20 photos of empty cities during lockdown in 2020

As the coronavirus swept across the world turning our beloved landmarks and cities into eerily barren sites, the photographs people have of their empty cities are haunting to say the least. To see the Times Square or the Duomo in Milan completely devoid of human life is simply chilling.

It sends a shiver down my spine in a way that only these post-apocalyptic vibes could. We’ve all seen some footage here and there that people snapped before lockdown or during their allowed-walks, so we reached out to travel bloggers and friends around the world to collect photos of empty cities during lockdown.

Hopefully you’ve found ways to stay productive while inside but if you’re wondering what the outside world looks like right now… here’s a glimpse!

Barcelona, Spain

This photo and video is from Alyssa, she took it on March 15th, the day she got put in the mandatory confinement lockdown in Barcelona. This was also just ten days after she moved from Los Angeles to Barcelona to become an expat with her boyfriend. They haven’t been allowed outside even for walks (besides to get groceries) for 45 days now, read her updates here.

Milan, Italy

One of the first hardest hit cities in Europe, and one of the first to go into strict lockdown. After almost 50 days, the people will finally be allowed outside for walks.

Cape Town, South Africa

As the words “STAY HOME” tower over empty streets, Cape Town certainly had to be included in our collection of photos of abandoned places during lockdown.

New York, New York

Want to hear some shocking statistics? As one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, Times Square draws about 50 millions each year. In a single day, 333,000 people pass through. But on busy days, over 460,000 walk through the icon landmark. That was of course, before coronavirus. Now this popular attraction is part of the list of empty cities during lockdown in 2020.

“It has been surreal here. The usually bustling streets have been left like a ghost town. I have lived my whole life in Manhattan and could never imagine seeing it like this, it truly feels like we are in an apocalypse. These were shot during a Friday rush hour around 5pm….which if you have been to NYC before, you know is usually gridlocked.” – @the_wandering_woos

Empty Park Avenue

“Roosevelt Island is a very popular spot during cherry blossom season, and Spring in general. This particular strip across the Manhattan skyline is usually packed with people, and finding an empty bench to sit on is usually impossible. This year, all cherry blossom festivities have been cancelled, and you could literally count the amount of people walking by on one hand. ” – @my.bucketlist.journeys

Washington DC

“I took these at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. last Saturday 4/25/2020 around 8am. It is very abnormal to see the National Mall this empty ever, let alone on a sunny Saturday. All the perks of living in a city (restaurants, public transportation, culture) are now irrelevant, but at least we have it all to ourselves!” –@brianablanch

Seattle, Washington

A normally packed I-5 highway was completely empty during lockdown, as was the ever popular Pike Place.

San Francisco, California

“San Francisco during shelter-in-place. The city streets has never been this quiet and eerie as they are now. At the night time, you can even see coyotes walking around in downtown.” – @paulagaston

Mumbai, India

“A city Made of Seven Islands also known as the Financial capital of India , which has never slept after Independence now forced to sleep in Lockdown.” – @ruh_sha_

Mumbai is one of the most densely populated cities on earth, so it’s very strange to have it on the list of empty cities during lockdown in 2020.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Here are some photos from Amagertorv – one of Copenhagen’s most visited squares. It’s the center of the city where two pedestrians streets intersect and it’s lined with shops and cafes, but not at the moment.

Hội An, Vietnam

Streets were empty and stores closed early as locals were afraid to catch the virus from tourists. On a typical day, the streets of Hội An are packed so it’s a harrowing site to walk the empty streets.

Pokhara, Nepal

Muscat, Oman

Muscat is the capital of Oman and the largest city with over 1.72 millions residents. But like everywhere in the world, the city looks bizarrely empty now.

Cagliari, Italy

This city is the capital of the Italian island of Sardinia. With medieval architecture and it’s well-known Castello, the city looks like something from the long forgotten past when

Lisbon, Portugal

The capital city of Portugal is home to half a million people. But as you can see, the residents are taking lockdown seriously as streets and squares sit entirely empty.

Thission in Athens, Greece

This hip, young neighborhood in Athens jams more cafes, bars and nightlife into just a few blocks than some cities do in their entirety. But as coronavirus put the city on lockdown, this hub of activity has fallen silent in Athens.

