Glampacking Through Thailand

by Alyssa Ramos

The one hour flight from Bangkok to Krabi wasn’t bad at all, aside from the fact that Kelli almost missed it because she was buying makeup at the airport since she left hers at JFK. We booked last minute flights on SkyScanner for only $40 and had planned on meeting up with my friend Nina, who lives in Krabi and was supposed to show us around and tell us where to stay. Ironically, I met Nina on my Eurotrip back in 2008 (she happened to have gone to FSU too), and managed to keep in touch via Facebook, which is how I knew she was now was living in Thailand and working as freelancer like me and also as an English teacher.

Nina also is my featured blogger for my Krabi Blogger Guides, and gave me very important tips and insights before I got there…like that the weather is extremely hot and humid so wear light clothing…which I wish I would have listened to when I stepped out of the airport in my jeans and double-layered tanktops. I did however take her advice to not book a hotel in advance so I could wait to see which area I liked best, but as we loaded our “glampacks” (rolling luggage instead of traveler’s backpacks) into the cab, I wondered if that was really such a great idea.

It only took us 30 minutes to get from the airport to the main area of Krabi Town, where the only directions we had to give the driver was the Good Dream 2 backpackers that Nina told us to meet her at since her address is impossible to find. We probably looked ridiculous rolling our luggage into the small cafe of the backpackers but at that point I really did not care. The only way I had been able to connect with Nina was through Facebook chat, but since the wifi of the cafe didn’t work, I ordered us two beers to sit and wait for her the old fashioned way.

When she finally got there, she took us to see her apartment which, I definitely would never have been able to find, that she only pays $300 a month for (??!?!??!). She let me drop off my bag of winter clothes from South Africa, then led us back outside to show us around the tiny town.

Nina’s apartment…you can tell how hot it is by Kelli’s legs which are laying in front of the fan…

“So you’re going to get on one of those things with the blue writing, those are the ‘stop-stops’, they’ll take you down to Ao Nang for cheap then you just hop off when you get there.” She said, pointing to a questionable little mini-bus/truck looking vehicle across the street. I had planned on just getting another cab but Kelli and I shrugged, said goodbye, and headed off to the stop-stop.

It was the most interesting ride of my life. We shared the back of the cramped, open-air bus with about five school kids, all in different colored polo shirts that indicated what grade they were in. They would hop off one by one as the bus stopped at each of their neighborhoods, while a mother with a baby then an elderly woman with a small child hopped on.

Glampacking Through Thailand
There were little kids, a mom with a baby, then us with our obnoxious glampacks…

As we neared the beach, the landscape changed from rural farm areas to lush, exotic jungles and mountains, but then suddenly I realized that I had no idea where we were. There were no street signs or ‘Welcome to Ao Nang’ signs, and I had no idea where we were supposed to be looking for a hotel. I started to panic as I tried to turn on data for my Google maps and nothing loaded, especially since we had been driving along the beach for a few minutes.

“Let’s just get off,” I whispered to Kelli, pulling the string above us that requested a stop. We awkwardly pulled our glampacks through the narrow aisle and jumped off the back of the bus, paying the driver 10 baht each (about 30 cents). We wheeled our glampacks to the sidewalk where we could already see the fun and festive beach street that was filled with restaurants and shops.

Glampacking Through Thailand
Suddenly we went from sketchy to exotic as we neared the beach

“Oh! I think this was one of the places I looked up!” I said, reading the glamorous golden sign for the Princeville Ao Nang Resort and realizing we had happened to randomly hop off at the perfect place. Walking into the tropical, exotic resort made me realize what everyone meant by “things are really cheap in Thailand”. It looked like 5 star resort on a tropical island yet it was only $40 for the night. Oh wait. It was a tropical resort on the beach in Thailand…and still only $40. Although it was cheap, our lack of debit cards and limited amount of cash prompted us to only book one night with the hopes of finding somewhere cheaper the next day to stay the remaining two nights.

Glampacking Through Thailand
The beautiful lobby of Princeville Ao Nang Resort, that was only $40 a night!

After we put our stuff away in our jungle-view room, we headed down to the beach so we could at least see the sunset since we had missed the sunshine. For some reason I’m like the only female in the universe who doesn’t find sunsets that enthralling, but this one may have completely changed my mind.

Where in the hell did all those colors come from?! I wondered as I gazed at the seemingly surreal sight. The sky looked like a fluorescent water painting with only the most delicious shades of pinks, purples, and oranges. To make it even more tantalizing, the entire portrait was mirrored on the smooth, glassy shore of the dark beach. I suppose it would have been nice to have a cute guy to make out with during the sunset, but I didn’t, so at least I had Kelli to take a picture of me attempting to do artsy poses with my GoPro.

