10 Tips for Balling on a Budget in Bali

Not going to lie, I always thought Bali was this exotic, romantic, and most of all, expensive place that you go to once in a lifetime for your honeymoon or something. But I was wrong x1000. Actually, x13,350 to be exact. That’s the exchange rate in Indonesian Rupiah for one U.S. dollar, and yes, it will make you feel as rich as it sounds.

Tips For balling on a budget in Bali

You won’t only feel rich from having thousand, hundred thousand, and even one million dollar bills, but also because most things required for living, like food and accommodation, can be insanely cheap in Bali as well! Actually, you could probably even plan your dream Bali honeymoon on a reasonable budget too!

I had no idea how affordable Bali was before I started researching where to stay within my budget, which made everything make sense when I saw how many expats were living there.  Although my budget is a little different since being a travel blogger sometimes allows me to stay at hotels for free, I wanted to still test out budget travel in Bali, which I did through booking places to stay on AirBnB.

Oh, and I like to think I’m an expert on budget travel, but I’d say I’m in the “comfortable-low” budget area, meaning I don’t mind paying a little extra for a nicer place, or giving up on haggling prices because I feel bad. But I happened to be with a “spend-next-to-nothing” budget traveler who had also been to Bali before, and helped a ton with getting the cheapest possible prices.

Overall, I’d definitely say I felt like I was balling on a budget in Bali. Here’s my tips:

1. Don’t Stay in the Super Touristy Areas

10 Tips for Balling on a Budget in Bali
Ubud is an hour north of Seminyak, and way less crowded and congested!

This is probably a “duh” since most people know that touristy areas are always more expensive, but in Bali’s case, it’s so significant that I had to mention it first. You can still get an accommodation for fairly cheap in touristy areas like Kuta and Seminyak, and maybe even eat there without breaking your budget, but if you want to go somewhere and get back to those areas, you’re going to end up spending a ton of money sitting in traffic.

It literally took us an hour to go 9km in Seminyak, and if we would have been in a taxi instead of a free hotel shuttle, it probably would have costed over 200k. So that shittiness plus the given up-prices of accommodations and food won’t be as beneficial to your budget as staying in an area just outside of, or completely away from super touristy areas.

2. Get a Day Pass Instead of a Room at Expensive Hotels

10 Tips for Balling on a Budget in Bali
You don’t have to sleep at a fancy hotel in order to eat or hang out there! (I did in this pic though, it’s at Tugu Lombok)

If you’re the type of traveler that loves upscale exotic hotels, then Bali is definitely the place for you, but not so much if your’e on a tight budget. Good news though, you don’t have to spend the ridiculous amount of money to sleep at the fancy hotels in order to experience them; you can simply buy a day pass and just hang out instead.

Then you can spend those hundreds of dollars on drinks at the pool instead of a room! Or, maybe save it for another flight somewhere.

3. Use AirBnB, Booking.com, or Ask Around!

10 Tips for Balling on a Budget in Bali
This was my AirBnB rental in Ubud…only $30/night for the whole house!

So as I mentioned, part of being a travel blogger is the perk of being able to work with nice hotels for complimentary stays in exchange for a blog post or Instagram photo. But, I tend to only do those types of collaborations when I’m specifically interested in writing about the hotel, otherwise I’ll just book my own accommodation, which I always tend to do quite well with on a budget.

Bali was one of the places that I specifically wanted to book budget accommodations, because not only did they look awesome, but I really wanted to show how anyone can do Bali on a budget. I found an AMAZING AirBnB rental in Ubud (there were tons of good ones listed) that was only about $30 a night, for an entire one bedroom one epic bathroom house, with it’s own little yard, and balcony that overlooks a rice patty field. I’m not exaggerating about the bathroom either. It had an outdoor shower in a roofless area with giant windows that looked out into the jungle, and a neighboring stone bathtub with a view outside as well.

I also saw a ton of awesome-looking tiki-hut villas in Lombok and Gili Islands on AirBnB for insanely cheap prices, but sometimes if I don’t feel like going through the booing process with a host, I’ll use booking.com or Agoda for last minute deals on hotels.

3. Always Ask if Transfers are Included

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
We had to take a few ferries just to get from Bali to the other islands like Gili Menos and Lombok

If you decide to go the hotel route, make sure you ask if a transfer is included. This is one thing I never think to do, but Tom always did, and it ended up saving us a lot of money since taxis are expensive AF and there’s only about 10 Uber drivers total on the entire island of Bali. Transfers are offered from the airport to the hotel at some hotels, and even if it’s not mentioned on their website, it’s still worth asking about.

We also had transfers included with some of our ferry rides, which was listed as included in the price on the websites like BaliFerry.com that compares the different companies. Our Gingarri ferry had a shuttle pick us up from our AirBnB in Ubud, and when we had to go even further to Canggu on the way back, it was only an additional 50k IDR.

4. Use Uber if You Can, Even Though It’s Frowned Upon

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
One of the only places we could even find an Uber was in Canggu but it was half the price of a taxi…

Disclaimer: I probably shouldn’t be promoting using a big company like Uber in a country where the taxi business plays a huge role in the local economy, especially when it’s publicly frowned upon via massive anti-Uber signs in many areas. BUT, as much as I’d rather support people than a company, it’s not like the Uber drivers aren’t getting paid, plus I don’t exactly have a ton of extra money laying around for taxi fares that are almost double what an Uber would be.

The other downside aside of Uber being frowned upon in Bali, is that it’s so frowned upon that it’s actually not allowed in certain areas, and there’s hardly any in the areas that there is. The good news though is that if you can get an Uber, you’ll save a ton of money, plus have a comfortable, pleasant drive with a friendly driver. Make sure to save their number too because you can even text them for potential rides the next time you need one.