Prague, the Czech Republic

Prague is home to over 1.3 million people and the city alone receives a whopping 8 million tourist in a single year. These streets are normally alive with the hustle and bustle of city dwellers and tourists alike. But now they sit empty.

“I’ve been living in Prague for almost two years now and seeing all these major tourist sites completely empty is so strange! The good thing is, now that our lockdown is over we’ll be able to enjoy a summer without all the insane crowds. (Astronomical Clock, Old Town Square, Charles Bridge)” –

This is Strada NIcolae Balescu. A wide open pedestrian street sit empty during the pandemic. Typically this street is awash with cafes, tourists, vendors and the bustle of life.

Dublin, Ireland

Like the rest of the world, there is no shortage of photos from around Dublin, Ireland during the lockdown. This street located near the Dublin City Centre remains lifeless.

Ireland ON St. Patrick’s Day

I (Alyssa) received another submission for Northern Ireland that I just had to include…because it’s what it looked like on St. Patrick’s Day! This is one of the empty cities submissions I was shocked to see!

“From the pub lined streets of Galway, to Temple Bar (the busiest pub in Dublin!) and even to the Dark Hedges in Belfast which are always full of tourists, Ireland and Northern Ireland were eerily empty the weekend of St. Patrick’s Day. And Dublin Airport was just as empty the day we flew home!” –@nadyaroundtheworld

Oslo, Norway

The most populated city in Norway, and one of the busiest train stations there, almost completely empty. – @markgerardcox

Ghent, Belgium

“Normally my city is at the moment very crowded with tourist, especially the Sint-Michielsbrug and now I am able to take some nice shots without people in it. Currently doing a staycation in Ghent during my free weekends and it keeps me sane! Hope you can do it soon in Barcelona.” – @msinfinityandbeyond

This post is a collaboration between Alyssa, Emily, and several contributors both bloggers and audience members! If you’d like to add a photo from a major city that’s empty due to lockdown, comment below!

These 20 photos of empty cities around the world from the 2020 lockdown are chilling yet beautiful. Never would we have thought we'd see some of the most popular sites in the world as abandoned places. Check out these once in a lifetime views, which one shocks you most?

  • I've been waiting 2 years for this adventure in Pakistan, so after an 18 hour journey to get here, I hit the ground running!

Sundays are mellow and a lot less crowded, so I got a relatively chill stroll through the Kotwali Wala Bazar, where I stopped for chai, bought too many pairs of shoes and bangles, and a free hand stamp henna!

Then it was off to the famous Haveli rooftop restaurant in a former mansion overlooking the mosque and other religious sites, followed by another chai, a stop at the pharmacy in the dodgier area (picked up a cold in between trips), and finally back to a 5 star hotel i found for just $65 per night!

Absolutely loving it so far, and I'm so grateful for my hosts who have been so patient with my constant travel changes and made up itineraries! Cannot wait to come back here with a group already, and i haven't even gotten to the mountains yet!!!

I'm going to attempt daily posts, so please be sure to follow along if you're interested in seeing more!

Also yes, so far I feel safe here as a solo female travelers, but let's see how it is on a crowded weekday and after that lovely little mountain flight to Skardu!

Anyone have Pakistan on their bucketlist??
  • Postcards from solo travels in Lahore, Pakistan 💖

It's only day 2 and I'm already enchanted! This is the kind of destination that explorers and curious-minds fall in love with!

Many people have asked if I feel scared or tell me to be careful, and I truly appreciate the concern! I probably wouldnt have traveled here alone if i didnt have 12 years of solo travel experience, and maybe that's why the universe led me here now, but it has felt safe, and I always travel with extreme caution, awareness, and vigilance, and i recommend the same to everyone anywhere you go!

So far I've been treated with kindness and respect, and have gotten a lot of love from all of you proud Pakistanis on here, and I thank you so much for that!

Now about these beautiful places!

I had dejavu in Lahore, recognizing the style of the mosques from those I've seen so many times in India, and then I got a nice history and geography lesson to learn that it's because both countries were all once ruled by the same Moghul empire, which is where this architecture comes from, and why it may remind some of you of the Taj Mahal!

