Finding the cheapest healthcare isn’t easy. In fact, the cost of healthcare is increasing in many countries, and especially in the US, so finding free healthcare countries or even universal health care countries is a hard.

Enter two magical words: travel and tourism. Well, I guess we can also throw in “expat”, and “digital nomad” now as well.

Consistent with the increasing costs of healthcare in the US, medical tourism has also been rising over the past few years. 

Every year millions of people travel to destinations for quality healthcare and medical procedures at a lower rate, and most of the destinations are included in this list of countries with the cheapest healthcare!

It sounds almost too good to be true. But trust us, medical tourism is a legitimate business! 

The fact that you can save some money on the cheapest healthcare plans, get better treatment, and relax in some amazing destinations while you recover is an added bonus.

1. Cheapest Healthcare Countries: Brazil

Brazil is the third most visited country for cosmetic and plastic surgery, after the US and China, and for good reason. Brazil has some of the cheapest healthcare plans anywhere, even free health care for citizens.

Every year, more tourists are traveling to Brazil for cheap healthcare. This is particularly because Brazil offers high-quality procedures at affordable rates. Healthcare in Brazil is considered a constitutional right so if you’re looking for universal health care countries, it’s perfect.

In addition, you’ll be guaranteed quality service and care with 43 hospitals accredited by the JCI. Tourists traveling to Brazil from the US for a medical procedure save around 20% on their healthcare bill.

2. Costa Rica

Costa Rica consistently ranks high in the delivery of dentistry and cosmetic surgery, ahead of the US and Canada. Recently, its reputation for delivery of other surgeries such as eye surgery and gastric banding surgery has been growing. Costa Rica is one of the free healthcare countries for citizens and permanent residents.

Patients in Costa Rica will save quite a bit of money, with the cost of healthcare services between 45% to 65% lower than in the US.

In addition to lower costs, patients will be treated to some incredible Costa Rican hospitality. This includes the positive attitudes that Costa Ricans are known for!

3. Cuba

This Caribbean nation is particularly well-known for its medical services in relation to drug abuse, eye illnesses, post-accident rehab, and plastic surgery.

Prepare to be treated by world-class doctors and nurses, with top quality medical equipment. You will also be spoilt by the amazing Cuban culture, hospitality and the gorgeous scenery (Cuba is well-known for its beautiful beaches).

Medical tourists in Cuba can expect to pay 60% to 80% less for treatments compared to the US, and citizens are treated to free healthcare.

4. India

India is one of the 12 countries with the cheapest healthcare

In India, patients save between 65% to 90% (yes, 90!) on the cost of healthcare as compared to the US, so if you’re looking for some of the cheapest healthcare… India is for you! It’s one of the best universal healthcare countries.

India is one of the most visited countries for healthcare. This is because of the incredible saving in healthcare costs combined with India’s high-quality service and cutting-edge technology.

India also offers a close to zero waiting time for surgeries, which tend to be done right after diagnosis is confirmed. 

As a patient in India, expect your medical trip to be one of quality healthcare combined with luxury.

In fact, some hospitals provide health care packages for foreign patients which include pick-ups from the airport to the hospital, free in-room Wi-Fi, and private chefs.

5. Malaysia

Malaysia is well known for its incredible food, culture, and heritage sites. But did you know that it is also ranked as one of the best providers of healthcare across South-East Asia?

Malaysia has won the International Medical Travel Journal’s award for Health and Medical Tourism Destination of the Year from 2015-2017 and was highly commended for the award in 2018.

Travelers visiting Malaysia will save 65% to 80% on healthcare costs compared to the US and will receive a luxurious experience. 

Hospitals often offer patients rooms that are similar to what you would find at a five-star hotel. The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council also offers lounge and concierge services to medical tourists at both Penang international airport and Kuala Lumpur airport.

6. Mexico

Mexico is the place to go for an amazing cultural experience, great food, epic art, and advanced care in dentistry and cosmetic surgery.

That’s right, medical tourism in Mexico is growing due to its strong reputation in these two areas of healthcare.

With 7 JCI accredited hospitals and another 98 that are accredited by Mexico’s Federal Health Ministry, you know you’ll be in good hands.

US travelers can expect to save 40% to 60% on the cost of healthcare in Mexico. Mexico is one of the best universal health care countries and free health care for citizens in a constitutional right.

7. Panama

Panama is one of the 12 countries with the cheapest healthcare

Panama is a top location for many things: second-citizenship, retirement and also medical tourism!

Benefits for those from the US include a massive saving of 40% to 70% on the costs of healthcare. Some private hospitals in Panama also partner with American hospitals so you may recognize the names of them!

Medical staff in Panama are also well-trained, offer high-quality service and often speak English, which helps remove any language barriers if you don’t speak Spanish. Private health care is available in Panama and it is also one of the universal health care countries.

8. Singapore

Singapore is one of the 12 countries with the cheapest medical care

The World Health Organization ranks Singapore as the top provider of healthcare out of all Asian countries.

In addition to this, in 2014, Bloomberg ranked Singapore as one of the top three countries with the most efficient healthcare systems in the world!

Of course, with Singapore being one of the most developed countries in the world, medical tourists are guaranteed incredible facilities, medical services, and access to specialists.

That’s not even the best part. Singapore’s healthcare system also offers bang for your buck and is one of the cheapest healthcare options. In Singapore, a patient will pay 25% to 40% less than what they would pay for medical services in the US.

9. South Korea

South Korea is one of the 12 countries with the cheapest healthcare

If you want access to advanced healthcare service, well trained staff as well as state of the art technology, South Korea is where you want to be!

Medical tourism is booming in South Korea, particularly thanks to the insurance coverage offered to medical tourists. In addition, many hospitals provide spacious rooms with two beds for patients who bring a travel companion with them.

By traveling to South Korea, you would save 30% to 45% in health costs, compared to the US.

10. Taiwan

In fact, the National Taiwan University (NTU) undertook the first kidney transplant in Asia! 

Not only was it revolutionary in undertaking the procedure, but the NTU also offers high-quality and affordable treatments for medical tourists.

Patients generally save between 40% to 50% in healthcare cost in Taiwan compared to the cost of similar services in the US.

11. Thailand

Looking to save on healthcare? A patient will pay 50% to 75% less on medical bills in Thailand compared to the US!

12. Turkey

Turkey, where you can expect affordable and quality healthcare as well as zero waiting times! In addition, Turkish Airlines, the national airline, also offers discounted flight rates for medical tourists.

Turkey specialises in delivery of neurosurgery, radiation therapy, orthopaedic surgery as well as transplant surgery.

Patients will pay around 60% less for these and other healthcare services in Turkey compared to the US.

  • Before the term “influencer” or “content creator” existed, I was one of the original travel bloggers, unknowingly helping pioneer what is now a multibillion dollar Creator Industry. I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media! I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work.   • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?   • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out. First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own! Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious) Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts! In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers! I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle) Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..: I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!   • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North! For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it! There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop!   • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!   • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia! I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this! This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).   • I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!! Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while.. You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too. I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!) I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!! These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy? One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget! The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi! One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide!   • Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare? This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there. Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real! I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going. Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world. So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year. Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips. I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck? D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out. First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own! Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious) Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts! In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers! I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle) Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..: I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see! I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North! For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it! There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica! Anyone else have cool tattoos? ——————- For anyone new here: Hi! This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times! I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia! I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this! This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it). Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare? This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there. Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real!
