Best Photo Spots in Yellowstone National Park

Planning a trip to this glorious National Park and looking for the best photo spots in Yellowstone? Here’s an easy to follow guide with some of the most popular sites, plus tips for how and when to go see them to avoid the crowds!

Keep in mind that Yellowstone National Park is not only one of the most popular places in the U.S., but even  more so right now that domestic travel is preferred for many! That means  you need to book your stays early, and make sure you hade a solid game plan!

First Things First: Where to Stay in and near Yellowstone

One of the really cool things about Yellowstone is that there are several accommodation options INSIDE the park! That’s usually an ideal choice, because then you’re super close, and can be the first one at all of the best photo sites in Yellowstone National Park!

There’s a range of accommodation options, from hotels to cabins, and even camping! There’s also plenty of options outside of the park that are more budget friendly, if that’s what you’re aiming for!

Best Photo Spots in Yellowstone National Park:

Alright so this list is arranged both by my personal opinion of what the best photo spots in Yellowstone National Park are, and which are most popular!

Grand Prismatic Spring

Probably one of the best photo spots in Yellowstone – Grand Prismatic Spring!

This is my personal favorite of the best photo spots in Yellowstone. It reminds me of the same type of hot spring that I saw in New Zealand!

Located in the “Midway Geysir Basin”, the Grand Prismatic Spring is actually the largest hot spring in the U.S.! It measures 370 feet across and 121 feet deep! No, you cannot go swimming in it, as it is extremely HOT!

Wondering what makes the cool rainbow rings around the edge of it? The color actually comes from some fabulously coordinated thermophillic (heat-loving) bacteria that thrive on the rich minerals of the water!

*For the best view and photo of Grand Prismatic Springs, head up to the overview during midday when it’s sunny!

Morning Glory Pool

Morning Glory Pool is like a mini Grand Prismatic Spring!

Similar to the Grand Prismatic Spring, there’s a smaller version called the Morning Glory Pool. It’s a much longer walk, located in the Upper Geysir Basin, but likely worth it as there will probably be much less people there!

For an epic photo, get your selfie stick out, lean over the rail that’s right next to the Morning Glory Pool, and get an epic shot from above!

Fairy Falls

Now onto one of my favorite things to see and photograph; waterfalls! Fairy Falls is Yellowstone’s tallest waterfalls, and you can easily get to it by continuing the hike from the Grand Prismatic Pool overlook hike!

Or you can attemps hiking in the Fairy Falls parking lot and do a 5.4 mile roundtrip hike to it. As with all of the parking lots in Yellowstone, they fill up FAST so you’re better off choosing one and hiking to the other sites!

Photo tip: Set your tripod, photo-helper, or selfie stick as low to the ground as possible in order to get the entire waterfall in the picture!

Old Faithful

Since the main attraction of Old Faithful geyser is when it explodes, and that only happens every 1.5 hours or so, you can expect this site to be very packed at all times. If you want a from row seat, get to the main boardwalk 30 minutes before the next eruption.

For a birdseye view with the potential to crop out all of the crowds, hike up to the viewpoint! It’s a 1.1 mile roundtrip hike, and you will still need to get there a bit early!

My tips for capturing Old Faithful are; use a fast shutter speed on DSLR or Mirrorless cameras, use time lapse on 0.5 seconds on an action camera, use the Live feature on iPhones, or use Slow-Motion on any video!

Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Yellowstone has its own Grand Canyon, and it’s somewhat similar to the OG in Arizona! Well, except there’s more waterfalls involved.

Similar to the official Grand Canyon though, there’s a North and South rim. Both with differing levels of difficulty and things to see!

From the North Rim you can look down over the top of Lower Falls from a viewpoint that’s about a hafl mile walk from the parking lot. There are other viewpoints farther from the falls, but from there the waterfall looks a lot smaller.

On the South Rim you can find the viewpoint for Upper Falls, and also one of the most popular views of Yellowstone; Artist Point. Artist Point overlook  is only a short walk from the parking lot, so perhaps that’s why this photo is so popular as well!