The red structure is the Badshahi Mosque, and the last photo is a sneak peak of the ornate Wazir Khan Mosque!

The photo with the Pakistani family is probably my favorite - they asked me for a photo, so I asked for one as well! Which is your favorite photo?

Also for anyone wondering who is taking the photos, I'm here as part of a campaign with @destinationpakistan, and my guide this day @alpinepakistan was kind enough to be a human tripod!

I'll definitely be adding Pakistan to @mylifesatraveltribe group adventures lineup (follow there for updates about it) but for anyone wanting to go solo, check them out and mention me if you'd like a similar itinerary/style, bc i definitely adjusted mine a lot! 😂

  • Finally beat the budget airlines game!! This is for everyone who has ever gotten excited for a $20 flight in the EU, only to end up paying double for even a carryon!

[Comment “travel” and I’ll DM you the link to my packing tutorial and all of these products!]

For everyone who has tried to layer on as much as possible when they’re weighing bags, and who has had a mini melt down when they ask to place your bag in the measuring bin!

I present to you, my top travel packing hacks as a full time travel professional:

1. Travel compression bags (now with portable pump)
2. Foldable toiletry bag with bare minimum necessities
3. Bags that sneakily expand
4. Convertible shoes

This is all I packed for a 6 day trip to Venice, Mallorca, and a black tie wedding in Alicante!

And if I can do it, so can you, becaaauussee

I’m a former live-out-of-giant-suitcase gal from my decade as a nomad, but now with a home base in Italy (and Mexico), I’ve adapted to “bring as little as possible since you go back home”, both for convenience and to avoid thousands of dollars in baggage fees each year!

Do you think you could manage with a personal item only?? Are you a checked bag person or carry on only?
  • T-minus 2 weeks till I return to the ‘Stan’s of Central Asia, but instead of solo, this time with 16 brave adventurous souls from our Travel Tribe Group Adventures Community!

After exploring and navigating logistics alone, I’ve put together a custom, logistically-chaotic, yet adventure packed, luxe-comfort route and itinerary that has probably been one of the most difficult to coordinate for a group! 😁😂

Manifesting a smooth and safe journey for us all! Including my little pre-adventure in the mountains of Pakistan, and hopefully a quick trip to Azerbaijan beforehand!

Our 2027 Fall Stan’s trip is sold out with waitlist available and we are working on adding another trip in the Spring! Be sure to follow @mylifesatraveltribe and fill out the form on the bio to get notified!

Anyone wanna come??

  • Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it:

(But first! Comment “TRAVEL” and I’ll send you links to my tips for making money while traveling, how to play flight roulette, and also this Balkans roadtrip itinerary!)

14 years ago - I started my blog but it didn’t make much money for a couple years. I used my only money and a credit card to take my first trip.

I was one of the first people to pitch the concept of “free trips in exchange for social media posts” and I sent hundreds of them, always landing at least one, but there was still so much to see!

With the money I earned from my blog, paid posts, and my writing for other platforms, I’d go travel but I’d play what I called “flight roulette”, where I pick “anywhere” as the destination, and choose the cheapest flight to somewhere I hadn’t been yet!

As my business grew, I needed to repeat many countries each time year, and now I still travel to an average of 25 countries per year as a traveler-by-trade (influencer/entrepreneur), with the goal of 5-10 new ones each year.

I never thought I’d reach all 197 countries…but now that there’s only 47 left…do I attempt it?!?!

You can see all the countries I’ve been to and written about on my blog using the clickable map on the home page of mylifesamovie.com, or the menu that’s categorized by destination!

As for making money to travel - I have a lot of posts on that and also a course, which teaches techniques for everyone, not just those wanting to be a creator!

And for anyone who DOES want to be a creator or group trip host — my biggest advice is to find a niche personal to you, find your specific audience who can relate, and don’t just copy other people’s techniques, create new ones and stand out! Originality is admirable!! 😁

Thank you everyone who has stayed on this looonnggg journey with me! I can’t

  • The only reasons you should NOT get an eSIM are if you enjoy searching for wifi, paying more for roaming, or you really want to disconnect 😜

But if you want to make your trip easier, just download an app like @alosim_app and get an affordable data plan, install it in seconds, and then it'll activate as soon as you arrive!

