Planning a trip to this glorious National Park and looking for the best photo spots in Yellowstone? Here’s an easy to follow guide with some of the most popular sites, plus tips for how and when to go see them to avoid the crowds!

Keep in mind that Yellowstone National Park is not only one of the most popular places in the U.S., but even  more so right now that domestic travel is preferred for many! That means  you need to book your stays early, and make sure you hade a solid game plan!

First Things First: Where to Stay in and near Yellowstone

One of the really cool things about Yellowstone is that there are several accommodation options INSIDE the park! That’s usually an ideal choice, because then you’re super close, and can be the first one at all of the best photo sites in Yellowstone National Park!

There’s a range of accommodation options, from hotels to cabins, and even camping! There’s also plenty of options outside of the park that are more budget friendly, if that’s what you’re aiming for!

Alright so this list is arranged both by my personal opinion of what the best photo spots in Yellowstone National Park are, and which are most popular!

Grand Prismatic Spring

Probably one of the best photo spots in Yellowstone – Grand Prismatic Spring!

This is my personal favorite of the best photo spots in Yellowstone. It reminds me of the same type of hot spring that I saw in New Zealand!

Located in the “Midway Geysir Basin”, the Grand Prismatic Spring is actually the largest hot spring in the U.S.! It measures 370 feet across and 121 feet deep! No, you cannot go swimming in it, as it is extremely HOT!

Wondering what makes the cool rainbow rings around the edge of it? The color actually comes from some fabulously coordinated thermophillic (heat-loving) bacteria that thrive on the rich minerals of the water!

*For the best view and photo of Grand Prismatic Springs, head up to the overview during midday when it’s sunny!

Morning Glory Pool

Morning Glory Pool is like a mini Grand Prismatic Spring!

Similar to the Grand Prismatic Spring, there’s a smaller version called the Morning Glory Pool. It’s a much longer walk, located in the Upper Geysir Basin, but likely worth it as there will probably be much less people there!

For an epic photo, get your selfie stick out, lean over the rail that’s right next to the Morning Glory Pool, and get an epic shot from above!

Fairy Falls

Now onto one of my favorite things to see and photograph; waterfalls! Fairy Falls is Yellowstone’s tallest waterfalls, and you can easily get to it by continuing the hike from the Grand Prismatic Pool overlook hike!

Or you can attemps hiking in the Fairy Falls parking lot and do a 5.4 mile roundtrip hike to it. As with all of the parking lots in Yellowstone, they fill up FAST so you’re better off choosing one and hiking to the other sites!

Photo tip: Set your tripod, photo-helper, or selfie stick as low to the ground as possible in order to get the entire waterfall in the picture!

Old Faithful

Since the main attraction of Old Faithful geyser is when it explodes, and that only happens every 1.5 hours or so, you can expect this site to be very packed at all times. If you want a from row seat, get to the main boardwalk 30 minutes before the next eruption.

For a birdseye view with the potential to crop out all of the crowds, hike up to the viewpoint! It’s a 1.1 mile roundtrip hike, and you will still need to get there a bit early!

My tips for capturing Old Faithful are; use a fast shutter speed on DSLR or Mirrorless cameras, use time lapse on 0.5 seconds on an action camera, use the Live feature on iPhones, or use Slow-Motion on any video!

Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Yellowstone has its own Grand Canyon, and it’s somewhat similar to the OG in Arizona! Well, except there’s more waterfalls involved.

Similar to the official Grand Canyon though, there’s a North and South rim. Both with differing levels of difficulty and things to see!

From the North Rim you can look down over the top of Lower Falls from a viewpoint that’s about a hafl mile walk from the parking lot. There are other viewpoints farther from the falls, but from there the waterfall looks a lot smaller.

On the South Rim you can find the viewpoint for Upper Falls, and also one of the most popular views of Yellowstone; Artist Point. Artist Point overlook  is only a short walk from the parking lot, so perhaps that’s why this photo is so popular as well!