The beautiful sunset on Ao Nang beach!

We didn’t have any plans, and like I said before, that’s the best way to do it because it forces you to explore, so we wandered up to the lively street to find a place to eat and drink. After reading a few happy hours signs, we finally settled on the one with the cheapest wine specials (90 baht so around $3 per glass) and cutest sidewalk promoter. The wine tasted like shit, and we didn’t even want to know where they got it from since we knew how expensive wine is everywhere else, but at the end of the day, it was still wine, and didn’t taste as bad after three glasses.

They also had free wifi, which is something you learn to not only appreciate, but require if you want to have any contact back home without spending hundreds of dollars on data roaming. I used Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger the most, and Instagram to upload an occasional pic, however I’d highly recommend not wasting time on social media if you can help it. Why waste time starring at a screen (like the couple who played Candy Crush every night in the booth next to us) when you could be starring at Thailand?

The lively streets of Ao Nang that are filled with bars, restaurants, shops, and street vendors

The view of the restaurant which I ruined with this selfie that I was sending to my friend in Turkey

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you eat a full plate of food before.” Kelli said suddenly after starring at me strangely for a few seconds. But the red curry I ordered with a side of glass noodles to mix in was by far the best thing I had ever eaten in my life. After we got fat and tipsy, we wandered around some more and realized that there were a ton of massage places that offered even cheaper massages than our “expensive” hotel did at a whopping 90 baht ($3) an hour. Needless to say we got three different types of massages before heading back to the hotel.

Glampacking Through Thailand
After back massages, we got foot massages for about $3

We didn’t have much to do back in the hotel room since our “free in-room wifi” didn’t work, but we found high levels of amusement when it suddenly began to tropical storm outside, turning our balcony into an exotic rainforest. We stuck our hands in the warm rain and attempted taking pictures of it, laughing hysterically for no particular reason other than that we were so happy to be in that moment.

“Oh shit. Get back inside!” I gasped, as the first mosquito landed on my arm. We jumped back inside and slammed the door shut. I had taken every precaution not to get Malaria except take the Malaria pills I had been prescribed and advised to take before I got there. I figured dousing myself in mosquito spray was a much better alternative to night terrors and stomach problems, but I wasn’t about to test my theory. Especially when there was a sign plastered to the wall next to all of the doors warning you to keep them shut due to mosquitos.

Glampacking Through Thailand
The jungle was right outside of our balcony, which attracted lots of mosquitos, especially after it rained..

Once again, we started packing all of our stuff up since we would have to store it at reception in the morning before we went on the 4 Island Tour at 7am. Kelli had to pay for mine since I was officially out of cash until I could get to Western Union the next day and wire myself money, but I was lucky to at least have that as a solution.

Glampacking Through Thailand
We got dropped off in front of Princevill Ao Nang resort, which was nice, but we had to find a new hotel in the morning so walked west a few yards and found another, then the last night walked west again around the corner to find the best one yet.

I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand.

I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so…

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media!

I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work.

Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!)

I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going.

Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world.

So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year.

Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips.

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

  • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out.

First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own!

Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious)

Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts!

In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers!

I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle)

Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..:

I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!

For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio!

  • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North!

For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it!

There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica!

Anyone else have cool tattoos?

  • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂

People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!

Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂
  • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia!

I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this!

This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂

Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).

What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?!

  • I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Swipe to see each caption for the name and location of these beauties (and some just bizarre!)

I have a full list with links of the hotels here and ones I’ve posted about, linked on my bio! Please use those links if you book these places bc most don’t pay me to give this free publicity so the way I can monetize is using the links, it costs you nothing, and helps me a lot, thanks!! 😁😁😁

The currently viral @shebara resort in Saudi Arabia with UFO looking over-water bungalows! Costs around $2-4k per night and doesn’t include the transfer to get to the island…

Check out my Shebara blog post for full details!

Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while..

You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too.

I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!)

I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!!

These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy?

One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget!

The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi!

One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide!

Scotland surprised me a lot with its incredible hotel options! Namely, all of the castles! There’s so many of them!!!

  • Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare?

This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there.

Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”.

Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡

Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater).

Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real!

I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com

This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times! Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂

I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it). What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?! —————— For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the very first travel “influencers” and now one of the most traveled and most experienced solo travel women in the world! I’ve been to 146 countries so far over 12 years, and love rare destinations and animals! My goal is to inspire you to travel off the typical path and to shatter negative stereotypes about “dangerous” destinations (and animals). Follow me for expert tips and inspiration!

I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Scotland surprised me a lot with its incredible hotel options! Namely, all of the castles! There’s so many of them!!!

I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real! I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com ————————— For anyone new here: Hi!
