If you’re looking for holiday gifts for pets that travel, sit, stay, and go fetch! Corny joke, but anyway! One of the upsides of 2020 has been that I’ve been staying in one spot more often. Which also means I’ve been able to travel with my dog Oscar!

I’ve discovered that having pets that travel is a lot easier than I thought. It just requires some extra research, paperwork, OH! And some fun little toys and treats to keep them calm, healthy, and entertained!

In fact, so far I have brought Oscar to Banff, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and he’s currently road tripping with me all over the Yucatan in Mexico! Be sure to follow him on Instagram (@mylifesatravelpup) for pet travel tips!

This miniature shag rug called the Snuffle Mat by Paw 5 is all the rage right now! It’s designed to encourage natural foraging skills, and keep your pup busy for a while, by hiding treats inside of it! If you have a dog that’s a fast eater, this will also help slow them down by hiding the kibbles in it!

To be completely honest, Oscar thinks it’s his own personal rug, and loves to lay on it all day! He also plays with it like a toy! I’ll be putting it in his carrier for the next plane ride too!

CBD for Dogs

Something that’s also all the rage these days (including with humans) is therapeutic and medicinal CBD!

If you have an anxious, hyper, or attachment-issues-dog (like I do), you may want to look into the Honest Paws Calm line! Oscar is great at keeping quiet while flying, but he stands up the whole time because he’s anxious, so something like this definitely helps!

Dog Swaddle Carrier

Yes, this might look absolutely ridiculous to some people. BUT! If you’re an active traveler, or have an anxious dog, this dog swaddle works wonders! I use it when hiking or camping since my dog is very small and gets tired often.

It also works well while riding a bike, or even in the car if you want to keep them calm on your lap!

Emotional Support Animal Certification

Speaking of anxiety, if you legitimately have it, or any other mental health disorder, you can get your dog certified as an emotional support animal! Be sure to do it through a legitimate program like CertaPet, which requires you to have a call with an actual therapist for evaluation.

Once you are approved by a therapist, you will get an official letter stating that your pet is an ESA. You can use it to fly with your pet on your lap, and without having to pay a fee! You can also use it to stay at places that aren’t normally pet friendly!

The ultimate double win for holiday gifts for pets that travel AND their owners is GREENIES! For some reason dogs are obsessed with them, and that’s great, because they clean their teeth! They also make their breath fresh! Yay!

Non-Rawhide Bones

One of the many things I learned back in the day when I was a vet tech, was that raw hide is very bad for dogs! It’s hard to digest and can get stuck in their intestines! This was sad news, because my dog LOVES those little bones!

So I found a solution! Non-Rawhide SmartBones that are safe for your dog! They will keep them entertained for hours too! I always put one in Oscar’s carrier when we are on flights to distract him. It also helps pop his ears!

If you’re traveling somewhere where there’s water, you need this adorable shark fin life vest! One of my biggest fears is my dog falling in water and drowning (since he tries to follow me literally everywhere), so I just stick this life vest on him for peace of mind! Plus, it’s REALLY cute!

For travelers who love the beach, but it may be a bit too hot for doggo, there’s these doggie tents! I’ve tried using umbrellas, but found these mini tents work a lot better, and make my pup feel more comfortable. They also work in cold weather destinations as well, especially if you don’t want them getting your tent dirty!

Easy Holiday Gifts for Pets that Travel: Pet Wipes

If you’re staying in hotels with your pet, or if your pet sleeps in the bed with you in general, you should always have EarthRated pet wipes! You’d be shocked at how dirty their little feet get when walking outside! Pet wipes are specially formulated to be gentle on their paws while cleaning and moisturizing them!

These are also great for dogs that always get tear stains, or that like to roll around on the floor! Plus they’re plant based and compostable!

I have a couple of friends who have the Furbo Dog Camera, and they absolutely love it! Might even be addicted to it! If you miss your doggo while you’re out exploring, or are worried about what they might get up to while alone, this gadget is for you!

You can see the area you set it up in at any time, and you can even talk to your pet through it! Best of all, you can throw treats to your dog from it just by tapping a button on your phone!

This new foldable-top water bowl attached to a water bottle is also all the rage right now. I personally use collapsible food and water bowls (and bring a separate water bottle) but this product comes with all of it!

  • Orca swimming in La Ventana, Mexico has been SUSPENDED indefinitely, but there’s more to it than you might think, so keep reading, or comment “orcas” and I’ll send you the full information about the update, future prospects, and these Sea Safari tours in general. I know some people will automatically blame influencers for posting about swimming with orcas here (we’re used to it), but please keep in mind that many of us were posting the rules and regulations and urging people to be responsible and also that there was never an official “orca tour”, it’s always been a general Sea Safari, and seeing an orca is never guaranteed or promised. Anyway, before the 1 year trial, there was allegedly complete chaos, with over 35 boats chasing pods and no regulations about how many boats can be near them at a time or how many swimmers and how long they could be in the water. The trial period enforced those rules, limiting the number of boats and swimmers and how long each boat can be near the orcas. Many people listened, many did not. So that is now what the authorities are evaluating, to determine if they will continue to allow it or permanently ban it. All of my posts had clear disclaimers about the rules and how to be a responsible traveler here, and I purposely required that people personally email me for info about the tour to make sure they understood the rules, including that there is no “orca tour” but most people still specifically asked for that. In my opinion, after doing this experience, I don’t really think just anyone should be able to do it or run the tours…so many people just don’t listen or respect rules, and it is dangerous for the animals and themselves. If they do allow it in the future I think it should be mandatory that a certified marine biologist is onboard most boats, that boats and captains have specific training and certifications, and that tourists have to pay an addition environmental fee so the gov can hire more people to monitor and enforce regulations. Also a smaller amount of spots allowed per day. I don’t think observing orcas should be completely banned, otherwise people will just continue to go see them

Many people celebrate with family at home or at restaurants, so make reservations in advance, and wear your feast-fit 😮‍💨😬 Same applies for boat trip reservations and the beaches that require permits in advance!   • You cannot go within 15 feet of animals in Antarctica. But if THEY come up to you…well…what can you do?? 😬 I’ve been to Antarctica 4 times and this was a rare occasion when a penguin suddenly waddle-ran right up to me!   • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck? You cannot go within 15 feet of animals in Antarctica. But if THEY come up to you…well…what can you do?? 😬 I’ve been to Antarctica 4 times and this was a rare occasion when a penguin suddenly waddle-ran right up to me! It took a lot of willpower not to try and bend down to get closer, but I knew to just stay still and let it observe until it walked away! Other animals you can see in Antarctica are humpbacks, leopard seals, and Orcas! LMK if you have any questions about Antarctica! ———- For anyone new here: Hi! I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?