  • I've been waiting 2 years for this adventure in Pakistan, so after an 18 hour journey to get here, I hit the ground running! Sundays are mellow and a lot less crowded, so I got a relatively chill stroll through the Kotwali Wala Bazar, where I stopped for chai, bought too many pairs of shoes and bangles, and a free hand stamp henna! Then it was off to the famous Haveli rooftop restaurant in a former mansion overlooking the mosque and other religious sites, followed by another chai, a stop at the pharmacy in the dodgier area (picked up a cold in between trips), and finally back to a 5 star hotel i found for just $65 per night! Absolutely loving it so far, and I'm so grateful for my hosts @destinationpakistan who have been so patient with my constant travel changes and made up itineraries! Cannot wait to come back here with a group already, and i haven't even gotten to the mountains yet!!! I'm going to attempt daily posts, so please be sure to follow along if you're interested in seeing more! Also yes, so far I feel safe here as a solo female travelers, but let's see how it is on a crowded Monday and after that lovely little mountain flight on Tuesday! Anyone have Pakistan on their bucketlist??
  • Finally beat the budget airlines game!! This is for everyone who has ever gotten excited for a $20 flight in the EU, only to end up paying double for even a carryon! [Comment “travel” and I’ll DM you the link to my packing tutorial and all of these products!] For everyone who has tried to layer on as much as possible when they’re weighing bags, and who has had a mini melt down when they ask to place your bag in the measuring bin! I present to you, my top travel packing hacks as a full time travel professional: 1. Travel compression bags (now with portable pump) 2. Foldable toiletry bag with bare minimum necessities 3. Bags that sneakily expand 4. Convertible shoes This is all I packed for a 6 day trip to Venice, Mallorca, and a black tie wedding in Alicante! And if I can do it, so can you, becaaauussee I’m a former live-out-of-giant-suitcase gal from my decade as a nomad, but now with a home base in Italy (and Mexico), I’ve adapted to “bring as little as possible since you go back home”, both for convenience and to avoid thousands of dollars in baggage fees each year!   • The only times you don’t need an eSIM while traveling are when you literally cannot be holding a phone 😂 For all other times, easily download an eSIM like AloSIM which are really affordable at just a few dollars per day or less versus the typical $10 for international roaming!   • Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it: (But first! I used my only money and a credit card to take my first trip. I was one of the first people to pitch the concept of “free trips in exchange for social media posts” and I sent hundreds of them, always landing at least one, but there was still so much to see! With the money I earned from my blog, paid posts, and my writing for other platforms, I’d go travel but I’d play what I called “flight roulette”, where I pick “anywhere” as the destination, and choose the cheapest flight to somewhere I hadn’t been yet! As my business grew, I needed to repeat many countries each time year, and now I still travel to an average of 25 countries per year as a traveler-by-trade (influencer/entrepreneur), with the goal of 5-10 new ones each year. I never thought I’d reach all 197 countries…but now that there’s only 47 left…do I attempt it?!?!   • Traveled solo in China earlier this year and became slightly obsessed! Out of the now 150 countries I’ve been to, I think it might actually be in my top 10! That’s why I had to add it to our group trips! Traveling was not a possibility for me when I was younger, yet now I’ve reached my 150th country (out of the 197 list which includes Kosovo)!! It has taken me 12 years, I’ve done most of them solo, and many have been collaborations that I received or pitched, but anything else, including most flights was solely paid for by myself, and here’s how I did it: (But first! Comment “TRAVEL” and I’ll send you links to my tips for making money while traveling, how to play flight roulette, and also this Balkans roadtrip itinerary!) 14 years ago - I started my blog but it didn’t make much money for a couple years. I used my only money and a credit card to take my first trip. I was one of the first people to pitch the concept of “free trips in exchange for social media posts” and I sent hundreds of them, always landing at least one, but there was still so much to see! With the money I earned from my blog, paid posts, and my writing for other platforms, I’d go travel but I’d play what I called “flight roulette”, where I pick “anywhere” as the destination, and choose the cheapest flight to somewhere I hadn’t been yet! As my business grew, I needed to repeat many countries each time year, and now I still travel to an average of 25 countries per year as a traveler-by-trade (influencer/entrepreneur), with the goal of 5-10 new ones each year. I never thought I’d reach all 197 countries…but now that there’s only 47 left…do I attempt it?!?! You can see all the countries I’ve been to and written about on my blog using the clickable map on the home page of mylifesamovie.com, or the menu that’s categorized by destination! As for making money to travel - I have a lot of posts on that and also a course, which teaches techniques for everyone, not just those wanting to be a creator! And for anyone who DOES want to be a creator or group trip host — my biggest advice is to find a niche personal to you, find your specific audience who can relate, and don’t just copy other people’s techniques, create new ones and stand out!
