My Kenya Safari Experience

If you don’t know what to expect from a Kenya safari, I’ve decided to write out my day-to-day experience in addition to the posts with tips on everything you need to know to do one!

My Kenya Safari Experience mylifesamovie.com

This should give you a pretty good idea of what the experience is like, and then  you can decide which safari to book and get ready for your Kenya travels using these other posts:

My Kenya safari was a 4 day/3 night adventure starting in Nairobi and going to Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, then back to Nairobi! It was an “affordable” safari (in between budget and luxury) which costed around $490. Here’s how it went down and what I saw and did:

Day 1: Nairobi to Great Rift Valley to Masai Mara + Evening Game Drive

Distance to Masai Mara: 6 hours

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
We took a pit stop for this epic view of the Great Rift Valley!

I was picked up promptly at 8am from my hotel where I joined 6 other guests (from Finland, France, and Russia) and my guide, Richard. We all fell asleep for most of the trip while the road was still paved (do that), and then we stopped for lunch.

Meals are all traditional Kenyan food buffet-style, and very healthy, with vegetarian options. You can typically expect to see rice, potatoes, cooked veggies, yum flatbread, and a meat option. Several other groups stopped at the same lunch spot. After lunch the road is no longer paved and extremely bumpy, so brace yourself and get used to it!

We arrived to Lenchada Camp around 4pm where we were shown to our tented camps and given tea before the evening game drive. We then got back into the safari vehicle and took a short but super bumpy drive through a Masai village to get to the park entrance.

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
One of the first animals I saw was a BABY ELEPHANT!! #safarigoals

During the evening drive we saw lions, zebras, giraffes, African elephants, African buffalo, and a bunch of different species of antelope (already 3 of the Big 5!).

We left just after sunset around 6pm, and had about an hour downtime before the buffet-style dinner in the rustic dining area. My group was joined by a few other groups, and after dinner we all chatted by the fire with the local Masai that came by. (Learn more about the Masai culture in this post: ‘Easy Essential Kenya Travel Information’)

I slept really well in the tent…almost too well in the morning since it basically has black out curtains! It was a bit cold in the morning though so my suggestion is to keep your warm clothes nearby!

Day 2: Early/All Day Game Drive in Masai Mara

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
‘Naaaaaah sabinyaaahhhh’!!! We were up early enough to see the sunrise in the Masai Mara park, as well as some of the night dwellers like hyenas!

We were given the option to combine our 2nd and 3rd morning Masai Mara game drives and do an all-day drive instead of going back and forth, so we opted for that. But that meant a 12 hour safari day with a 6am start!

At first I was super nervous about being tired all day, but you’re constantly perked up when you see the animals! We started the morning watching an epic African sunrise, then spotted hyenas feeding… Then we saw lion cubs and adults, elephants, buffalo, hippos, giraffes, zebras, and even a cheetah!

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
Seeing a Cheetah is worth getting up early for!

We stopped for a picnic lunch around noon where we were allowed to get out of the vehicles and eat on the Masai blankets they provided. They were bag lunches which looked fine, except I don’t think they knew how to accommodate a vegetarian since I still got roasted chicken in mine, which I couldn’t eat.

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
It’s super rare to spot a leopard since they usually hide/chill in trees!

After lunch we continued looking for animals, and finally found a leopard in a tree! After five more hours, we finally went back to the camp, and had dinner again at 7pm.

Day 3: Driving All Day to Lake Nakuru

Distance: 7+ hours

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
This is the actual Lake Nakuru (at a picnic area/viewpoint) which I think we were supposed to go to for an evening game drive but had some scheduling issues…

I’m not sure if this day went according to plan since we ended up having to drop off four people from other groups along the way. But essentially we left around 8:30am, stopped for lunch around noon, then continued driving for 4-5 more hours north to Lake Nakuru. The whole thing was on a bumpy dirt road.

We arrived at the hotel around 4pm and there was a big local family party going on which I quite enjoyed. I had wine at the outdoor bar and spoke with some locals. The only downside was the pool was super crowded but otherwise it looked really nice!

