What are NFTs & How You Can Travel More By Owning Them

If you’re wondering “What are NFTs”, and why I’m talking about them on my travel blog, keep reading. Because although NFTs are digital assets, some include real-life assets as well, like Lucky Ape NFT’s which offer access to boutique properties around the world with your token!

Think of it like a membership card; you buy the card, and it includes certain perks and features, right? Well with Lucky Apt NFT’s, you buy the piece of digital art, and that acts as your “membership card”, which gives you access to stays at their partner hotels, plus a whole lot more!

But I’ll get to the exact details of Lucky Ape NFT’s in a sec. First, let me explain in the easiest what possible, exactly what are NFT’s, and how to buy them!

What are NFTs?

Any website or Google search will easily tell you that NFT meaning is “non fungible token”. So what in the world does that even mean? Let’s start with the word “fungible”. The definition of fungible is something that can be replaced by another identical item, or mutually interchangeable.

Simply put, NFT’s are non fungible, which means they cannot be replaced, duplicated, or traded for another one. They are each unique, like a rare piece of art, except they are more like rare pieces of digital art. And like regular art, they can eventually be sold for a higher price!

By the way! An NFT doesn’t just have to be art! Maybe you’ve heard of the NBA video clip that sold for millions, or even Tweets that are selling for ridiculous amounts! An NFT can be anything from a photo, to a GIF, and even physical items that use NFT’s as a digital receipt.

Why Is Everyone Talking About NFTs Right Now?

NFT’s have actually been around since 2014! But they suddenly boomed with popularity in 2021, when NFT’s started selling for millions of dollars, and celebrities jumped onboard with the “rare digital art trend”.

Now, investors, fans, or even just rare collectible lovers are buying NFT’s simply either as just a hobby, or in the hopes that the value will increase, and they can profit from them in the future.

What is the Point of Just Having Digital Art?

This is a question that I initially had about NFT’s, and why I didn’t jump on the band wagon sooner. To me, if I was going to buy expensive art, I wanted to hang it in my house and show it off!

Except, I don’t have a house. I’m nomadic. So the idea of a digital art collection seemed more appealing to me, but not enough for me to invest a ton of money. Then I started hearing about NFT’s that come with tangible assets (AKA something you get IRL), and this definitely made more sense to me, not just as a collector, but as a creator as well!

Because as a collector, I would be getting my bragging rights for a cool piece of digital art, PLUS I get to do something in real life too, like travel! And as a creator, I could turn my brand and content into my own NFTs as a way to monetize from the audience members who support me! It all sounded great to me!

So in short, the point of just having digital art, is either because you enjoy collecting rare items, because you enjoy the perks that some NFTs like Lucky Ape come with, because you want to support your favorite creators/celebrities/artists, or because you want to invest with the hopes of gaining more from trading them in the future.

NFTs That Include Travel Perks

If you’re anything like me, the travel perks that come with certain NFTs are what really sold me on these things.

Let’s talk about Lucky Ape Travel Club. This is a collection of 10,000 unique NFTs, which triple as a membership card to parties around the world with other members, access to beautiful boutique properties all over the globe, and also to their metaverse in Sandbox.

So basically, you buy the Lucky Ape NFT and not only do you get your rare piece of art, but you also get a ton of travel opportunities as well!

Some of the destinations where they will have properties for starters are: Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Miami, Sosua, Tulum, Rio, and Bali! They’ll also be adding more as membership grows.

With your Lucky Ape NFT, you will be able to book up to 7 nights at one of those properties, and you can book it for as many periods as you like depending on availability. For example, if you book 7 nights at their Tulum property, and it’s still available for another 7 nights afterwards, you can book it again. And again! And again!

Of course, as the NFTs gain popularity, the reservation blocks will fill up, which is why you should get one early in order to get dibs on some of the first open spots!

How to Buy NFT’s

If you’ve read this far, and are now interested in figuring out how to buy an NFT, read on! It may sound tricky, but trust me, it’s really not.