  • I was one of the last foreigners permitted in Virunga National Park in D.R. Congo before it was closed due to many armed and dangerous groups occupying it. That experience was one of the most memorable ones in my life, and part of why I’ll always say DRC is one of my favorite destinations I’ve been to (4 times). But DRC is also one of the most corrupt countries, with some of the most horrific ongoing atrocities committed on the local Congolese people, the environment, and the animals by greedy, heartless humans. Deforestation, illegal mining for minerals used to make your electronics, and destruction (plus human abuse) are a part of why the animals there suffer. Poaching for bushmeat and to steal baby primates to sell as pets is another. If you’ve ever seen a primate, especially chimpanzees, kept as a personal pet or on display, its parents were likely killed so it could be kidnapped. UAE and Gulf countries, Thailand, China, Eastern EU countries, and even people in the USA are all guilty of this. That’s why one of the organizations I’ve become an ambassador for in D.R.Congo is @lwiro_primates . Lwiro Primates take in injured, abandoned, and smuggled primates, and they rehabilitate and care for them, even during a time when their own homeland is a very scary please. So I am kindly asking today on World Giving Day for Apes, to send them a donation, or at least share their story or the info in this post. Anything helps, nothing does not. And if you ever see a chimp as a pet, please ask the owner if they’re aware that its parents were likely killed just for it to be kidnapped and forced to be a pet. 😡 The link to the fundraiser is on Lwiro’s page and I’ll share on my Stories! I’ve brought about 100 travelers to D.R.Congo, and they all can attest to what a beautiful and unique place it is. I pray and dream for the day that we can safely return there and bring tourism back.   • The Photo VS the Moment in Skardu, Pakistan (wait for the videos after the photo) for anyone who thinks getting photos is easy, behold, freezing water, climbing on rocks, and magical geese who apparently want to be featured in the pics.!   • Just confirming that Haveli restaurant has the best rooftop view in Lahore! Make a reservation because it's always busy and ask to sit closest to the mosque! The entire building of Haveli is beautiful and fascinating! A former mansion that's ornately decorated, and located in an area that was formerly infamous for..brothels! Now, largely thanks to tourism demand, this area of Lahore is a lot cleaner and safer than it used to be, and it offers some of the most spectacular sites to see, both from above and below! What would you rate this view from 1 to 10??
  • Made it to Skardu without any flight issues! Flights to and from the mountain region of Pakistan have a pretty high rate of cancellation due to unpredictable weather... And speaking of unpredictable weather, the reports said it would be really cold, but it was warm, so i "had to" go shopping for shalwar kameez as soon as I arrived 😍 Then it was off to the Shangri La Lake for some pink tea before making the drive to Shigar cold desert for a sunset horseback riding session, before settling into a beautiful riverfront boutique resort! Everyone says you have to go to the northern mountains of Pakistan, and now I see why! This place is magical and I only have a few days to explore! PS did you know that this region has the highest number of world's tallest mountain peaks, it has has both deserts and lakes at extremely high altitudes, and also the largest glaciers in the world aside from the polar regions?? The Photo VS the Moment in Skardu, Pakistan (wait for the videos after the photo) for anyone who thinks getting photos is easy, behold, freezing water, climbing on rocks, and magical geese who apparently want to be featured in the pics.! (Comment "Skardu" and ill DM you my full travel guide plus how to get notifications for the group trip next year!) What's the wildest thing you've done for a photo?? Thank you Destination Pakistan for the offer to work together and for helping get this footage so I didn't have to always use my tripod or selfie stick!

Just confirming that Haveli restaurant has the best rooftop view in Lahore! Make a reservation because it's always busy and ask to sit closest to the mosque! The entire building of Haveli is beautiful and fascinating! A former mansion that's ornately decorated, and located in an area that was formerly infamous for..brothels! Now, largely thanks to tourism demand, this area of Lahore is a lot cleaner and safer than it used to be, and it offers some of the most spectacular sites to see, both from above and below! What would you rate this view from 1 to 10??

Made it to Skardu without any flight issues! Flights to and from the mountain region of Pakistan have a pretty high rate of cancellation due to unpredictable weather... And speaking of unpredictable weather, the reports said it would be really cold, but it was warm, so i "had to" go shopping for shalwar kameez as soon as I arrived 😍 Then it was off to the Shangri La Lake for some pink tea before making the drive to Shigar cold desert for a sunset horseback riding session, before settling into a beautiful riverfront boutique resort! Everyone says you have to go to the northern mountains of Pakistan, and now I see why! This place is magical and I only have a few days to explore! PS did you know that this region has the highest number of world's tallest mountain peaks, it has has both deserts and lakes at extremely high altitudes, and also the largest glaciers in the world aside from the polar regions?? More coming soon! Do you want to visit Skardu??
