Katana is one of those restaurants that can be recommended without a doubt to newcomer’s, as well as as a go-to answer for the question, “Where do you want to eat?”. Boasting proudly from it’s second floor patio perch, above a double, slightly curving, stone staircase with a fountain at the base in the middle, Katana is hard to miss if you’re driving down Sunset Boulevard in the evening.
Aside from it’s name in prominent Asian calligraphy font mounted above the patio entrance, you’ll know where it is by the sultry flames coming from the many black metal heat lamps scattered around the eccentric patio furniture. Countless celebrities have eaten there, and every time I go, there’s bound to be someone I know, which I will always find sitting at the designated “best table” that they reserve for A-list guests.
This is one place where I have to stare at the menu for extended amounts of time because I can’t decide which menu items I want to get since I usually want all of them. I always have to get Robata, which if you aren’t familiar with it, is traditional cooking on a Bincho Charcoal Grill. You have the option of meat, poultry, fish, and seafood, which are served in chunks on wooden skewers, and served with three dipping sauces; soy mustard, ginger, and ponzu. Just writing about it makes me want to go there for dinner tonight, and there’s a 75% chance I do.
The rest of the menu is comprised of other meat, poultry, and seafood entrees, sushi bar items, sushi rolls, rice bowls, noodles, soups, veggies, and more. Some more of my favorites are the baked crab hand roll (now I’m drooling), and the spicy tuna crispy rice, to start. If it’s your first time going, and you’re overwhelmed by all of the delicious options like I usually am, try Katana’s “Izakaya” Feast which allows the chefs to serve you the highlights from the entire menu for $52 per person (minimum two people).