As I mentioned before the hotel was a typical 2-3 star as far as the actual accommodation. Nothing to write home about except there was definitely hot water, Wifi, friendly staff, and good breakfast. For some reason my room didn’t have a mosquito net (found out later the other people’s did) and I was kept awake by one rude mosquito buzzing in my ear all night.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru NationalPark & Back to Nairobi

Distance: 3+ hours

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
We immediately saw a family of White Rhinos, including a baby!!

We woke up early, had breakfast, and headed straight to Lake Nakuru National Park. Somehow the very first animals we saw were White Rhinos, and there was even a baby one! You can tell a White Rhino from the extremely endangered Black Rhino because the former had a wide, flat lip (like the bottom of a square), and the latter is more pointed.

We went to the lake but there weren’t any flamingos, but we did see a lot of buffalo and some random hyenas! This park was more green so I just enjoyed driving around and looking at the animals amongst it. We actually got a flat tire so got to get out of the vehicle and sit for a while right next to some zebras!

This park was a lot smaller and had less animals (aside from the rhinos), so we left around noon. We stopped in a really cute area near Lake Navaisha for lunch, then were on our way back to Nairobi!

I was one of the last ones dropped off which I didn’t mind since it was because the tour company had rescued my lost luggage and was storing it for me at their office which the guide took me to get before my hotel.

After Safari Accommodations:

Kenya safari experience mylifesamovie.com Alyssa Ramos
I splurged a bit and treated myself to a nice hotel in Nairobi after camping and driving for 4 days…

After camping and driving for four days, I splurge a bit and spoiled myself with a nicer hotel in Nairobi at the Best Western Meridian. It was still affordable-isn, at only $75 per night, but definitely worth it for the clean modern rooms, free wifi, amazing rooftop restaurant, bar, and pool, great breakfast spread, and even a spa!

Overall:

The long, bumpy drives, and early, cold mornings were definitely worth all of the animals I got to see. I did make the mistake of not asking to switch seats in the safari vehicle so sometimes felt like I didn’t get as many great photos as I could have (granted, I’m talking about with me IN them), but my guide did try to ask if I wanted to.

I was also really appreciative for our guide Richard, who was on point and on top of everything, and constantly determined to get us to see every possible animal in the parks! Plus I couldn’t imagine having to drive so many hours on my own!

If  you end up doing a tour with Lenchada Safaris, definitely request Richard (@romeorichie on Instagram).

If you have any questions that aren’t answered on my other Kenya posts, or are about my experience, the best way to get ahold of me is to comment below, or comment on a recent Instagram post which I check more often!

  • For all the queens and princesses who aren't getting that royal treatment they deserve at home -- go to Samarkand, Uzbekistan where you can dress up and feel like it at one of the most beaitiful places in the world!

Always remember though, you are the main person who can treat yourself like royalty, and you always should!

What do you do for yourself to feel like the "royal treatment"? For me it's little things like ordering bubbles on the plane even tho I'm in economy. 😁

Comment "queen" and ill DM you my full travel itinerary and tips for Uzbekistan, including how to book this photoshoot!
  • Don’t forget to vote today, preferably for kind, cultured, people with good-morals. 😁

Trust me, I do not want politics in my posts, but once again it seems like politics are always interrupting my travels, and I had to talk about this one!

I know I get judged a lot for what I do and wear…but when it’s by a representative from the U.S. gov who is in a country where I’m wearing the local fashion of, and they laugh and make a snarky remark to another minion, that’s where I have to call someone out.

Overheard at the train station in Samarkand, Uzbekistan by a couple of my group trip guests, was “Look at that b*tch in pink” by a member of Rubio’s delegation who were there doing security checks for his upcoming visit.

The group of horribly dressed older men and one woman then had the joke on them when they were given a tour of a bazaar…where the local fashion I was wearing was prominently on display everywhere. 🫠

Just goes to show that if these Gov officials can talk badly about a U.S. citizen abroad, just imagine what they think of you all back home!

