondary subject

I also tend to get accused of “always being in my pictures”…..well….yes, no shit I’m always in my pictures, they’re MY pictures, but I don’t get in them because I like to see my own face. In fact, the majority of the pictures I’m actually in, you’ll only see the back of my head, or hat.

I use myself as the secondary subject, with the place I’m at or scenery as the primary one. I do this because I believe that if people wanted to stare at pretty pictures of scenery, they would just look through a National Geographic magazine, or Google images, which all look the same. No other picture is going to have my messy blond-ish hair waving in it, which is what makes my photos unique.

Find a way to incorporate yourself, or something that represents you into your photos, whether it’s a token angle, theme, or subject. Also experiment with different angles, modes, scenes, filters, techniques, etc. etc.

4. Use the Right Equipment

Clearly this photo of me using a camera was taken with another camera...
Clearly this photo of me using a camera was taken with another camera…

Trust me, I get beyond flattered when people ask me what type of DSLR camera I used to take the photo that I actually just took with my iPhone. While I’m typically quite jealous of cool DSLR pictures, I cannot afford a DSLR camera, nor can I afford to waste time trying to figure one out, or lug it around with me when I’m scaling mountains.

But, if you are someone who is mostly focusing on nature photography, you might want to invest in one. If you are more interested in “Instagram photography”, you have some other options. Here’s what I use for certain types of photos:

-iPhone 6

AlyssaRamosMyLifesAMovieAntelope Valley

You can’t deny that the camera on the new iPhone is pretty sick. I’m sure it is on the Samsungs too, I just haven’t ever tried one so I can’t give my opinion. Anyway, I usually use my iPhone if I’m having someone else take a photo or if I’m trying to do a quick selfie and don’t have time to get my GoPro out. The pictures are clear, and there are several useful features like the timer, slo-mo, and panoramic option.

– GoPro:

AlyssaRamosMyLifesAMoviegoproantelope

I still use the Hero 3, because I don’t have any complaints about the quality of photos it takes…in fact, it’s pretty much the opposite. I’m still baffled that such a tiny little camera can take such awesome photos, which is why I freaking love it so much! Keep in mind that GoPro’s take panoramic-ish shots, so you’ll want to always shoot them from an angle. GoPro’s can also be used with a waterproof case, and will take some seriously awesome under water shots! It also has wifi-enabled which means you can connect it to your phone, which I also HIGHLY recommend, along with the timer feature.

– Nikon Coolpix:

AlyssaRamosMyLifesAMovienikon

I don’t know how to classify digital cameras so I’m just listing the one I use. When I decided I didn’t really need a DSLR I looked into this digital camera instead which has DSLR-like qualities…but is cheaper and easier to use. I mostly use it for the zoom, or to take naturey pictures that are mostly for my own viewing, but it still works pretty well.

– Bluetooth remotes:

AlyssaRamosMyLIfesAMovieGlamping

Since I usually travel solo, I decided to invest in a bluetooth remote that works with my iPhone and GoPro so I can set it up with a little tripod (it came included if you just search “bluetooth iphone remote with tripod” on Amazon), and take the picture when I’m ready.

– Selfie Sticks:

DCIM103GOPRO

Yes, as annoying and obnoxious as they look, they actually do take really cool pictures. I only use it with my GoPro and only when taking massive panoramas that include the back of my head, but I definitely have not been disappointed. I also use the stick as a mono-pod, and stick it either in the ground or in my purse to use it as a stand when I’m using the timer or Bluetooth options.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Filter

Non-filtered Moon
Non-filtered Moon

Filtered Moon
Filtered Moon

Have you ever seen something insanely awesome in real life, then taken a picture of it only to realize it looks drab or unrecognizable on the camera screen? That’s because it’s hard to capture real life. That’s why we use filters.

I use the app called Snapseed to filter photos, and usually use the HDR filter, then adjust brightness, contrast, structure, and sharpness. You kind of have to play around with it to see what each of the functions do, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be beyond amused and impressed with how much better your pictures look.

It can be tempting…but don’t over-filter to the point that your picture looks like a cartoon. I’m guilty of doing this, so don’t feel bad, but other people will definitely notice and probably call you out as well.

6. Post at the Right Times and Don’t Over-Post

Notice how I instead of posting a third Antelope Island picture in a row, I spaced it out with a few others first
Notice how I instead of posting a third Antelope Island picture in a row, I spaced it out with a few others first

Surely you’ve heard that there are peak times to post a photo on Instagram for maximum exposure. Depending on where your target audience is, you want to post accordingly. Typically the first thing I do when I wake up is post something at 8am PST so that I also get the people on the east coast as they’re going to lunch, and the people over in Europe as they’re getting off work.

Sometimes I’ll post a second photo if I’m super eager to share it and it goes with what I posted earlier, but for the most part, I won’t post more than 3 in a row of the same thing. If I have more to post, I’ll save it and use it a few weeks later for a #TBT or other related hashtag.

7. Make a Short, Interesting Caption, and Don’t Over-Promote

Notice my short, non-salesy blog mention..
Notice my short, non-salesy blog mention..