5. If You Must Use a Taxi, Haggle Using Distance

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
Know how far places are, and what a fair price is for a cab there

I’m pretty sure that no one really enjoys taking a taxi. They’re always over-priced, they tend to never be clean, and it always seems like no matter what, the drivers are pissed off and out to overcharge you. One thing that massively sucks about Bali is that the traffic is so bad that the taxi drivers have an upper hand when it comes to over-charging.

They’ll start with a ridiculously high price, which you should obviously try to haggle, and the way that we were able to get the lowest price is when stating the actual distance (often not a very far one), or claiming that the hotel told us how much we should be charged.

6. Rent a Motorbike to Get Around

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
Motorbikes are soooooo cheap to rent, and really fun to ride!

Unless you have luggage to carry, or you’re planning on drinking, I’d highly recommend renting a motorbike to get around Bali over a taxi or an Uber. For the millionth time, there is a shit ton of traffic, which means either way, if you’re in a car or van, you’re going to be stuck. If you have a motorbike you can weave in between the cars, which will get you places twice as fast, and will save you four times as much. Plus they’re insanely fun!

In Ubud the motorbikes were a lot cheaper, probably because the AirBnB host hooked us up with a local rental place for only $4 a day. In Canggu we couldn’t find any rental places, so we ended up renting one through the hotel for around $10 a day.

7. Know How Much Ferries Should Be

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
People WILL try to overcharge you for ferry tickets! Use websites or book AT the ferry terminal!

Your best bet at getting the cheapest price for a ferry to one of the islands from Bali, is by comparing prices and booking the tickets online. You can definitely still get the same price at the ferry terminal, but there’s still companies/people around the terminal that will try to scam you for a higher price that they say is the normal price and non-negotiable.

So here’s a few prices of ferries that we took to islands to and from Bali:

  •  Ubud to Lombok via the Gingarri fast boat (with transfer to the dock): 300,000 IDR per person, one way
  • Lombok to Gili Meno via fast boat: 8.500 IDR per person, one way
  • Gili Meno to Gili Trangawan via private boat to catch the ferry back to Bali: 175k (haggled at a local company initially wanting 250k)

8. Buy Snacks & Drinks from a Food Mart

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
You know what’s expensive? Anything you buy from a hotel.

For some reason I feel like I’m always hungrier than normal when I travel, and that I spend way more money on drinks than I do back home. My solution is always to go to a food mart, whether it’s local or a 7-11, and stock up on snacks and drinks so that you don’t end up paying extra at your hotel or a restaurant.

Alcohol is ALWAYS cheaper to buy a bottle of at a food mart or liquor shop than it is to buy at a bar, hotel, or restaurant. I’m not saying that so you can go get wasted, I’m just saying that it’s really easy to break your budget on buying a couple glasses of wine at dinner, rather than enjoying a few in your room.

9. Eat Local & Away from Touristy Streets

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
Mmmm Local Food

Another way to easily accidentally spend unnecessary amounts of money, is by only eating out at restaurants in Bali. I mentioned before that the touristy areas will definitely increase the menu prices (which honestly aren’t even that bad), but there’s tons of local places all around that sell delicious food for dirt cheap as well.

Some of my favorite cheap dishes in bali were Fried Noodles, Shrimp Curry, and a local dish called Gado Gado, which is a platter of tempe, tofu, and cooked veggies covered in a peanut sauce.

10. Wait to Buy Souvenirs Until the End

10 tips for balling on a budget in bali
Guess how many sarongs I tried to buy during the whole trip? A lot. Guess how many I’ve worn? 2.

An easy way to overspend your money in Bali is by buying every awesome souvenir you see. Trust me, they aren’t going to run out of sarongs or bracelets, so you might as well wait until the end of your trip to buy stuff, so you don’t run out of cash for things you actually need…like food. This will also give you a good idea of how much people charge; the cheapest sarong I bought was only 22k IDK, and many places would try to charge 100k for the same exact one!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

  • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out.

First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own!

Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious)

Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts!

In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers!

I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle)

Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..:

I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!

  • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North!

For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it!

There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica!

Anyone else have cool tattoos?

  • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂

People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!

Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂
  • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia!

I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this!

This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂

Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).

What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?!

  • I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Swipe to see each caption for the name and location of these beauties (and some just bizarre!)

I have a full list with links of the hotels here and ones I’ve posted about, linked on my bio! Please use those links if you book these places bc most don’t pay me to give this free publicity so the way I can monetize is using the links, it costs you nothing, and helps me a lot, thanks!! 😁😁😁

The currently viral @shebara resort in Saudi Arabia with UFO looking over-water bungalows! Costs around $2-4k per night and doesn’t include the transfer to get to the island…

Check out my Shebara blog post for full details!

Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while..

You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too.

I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!)

I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!!

These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy?

One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget!

The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi!

One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide!

Scotland surprised me a lot with its incredible hotel options! Namely, all of the castles! There’s so many of them!!!

  • Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare?

This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there.

Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”.

Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡

Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater).

Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real!

I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com

However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious) Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts! In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers! I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle) Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..: I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see! For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio! ———- Please follow me @mylifesatravelmovie for more extreme adventures with purpose 💖 #alyssaramostravels #mylifeisatravelmovie #mylifeisatravelmovie

I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! ——————- For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the most traveled and most experienced solo female travelers in the world! I’ve been to 146 countries so far over 12 years, and love rare destinations and animals! My goal is to inspire you to travel off the typical path and to shatter negative stereotypes about “dangerous” destinations. Follow me for expert tips and inspiration!

This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times! Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂

I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it). What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?! —————— For anyone new here: Hi! I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

An incredibly u
I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real! I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com ————————— For anyone new here: Hi!