Step 1: Buy Ethereum or Other Cryptocurrency

If you know nothing about cryptocurrency, don’t worry. It’s basically like using a money exchange for foreign currency, except it’s all online, and you can even use a credit card. Below are the most popular platforms for buying Cryptocurrency:

  • Coinbase: Coinbase is one of the most popular crypto platforms for buying and selling. You can simply set it up from your computer, or download the app, or both! They are also going to be starting to sell NFTs soon directly from their platform, which could be great for lower transaction fees. NOTE! You also need Coinbase Wallet in order to buy NFTs!
  • MetaMask: Metamask is another popular crypto platform, and one that has been a little easier for me to figure out, especially while being abroad without access to my US phone number which Coinbase requires to log in. MetaMask is easy to set up, and you simply purchase the Crypto on the app, then connect MetaMask to your OpenSea account which I’ll get to next.
  • PayPal: If you feel more safe and comfortable using a known money platform, great news! You can now buy Crypto on PayPal!

Important things to note about buying cryptocurrency:

  • Always research and see what others are saying about the crypto you’re going to buy first
  • Keep in mind that it may be best to watch it for a few days or even weeks, and buy it when the value is low, not high
  • Also keep in mind that each of those platforms will charge you a fee for the purchase. Check each one to see which has the best pricing
  • Don’t be discouraged if the value drops. It’s bound to happen, and remember, it also goes up!
  • The main preferred crypto for buying NFTs is “Ethereum” and the current price of it today is 1 ETH = about $2500. You can also use Polygon, Solana, and Polkadot
  • You do not have to buy an entire crypto token. You can buy “a piece of it”. For example, you can buy 0.1 ETH which would be around $250. You should check the prices of the NFT’s you’re interested in to see how much ETH you will need to buy them.
  • You will be given a passcode phrase and it is CRUCIAL to save it, both somewhere physically, like a safe, and in a cloud! Because if you lose it, you will not be able to recover your account and can lose all of your money!
  • Again, as with any investment, financial risk is involved!

Step 2: Buy The NFTs on an NFT Marketplace

Once you have your cryptocurrency, you are now ready to go buy your NFTs on an NFT marketplace! There are a few options, but I personally prefer and recommend OpenSea.

It may seem overwhelming at first because there are SO many NFTs, but it helps if you know the name of the one you’re interested in. For example, “Lucky Ape Travel Club”.

Otherwise you can browse through trending ones on the front page, or the many different categories! Once you find one you really like, you can click on it to read more about its description, and also any assets it may include like those travel perks I was talking about!

Finally, when you’re ready to make your purchase, you can decide to either make an offer, or buy it for the listed price. Once the transaction is complete, you will be sent your personal token code, and that NFT is your rare collectible item to keep! Well, unless you decide to sell it!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?   • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out. First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own! Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious) Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts! In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers! I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle) Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..: I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!   • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North! For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it! There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop!   • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!   • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia! I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this! This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).   • I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!! Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while.. You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too. I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!) I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!! These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy? One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget! The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi! One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide!   • Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare? This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there. Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real! Before the term “influencer” or “content creator” existed, I was one of the original travel bloggers, unknowingly helping pioneer what is now a multibillion dollar Creator Industry. I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand. I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so… Allow me to re-introduce myself. I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media! I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work. Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!) I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going. I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck? D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out. First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own! Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious) Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts! In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers! I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle) Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..: I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see! I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North! For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it! There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica! Anyone else have cool tattoos? ——————- For anyone new here: Hi! This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times! Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂

I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia! I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this! This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it). What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?! —————— For anyone new here: Hi! I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!! Costs around $2-4k per night and doesn’t include the transfer to get to the island… Check out my Shebara blog post for full details! Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while.. You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too. I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!) I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!! These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy? One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget! The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi! One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide! Scotland surprised me a lot with its incredible hotel options! Namely, all of the castles! There’s so many of them!!! An incredibly u

Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare? This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there. Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real!