So this is my response as a very proud “b*tch in pink”, and this whole situation is a great example of WHY I always purposely wear hot pink on my travels 🤗💖

PS stop starving your own people Marcocito!!!

Save this for future trip planning!

This is my 10th-ish year living on/off in Mexico, and I’ve been very fortunate to get to experience Dia de los Muertos in a few different cities! But no matter where you go, the most important thing is that you remember and celebrate those who have passed!!!

Or you can just wander around the barrios or cemeteries! Not joking, the cemeteries are all open and decorated, just be sure to pay your respects and not just go for photos…

  • Anyone else have a bunch of random currency from various countries all over the place? What do you do with it all??

I started using a cheap coupon organizer to keep track of it all, especially since I repeat many of the countries I go to, and it has been so much easier that just a bug wad of colorful bills!

If I know I likely won’t return to a country, I usually give the cash away though, or keep a small bill as a souvenir!

Never would have guessed my fanciest most valuable wallet would be the $5 one that stores priceless memories from 155 countries! (Well I don’t have cash from all of them, maybe just 50, but still!)

What’s your most valuable priceless possession?

  • Questions literally no one has ever asked about making 'smores or likely at the Darvaza Gas Crater (AKA "Door to Hell") in Turkmenistan.

((Comment "crater" and ill send my full blog post about how to go here! I've been twice now,))

This is a massive crater that collapsed in the desert when people were drilling for natural resources decades ago. Someone thought it would be smart to light it on fire, and it has been burning non stop ever since...

Rumors are it will close down soon for the gov to sell the gas, so go see it while you can! Or join one of my group adventures there!
  • When life brings you to the Door to HɛIl, roast some marshmallows, throw a dance party with friends, strap your seat belt on tight, and HOLD ON for a wild ride out of there! ...both figuratively and literally.

This is the famous Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenkstan, Aka the "Door to Hɛll". I went here solo last year and then recently brought my Travel Tribe which was waayyyyyy more fun...perhaps too much fun!!

First of all, I've never seen people enjoy that minivan Mario Kart race through the barren desert before 😂 or thought anyone would be down for Turkmen beer roadies.

Then the looks on all of their faces when we drove up to the gas crater at night made the journey not only worth it but priceless!

We then proceeded to have an aggressive game of UNO (a must on our adventures), too much Turkmen wine (that's similar to port) and a very uncomfortable sleepover in yurts with "Chanel" and "Versace" bedding. IYKYK.

Also, can't believe I found marshmallows there, or that one of the guides just lit a hole on fire to roast them, but the smell of gas was very unappetizing so they were not consumed (by me).

FYI everyone is still saying the Darvaza Crater will be extinguished soon so the gov can capture the gas to sell, so go see it while you can, if you're up for a truly wild adventure!!

More wild and weird stories from our 5 Stans Group Adventure coming soon! 🤪

Is this on your bucketlist??
  • Tajikistan is one of the 5 "Stans of Central Asia" and the one that most people looked at me with confusion when I list off the names of them!

But it's not surprising, since it only became an independent country in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Drop me a comment if you have questions about the geopolitics there today 😁

Traveling through Tajikistan felt like a truly unique and authentic experience, especially in the local markets and towns, since not many American citizens venture there (so we were told).

The first thing we noticed in Panjakent was that the women all had super sparkly hijabs and clothing...so we went straight to the bazaar and bought the same! We got a lot of smiles and thumbs up after that!

We then explored the 7 Lakes of the Fann Mountains, getting there early before the day trip groups, and experiencing the lakes all to ourselves while avoiding traffic jams on cliffside roads that aren't for the feint of heart!

If you do the "5 Stans", definitely do more than a day trip to Tajikistan!

And if you dont want to figure out the crazy logistics for all 5 yourself, sign up for our waiting list for the next ones with @mylifesatraveltribe
!

BTW the kids are yelling "Tajikistan the best!" and permission was asked to make the video...even though they video-bommed me 😂💖

We also got a few group pics with the Travel Tribe! It’s definitely been extremely fun being here a second time with them!!

Photography company tagged as a collaborator!

Would you do this or nah?
