8 North Bali Hidden Gems

Everyone flocks to Seminyak, Canngu, and Uluwatu, but check out these 8 North Bali hidden gems!

When you think of Bali, you probably envision swimwear clad bodies next to bright blue villa pools, surrounded by white and yellow frangipangi flowers, probably some fruit, and give or take a few rad pool floaties.

Or, maybe your mind automatically wanders to the iconic rice terraces of Tengalalang, or the equally popular Tegenungan waterfall, or super exclusive, can-only-go-if-you-have-money Hanging Gardens in Ubud.

Bonus points if you’re up to date on the most recent Bali photo trend; the Bali Swing, and all the variations of whimsical photos people have been posting from it! But while all of those places are admittedly epic to see (and I’ve totally taken photos at all of them), I have to say…they’re a bit overdone.

That’s why on my recent trip to Bali, I decided to venture past the typical Instagram photo spots, to do the one thing I love doing the most; chase waterfalls, and attempt taking photos of myself in them. The best waterfalls I had seen in Indonesia prior to my recent escapades were all on other islands like Lombok and Flores, but I knew there had to be more on Bali, so I did some research, and set off to the region of north Bali to find them.

Spoiler Alert: north Bali is waterfall heaven.

Yes, it takes a little longer to get there than the usual popular destinations, but it’s so worth it when you see how many incredible adventures and photo spots there are. That being said…if you’re going for the photos, please be sure to enjoy the journey along the way!

So enough of the suspense, here’s my favorite 8 new Bali photo spots you didn’t know existed, including the Airbnb treehouse I stayed in up there!

1. Favorite North Bali gem: Banyumala Waterfall

This waterfall was by far my favorite in all of Bali! It looks just like the popular one on Lombok, but doesn’t require a 5 hour ferry to get to it! It’s not hard to find, but you can get the exact directions here. It only costs about $2 to go to, and there’s other waterfalls there too!

Go there early, as it’s no longer a secret and big tour groups head there as well.

2. Danau Buyan Lake “Selfie Park”

Ok…so maybe this is on the same level of “set up token Instagram shot” as the Bali Swing is…but in their defense, it’s a REALLY good idea. Clearly the locals noticed how selfie-crazed all of us travelers are, so they got smart and built small parks on the side of this lake that you can pay about $1 to get a nicely framed shot of the lake. Plus it’s safe since they help you onto the swings, nests, boats, etc., so you can’t get yelled at on Instagram.

There’s no GPS coordinates for the “selfie parks”, but you’ll be able to see them on the side of the road, or you can find them near this address.

3. Pucak Manik Waterfall

Pucak Manik is such a hidden gem that there were no other people there for hours!

I literally found this waterfall by Google-mapping the word “waterfall” and zooming in on what pops up. It’s definitely a place not many people have discovered yet, which I can tell since no one else was there for the hours I was playing at it, which makes it all the more enchanting. Plus there’s a 4-level treehouse you can climb!

4. Baturiti Treehouse AirBnB

Yes, those are trees, and yes, that is a treehouse. In the middle of the jungle farm area of northern Bali! It was only $23 a night to stay here, and included a full Balinese breakfast, plus they helped with motorbike rentals. I probably could have stayed closer to the waterfalls, which are about 45 minutes away, but I mean…it’s a treehouse…sooooo.

5. Git Git Waterfall

Git Git is the best-known of all of these locations, but not necessarily the best one in my opinion. I’m more of a bright green and sunny type of gal, but if you like a dramatic cave waterfall, Git Git is definitely for you! You an jump off the rocks behind it too if you’re daring enough!

6. Munduk Moding Plantation

If you’ve got a little extra cash to burn, I would HIGHLY recommend staying at Munduk Moding Plantation! The property is just absolutely stunning, located high in the hills, eye level with the misty clouds.

You’ll have your own villa with butler, and some of them have private infinity pools! There’s also two communal infinity pools as well.

Best of all, it includes a very thorough activity schedule with a lot of cultural influence! I learned how to make Canang offering, how to Balinese dance, wear their traditional clothes, I even rode one of their horses! They also include a trip to the beach and a hot spring (see below!) and can arrange transport to waterfalls for an additional fee.

7. Lovina Beach

If you’re staying in north Bali and craving some warm sunshine and salt water, you can head to Lovina Beach! It’s a black sand beach with a couple of cute beach restaurant/bars, complete with the token Balinese umbrellas and bean bag chairs to lounge on!

It was still a bit quiet when I went there (May 2023) as they’re still recovering from the c-word, but most places were open! And it’s extremely cheap!

8. Handara Gate

Originally I had included this famous, scenic gateway in my round up of secret locations, but since it’s not so secret, I decided not to claim it was. Made famous by us Instagram influencers, this gateway (to a golf resort) can be seen right off the main road in north Bali, on the way to the lake and waterfalls.

Although like the Bali Swing, EVERYONE has been taking photos here recently, it’s still really pretty, and on the way to the secret spots anyway. You can find the address and directions here: Bali Instagram Gateway.

  • Orca swimming in La Ventana, Mexico has been SUSPENDED indefinitely, but there’s more to it than you might think, so keep reading, or comment “orcas” and I’ll send you the full information about the update, future prospects, and these Sea Safari tours in general. I know some people will automatically blame influencers for posting about swimming with orcas here (we’re used to it), but please keep in mind that many of us were posting the rules and regulations and urging people to be responsible and also that there was never an official “orca tour”, it’s always been a general Sea Safari, and seeing an orca is never guaranteed or promised. Anyway, before the 1 year trial, there was allegedly complete chaos, with over 35 boats chasing pods and no regulations about how many boats can be near them at a time or how many swimmers and how long they could be in the water. The trial period enforced those rules, limiting the number of boats and swimmers and how long each boat can be near the orcas. Many people listened, many did not. So that is now what the authorities are evaluating, to determine if they will continue to allow it or permanently ban it. All of my posts had clear disclaimers about the rules and how to be a responsible traveler here, and I purposely required that people personally email me for info about the tour to make sure they understood the rules, including that there is no “orca tour” but most people still specifically asked for that. In my opinion, after doing this experience, I don’t really think just anyone should be able to do it or run the tours…so many people just don’t listen or respect rules, and it is dangerous for the animals and themselves. If they do allow it in the future I think it should be mandatory that a certified marine biologist is onboard most boats, that boats and captains have specific training and certifications, and that tourists have to pay an addition environmental fee so the gov can hire more people to monitor and enforce regulations. Also a smaller amount of spots allowed per day. I don’t think observing orcas should be completely banned, otherwise people will just continue to go see them

  • You cannot go within 15 feet of animals in Antarctica. But if THEY come up to you…well…what can you do?? 😬 I’ve been to Antarctica 4 times and this was a rare occasion when a penguin suddenly waddle-ran right up to me!   • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck? You cannot go within 15 feet of animals in Antarctica. It took a lot of willpower not to try and bend down to get closer, but I knew to just stay still and let it observe until it walked away! I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!! I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many! Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?
