Snowboarding (aka Drinking) at Mammoth Mountain, CA

Snowboarding
My first selfie ever and I get called out on it immediately. Sweet.

I have a special way of snowboarding.

By Alyssa Ramos

I have a severely bad habit of thinking I can keep up with boys in several aspects that typically end up being extremely dangerous and painful for my life. Drinking is typically the main one, but last weekend, extreme road trip, sports, AND drinking were the causes. We decided last minute to go up to Mammoth for the weekend, and after hours of arguing about there being no snow, how we would get there, and who was and wasn’t going, we finally traded a Maserati for one of our friends Land Rovers, piled six people and three snowboards in it, and hit the road.

That was bad idea number one. Three guys and three girls who were all intending on drinking the entire way up, and all stubborn about seating arrangements never results in anything good. After re-arranging ourselves in extremely uncomfortable positions in the back seat, and spilling a decent amount of alcohol everywhere, almost running out of gas, and watching every hilarious Youtube video we could find, we finally made it to the Westin in Mammoth around 2am. I think.

The totem pole.

The only person up was a young, spooky looking concierge who I named Samuel, and who everyone believed was named Samuel  and called him Samuel as well. “Samuel, hey buddy, how do we get into the jacuzzi?” Jon asked after picking up a random phone on a random floor that we were all on because we were wandering around like stupid mice in a labyrinth for twenty minutes. Suddenly Samuel appeared and instructed us out the doors I had said we should go out from the beginning…except his instructions revealed that we would have to walk through mulch and trees to get around to the back of the building. Not sketchy at all. Turns out he was right, and we made it for about five seconds before the other security guards kicked us out. Losers.

The next morning we had shots of Fireball and beer for breakfast before heading out in our super cute snow outfits to the mountain…that had four lifts open…that the boys were not happy about. I only go on the bunny slopes so I was perfectly fine with it. So we filled our flasks on the way there, then the boys left us immediately to go on the cool kid slopes because they’re just really sweet like that. Luckily Alicia is a nice friend and went on the bunny slopes a few times with me before also leaving me to go on the hard slopes.

photo 3
Alicia was the only one who would go on the bunny slopes with me

Now when I say “went on the bunny slopes” I should probably emphasize on this special little way of snowboarding that I’ve invented that is the complete wrong way of doing it…I’m permanently scared to go on my toes due to years of wakeboarding, so instead, I use both feet to shred diagonally to the right with one foot, then turn on the other and shred diagonally to the left, accumulating shredded snow on my board until I get to the bottom where I act super cool like I know what I’m doing. Not even joking, there was a group of “Disabled Skiers” that were going down better than me.

While I was waiting for them at the bottom, acting like I was having a super fun time snowboarding, I decided to take maybe the first me-only selfie I’ve every taken to send to my mom…right when I thought I was in the clear, some guy walks by behind me and obnoxiously says, “Selfffiiee!” Ugh. Joke was on him when he found the pic on Instagram and commented “Haha #wasthatguy”. Not sure how I feel about that still.

Of course. I found everyone on the bar patio, smoking before the next run, and somehow got convinced that the intermediate slope wasn’t that bad and that I should just go on it with all of them. Right. That happened in the most opposite way possible. Of course when we got to the top they weren’t waiting for us (not that I expected them to), but what was worse, was that it was the tallest lift and the winds were so strong that I could hardly stand up on my board and was getting blown back UP the slope.

photo 2
This is what happens when a bunch of 2 year old adults hang out.

I was pretty sure I was going to die. Not only do I weight 107lbs but I’m not exactly what you’d call a professional snowboarder like the boys, in any slightest sort of way. Alicia literally had to pull me up with her little ski stick thing, and when I was finally up, she thought she was helping me by stepping on the front toe side of my board to hold me in place (I was facing sideways/forward going downhill) causing me to go flying forward towards the cliff screaming “Noooo!”

photo 4
I think he’s tired.

Twenty minutes later I had finally made it down, cursing and swearing at the boys who in return ignored me and threw snow at me. We retreated to the bar to eat and drink more and catch some of the FSU game, but somehow managed to be complete degenerates and turn the table into what a 2 year old’s high chair table would look like, but with beer and wine instead of milk and juice, and a shot of beer/parmesan cheese/KitKat/anything on the table that Jon took for $300, instead of baby vomit. And that was only the first day.

I guess this is kinda cool…Alex discovered slo mo on his phone and filmed himself doing a cool jump thing.

  • You cannot go within 15 feet of animals in Antarctica. But if THEY come up to you…well…what can you do?? 😬

I’ve been to Antarctica 4 times and this was a rare occasion when a penguin suddenly waddle-ran right up to me! It took a lot of willpower not to try and bend down to get closer, but I knew to just stay still and let it observe until it walked away!

Other animals you can see in Antarctica are humpbacks, leopard seals, and Orcas!

LMK if you have any questions about Antarctica!

  • My therapist said I’m a workaholic with ADHD and to find a hobby where I can’t use my phone or laptop that will also keep me captivated for hours, so behold! My new hobby of shark diving! 🦈💖

Unlike regular diving, snorkeling, or swimming, you must always be highly alert, ready to respond, and on the go if you want to try to keep up with them!

The ultimate workaholic-ADHD-adventurer’s dream hobby, do you agree?

[DISCLAIMER] Yes sharks can be dangerous, but only when provoked or taunted with food. I have extensive experience around sharks and apex predators, and a degree in animal science, all of which I use to promote positive awareness and protection for sharks and other misunderstood animals!

Happy Shark Week!

  • Before the term “influencer” or “content creator” existed, I was one of the original travel bloggers, unknowingly helping pioneer what is now a multibillion dollar Creator Industry.

I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand.

I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so…

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media!

I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work.

Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!)

I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going.

Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world.

So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year.

Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips.

Thank you everyone who has been here with me for so long, and welcome to anyone new!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

  • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out.

First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own!

Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious)

Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts!

In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers!

I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle)

Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..:

I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!

For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio!

  • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North!

For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it!

There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica!

Anyone else have cool tattoos?

  • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂

People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!

Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂
  • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia!

I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this!

This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂

Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).

What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?!
