When can you travel to spain in 2020

Since I’ve been stuck in Spain during the whole pandemic, and checking for de-escalations every day, I decided to make a post that will keep you updated, especially if you’re wondering when you can travel to Spain or other parts of Europe.

This post is specifically for Spain since that’s where I am and have the most accurate updates, but I will also include other Europe travel updates if I hear about them in the news.

So, today is May 16th, I have been in Barcelona since March 5th, was in solitary home confinement from March 15th – May 2. If you’d like to read my full story and updates from Being an American Stuck in Spain During Lockdown, please click the highlighted link! Otherwise updates are below:

March 14th – May 2th: Strict Mandatory Home Confinement

For 47 days, we were not allowed outside for any reason other than walking to the grocery store or pharmacy. People with dogs could walk them, but not even kids were allowed outside.

May 2: Enter into Phase 0

Finally we are granted a few hours outside for exercise, but within certain time frames. They are:

Ages 14-70: Between 6-10am and 8-11pm

Ages 70+: Between 10am-12pm and 7-8pm

Ages 14 and Under: Between 12-7pm with ONE adult or guardian and for ONE hour only

Other rules During Spain’s Phase 0:

  • Walking is allowed less than 1km from your home and with ONE other person from your household
  • Running, biking, or other exercise can be done farther than 1km but ALONE
  • Masks are only required on public transport or confined spaces
  • You CANNOT leave your province (so we can’t leave Barcelona)
  • Restaurants can open for takeaway only

Also this week, the State of the Alarm Extended to May 24th. This means the government can enforce stay at home rules longer.

May 16th: Phase 0 Extended, Travel Ban Pushed Back, Beaches Open for Exercise, Protests Start

Half of Spain has been allowed to go into Phase 1 but Madrid and Catalonia have not. We must remain in Phase 0 for another week.

The civil guard issued a statement warning that civil unrest is likely to start soon if the governments keep extending the State of Alarm and strict stay at home measures. The “1%” (richest people in Spain) are the first to do a protest outside of allowed time-slots.

International travel ban is pushed back to June 15th. This comes after initial news that it was allowed, but along with a mandatory 14 day quarantine upon arrival.

NEXT PHASES:

TODAY May 25th: Phase 1

Today we entered into Phase 1, which gives us a little more freedom, but we still have the time tables for when we can go out. We got up early to go to Park Guell, and as the de-escalation plan said, we saw cafes and even bars with street seating open! I’ve never seen so many people drinking a beer for breakfast at 9am!

Phase 1 in Spain Allows:

  • Restaurants, cafes, and bars to open their terraces or sidewalk seating at half capacity. All the ones I’ve seen so far though have been full.
  • We are unclear of an un-publicized rule that if you are going to eat, have coffee, or a drink somewhere, you can go outside of your time table, but that seems to be the case.
  • Meetings with up to 10 people whether in your home or in public. So we will be having dinner parties finally!
  • Beaches are open for exercise but only during your allowed time table. You technically aren’t allowed to sun bathe or swim for leisure
  • Most small businesses can open but at 30% capacity.
  • Hotels can open but with strict hygiene measures, but their public areas like buffets or terraces must remain closed.
  • Masks must be worn if a distance of 2 meters (6 feet) cannot be maintained. Only about half the people I see are wearing them.
  • You may travel to a second home within your province.

Phase 2: Entered June 8

Main highlights:

  • NO MORE TIME TABLES! Freedom to be outside at any time besides for people over 70. Elderly have specific time slots from 10am-12pm and 7-8pm and it’s recommended if you’re under 70 not to go outside during then (but you can if you’re going somewhere).
  • Freedom to travel within the province (so we still can’t leave Barcelona)
  • Restaurants can open their terraces at 50% capacity and inside at 30%
  • You can meet with groups up to 15
  • Beaches are open!
  • Shops are allowed to open but many aren’t
  • Many people have returned to work which means the streets and beaches are mostly empty during the day during the week

Phase 3: International travel opens, State of Alarm is lifted.