No sketchy airport wifi required.

Comment "esim" and I'll send you my step by step guide for how to use one, and you can also use TRAVELMOVIE for an extra discount!

Note: your phone must be unlocked to use an eSIM!

I've been traveling continuously for 12 years across 151 countries so far, and all 7 continents! Thanks for joining the adventure!
Postcards from solo travels in Lahore, Pakistan 💖 It's only day 2 and I'm already enchanted! 😂 ------- For any new friends here -- hi! I've been waiting 2 years for this adventure in Pakistan, so after an 18 hour journey to get here, I hit the ground running! Absolutely loving it so far, and I'm so grateful for my hosts @destinationpakistan who have been so patient with my constant travel changes and made up itineraries! Cannot wait to come back here with a group already, and i haven't even gotten to the mountains yet!!! I'm going to attempt daily posts, so please be sure to follow along if you're interested in seeing more! Also yes, so far I feel safe here as a solo female travelers, but let's see how it is on a crowded Monday and after that lovely little mountain flight on Tuesday! Anyone have Pakistan on their bucketlist??

Finally beat the budget airlines game!! This is for everyone who has ever gotten excited for a $20 flight in the EU, only to end up paying double for even a carryon! [Comment “travel” and I’ll DM you the link to my packing tutorial and all of these products!] For everyone who has tried to layer on as much as possible when they’re weighing bags, and who has had a mini melt down when they ask to place your bag in the measuring bin! I present to you, my top travel packing hacks as a full time travel professional: 1. Travel compression bags (now with portable pump) 2. Foldable toiletry bag with bare minimum necessities 3. Bags that sneakily expand 4. Convertible shoes This is all I packed for a 6 day trip to Venice, Mallorca, and a black tie wedding in Alicante! And if I can do it, so can you, becaaauussee I’m a former live-out-of-giant-suitcase gal from my decade as a nomad, but now with a home base in Italy (and Mexico), I’ve adapted to “bring as little as possible since you go back home”, both for convenience and to avoid thousands of dollars in baggage fees each year! Do you think you could manage with a personal item only?? Are you a checked bag person or carry on only?

T-minus 2 weeks till I return to the ‘Stan’s of Central Asia, but instead of solo, this time with 16 brave adventurous souls from our Travel Tribe Group Adventures Community!

The only times you don’t need an eSIM while traveling are when you literally cannot be holding a phone 😂 For all other times, easily download an eSIM like AloSIM which are really affordable at just a few dollars per day or less versus the typical $10 for international roaming! Use “TRAVELMOVIE15” for an extra 15% off! How do you stay connected abroad?

Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it: (But first! Comment “TRAVEL” and I’ll send you links to my tips for making money while traveling, how to play flight roulette, and also this Balkans roadtrip itinerary!) 14 years ago - I started my blog but it didn’t make much money for a couple years. 😁 Thank you everyone who has stayed on this looonnggg journey with me! I can’t

Haters gunna hate, trolls gunna troll, and adventurers gunna adventure. Don’t hate the influencer, hate the fact that there’s a lot of people who like to do similar things as them. 😂 If adrenaline activities in rare, far, unique destinations is also your passion, comment “Tribe” and I’ll send you our line up for 2027/28 and how to get first dibs notifications! Also, this is why we require liability waivers on our group trips 🤪😬 however this activity was very well coordinated, had 4 professional guides and safety guards, and is a well-known activity in Victoria Falls! Follow @mylifesatravelmovie (one of the world’s most experienced solo female travelers) for extreme adventures and unique experiences in over 150 countries, and @mylifesatraveltribe to join on one of the adventures!

The only reasons you should NOT get an eSIM are if you enjoy searching for wifi, paying more for roaming, or you really want to disconnect 😜 But if you want to make your trip easier, just download an app like @alosim_app and get an affordable data plan, install it in seconds, and then it'll activate as soon as you arrive! No sketchy airport wifi required. Comment "esim" and I'll send you my step by step guide for how to use one, and you can also use TRAVELMOVIE for an extra discount! Note: your phone must be unlocked to use an eSIM!