Again, I’ll admit, sometimes I get a little over-excited and ramble on about a photo I took, and then wonder why the photo doesn’t get as many likes as some of the others. That’s because Instagram is for looking, not reading. You scroll, you look, you double tap, you move on.

Plus I KNOW the majority of people don’t read the captions anyway because they end up commenting asking where the picture was taken. You’re better off saying something short and sweet and tagging the location.

As for promoting your blog or using hashtags, don’t over do it. People don’t like to feel like you’re trying to sell them something. If you have a new blog post and want to promote it on Instagram, post an insanely awesome picture that is related to it, and say something about the article and your blog in the caption, but don’t demand people to “Check out your blog, link in bio” on every photo you post.

I only use a handful of specific hashtags, but if you’re the type of person who likes to tag every possible tag to get you noticed, I’d suggest adding them in a comment instead of the caption, so it’s not obvious you’re trying to get the photo seen.

8. Engage and Pay Attention to What People Like

Notice how I respond to any questions or engaging comments...
Notice how I respond to any questions or engaging comments…

Don’t just post pictures that YOU think look cool. Pay attention to what people are commenting on, and always engage and comment back. Also pay attention to which photos tend to get more “likes” and comments, it’s an easy way to tell which types of photos do better than others!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the most traveled and most experienced solo female travelers in the world! My goal is to inspire you to travel off the typical path and to shatter negative stereotypes about “dangerous” destinations. Follow me for expert tips and inspiration!
  • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out.

First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own!

Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious)

Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts!

In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers!

I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle)

Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..:

I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!

For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio!

  • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North!

For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it!

There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica!

Anyone else have cool tattoos?

  • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂

People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!

Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂
  • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia!

I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this!

This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂

Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).

What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?!

  • Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare?

This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there.

Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”.

Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡

Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater).

Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real!

I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com

  • Anyone else here grow up watching Free Willy and cried every time? Wait till you see Orcas in real life! 🥹

BTW it’s World Orca Day!!! Yay!!! Share this with a friend who also loves Orcas and Free Willy!!

A trip to Mexico to do a Sea Safari where you can potentially see Orcas is likely cheaper than a trip to seaworld to see them in captivity. The choice is yours! (Plz don’t support captivity)

All of the info to do this Sea Safari is on my website mylifesamovie.com — full disclaimer that there are no specific “orca tours” because they are highly unpredictable! And all trips must follow local regulations and rules!

After 12 years of continuous travel to over 140 countries, I have to say that this is one of my top memorable moments!
  • I got off the plane in the wrong country in Africa and almost got left in a small remote town with limited flights 😬

What had happened wasssss…I was flying from Zanzibar (Tanzania) to a country called Burundi but was not aware of a quick stopover, so when we landed, I saw a welcome celebration, assumed I was in Burundi, then got distracted watching the ceremony and didn’t realize my hosts weren’t there…

Luckily, an airport worker came to find me, it wasn’t hard because I was the only foreigner there, but I accidentally made the whole plane wait an extra 20 minutes 🤦‍♀️

Cool experience though! However if I had realized I was in the wrong country, I would have had a panic attack.

How bout you?

One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget!

The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi!

One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide!

Scotland surprised me a lot with its incredible hotel options! Namely, all of the castles! There’s so many of them!!!

An incredibly u
I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Swipe to see each caption for the name and location of these beauties (and some just bizarre!)

I have a full list with links of the hotels here and ones I’ve posted about, linked on my bio! Please use those links if you book these places bc most don’t pay me to give this free publicity so the way I can monetize is using the links, it costs you nothing, and helps me a lot, thanks!! 😁😁😁

The currently viral @shebara resort in Saudi Arabia with UFO looking over-water bungalows! Costs around $2-4k per night and doesn’t include the transfer to get to the island…

Check out my Shebara blog post for full details!

Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while..

You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too.

I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!)

You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too.

I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!)

I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!!

These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy?

Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real! I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com ————————— For anyone new here: Hi! Anyone else here grow up watching Free Willy and cried every time? Wait till you see Orcas in real life! 🥹 BTW it’s World Orca Day!!! Yay!!! Share this with a friend who also loves Orcas and Free Willy!! A trip to Mexico to do a Sea Safari where you can potentially see Orcas is likely cheaper than a trip to seaworld to see them in captivity. The choice is yours! (Plz don’t support captivity) All of the info to do this Sea Safari is on my website mylifesamovie.com — full disclaimer that there are no specific “orca tours” because they are highly unpredictable! And all trips must follow local regulations and rules! After 12 years of continuous travel to over 140 countries, I have to say that this is one of my top memorable moments!

I got off the plane in the wrong country in Africa and almost got left in a small remote town with limited flights 😬 What had happened wasssss…I was flying from Zanzibar (Tanzania) to a country called Burundi but was not aware of a quick stopover, so when we landed, I saw a welcome celebration, assumed I was in Burundi, then got distracted watching the ceremony and didn’t realize my hosts weren’t there… Luckily, an airport worker came to find me, it wasn’t hard because I was the only foreigner there, but I accidentally made the whole plane wait an extra 20 minutes 🤦‍♀️ Cool experience though! However if I had realized I was in the wrong country, I would have had a panic attack. How bout you? ———————- For anyone new here: Hi!