  • I've been waiting 2 years for this adventure in Pakistan, so after an 18 hour journey to get here, I hit the ground running! Sundays are mellow and a lot less crowded, so I got a relatively chill stroll through the Kotwali Wala Bazar, where I stopped for chai, bought too many pairs of shoes and bangles, and a free hand stamp henna! Then it was off to the famous Haveli rooftop restaurant in a former mansion overlooking the mosque and other religious sites, followed by another chai, a stop at the pharmacy in the dodgier area (picked up a cold in between trips), and finally back to a 5 star hotel i found for just $65 per night! Absolutely loving it so far, and I'm so grateful for my hosts @destinationpakistan who have been so patient with my constant travel changes and made up itineraries! Cannot wait to come back here with a group already, and i haven't even gotten to the mountains yet!!! I'm going to attempt daily posts, so please be sure to follow along if you're interested in seeing more! Also yes, so far I feel safe here as a solo female travelers, but let's see how it is on a crowded Monday and after that lovely little mountain flight on Tuesday! Anyone have Pakistan on their bucketlist??
  • Finally beat the budget airlines game!! This is for everyone who has ever gotten excited for a $20 flight in the EU, only to end up paying double for even a carryon! [Comment “travel” and I’ll DM you the link to my packing tutorial and all of these products!] For everyone who has tried to layer on as much as possible when they’re weighing bags, and who has had a mini melt down when they ask to place your bag in the measuring bin! I present to you, my top travel packing hacks as a full time travel professional: 1. Travel compression bags (now with portable pump) 2. Foldable toiletry bag with bare minimum necessities 3. Bags that sneakily expand 4. Convertible shoes This is all I packed for a 6 day trip to Venice, Mallorca, and a black tie wedding in Alicante! And if I can do it, so can you, becaaauussee I’m a former live-out-of-giant-suitcase gal from my decade as a nomad, but now with a home base in Italy (and Mexico), I’ve adapted to “bring as little as possible since you go back home”, both for convenience and to avoid thousands of dollars in baggage fees each year! Do you think you could manage with a personal item only?? Are you a checked bag person or carry on only?

  • The only times you don’t need an eSIM while traveling are when you literally cannot be holding a phone 😂 For all other times, easily download an eSIM like AloSIM which are really affordable at just a few dollars per day or less versus the typical $10 for international roaming!   • Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it: (But first! Comment “TRAVEL” and I’ll send you links to my tips for making money while traveling, how to play flight roulette, and also this Balkans roadtrip itinerary!) 14 years ago - I started my blog but it didn’t make much money for a couple years. I used my only money and a credit card to take my first trip. I was one of the first people to pitch the concept of “free trips in exchange for social media posts” and I sent hundreds of them, always landing at least one, but there was still so much to see! With the money I earned from my blog, paid posts, and my writing for other platforms, I’d go travel but I’d play what I called “flight roulette”, where I pick “anywhere” as the destination, and choose the cheapest flight to somewhere I hadn’t been yet! As my business grew, I needed to repeat many countries each time year, and now I still travel to an average of 25 countries per year as a traveler-by-trade (influencer/entrepreneur), with the goal of 5-10 new ones each year. I never thought I’d reach all 197 countries…but now that there’s only 47 left…do I attempt it?!?! As for making money to travel - I have a lot of posts on that and also a course, which teaches techniques for everyone, not just those wanting to be a creator!   • Traveled solo in China earlier this year and became slightly obsessed! Out of the now 150 countries I’ve been to, I think it might actually be in my top 10! That’s why I had to add it to our group trips! We are officially 1 year away from our Zhangjiajie - Chongqing - Beijing/Shanghai group adventure with just a few spots left! ***Comment “China” and I’ll send you the trip info, and also an option to see my general blog post about it with tips (but PLZ don’t copy it for business purposes 🙏) If you’re on my level of adventure-obsessed, this is definitely the trip for you! Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it: (But first! Comment “TRAVEL” and I’ll send you links to my tips for making money while traveling, how to play flight roulette, and also this Balkans roadtrip itinerary!) 14 years ago - I started my blog but it didn’t make much money for a couple years. I used my only money and a credit card to take my first trip. I was one of the first people to pitch the concept of “free trips in exchange for social media posts” and I sent hundreds of them, always landing at least one, but there was still so much to see! With the money I earned from my blog, paid posts, and my writing for other platforms, I’d go travel but I’d play what I called “flight roulette”, where I pick “anywhere” as the destination, and choose the cheapest flight to somewhere I hadn’t been yet! As my business grew, I needed to repeat many countries each time year, and now I still travel to an average of 25 countries per year as a traveler-by-trade (influencer/entrepreneur), with the goal of 5-10 new ones each year. I never thought I’d reach all 197 countries…but now that there’s only 47 left…do I attempt it?!?! You can see all the countries I’ve been to and written about on my blog using the clickable map on the home page of mylifesamovie.com, or the menu that’s categorized by destination! As for making money to travel - I have a lot of posts on that and also a course, which teaches techniques for everyone, not just those wanting to be a creator! And for anyone who DOES want to be a creator or group trip host — my biggest advice is to find a niche personal to you, find your specific audience who can relate, and don’t just copy other people’s techniques, create new ones and stand out!
