2019 Holiday Gift Guide for Travelers

Welcome to my 2019 Holiday Gift Guide for Travelers! I’ve hand selected these innovative, useful, and fun holiday gifts for travelers according to what I’d personally love to see under my Christmas tree, so you definitely know they’re legit!

Many of them are items I always have with me, and that says a lot since I’m a full time traveler! Whether your budget is big or small, there’s something on here for everyone!

And let’s not forget…the best gift of all is the gift of travel! Be sure to check out my #MyLifesATravelTRIBE Group Trip gift cards that will help send your favorite traveler on an epic adventure!

Group Trip Travel Gift Card

I wasn’t joking! Travel is seriously the best gift you can give to a traveler, so I created the option to send a travel voucher to anyone who is confirmed on my 2020 #MyLifesATravelTRIBE Group Trips! Email me personally to get one (alyssa @ mylifesamovie.com).

Just throwing it out there that one girl’s mom got her the India group trip last year as a graduation present! Which is what gave me the idea to include it in my holiday gift guide for travelers!

DJI Osmo Camera + Gimbal

Cost: $399

This nifty gadget is GoPro’s biggest competitor and has an extra perk to offer! The DJI Osmo is a gimbal (device used to keep the camera steady while filming) that comes with a built-in camera, but it can also be removed and replaced with your smartphone! So you get the action cam AND a gimbal for the same price as a GoPro!

DJI Mavic MINI

FINALLY, DJI came out with a drone that’s easy for everyone to use! It’s small, lightweight, and way cheaper than the regular sized DJI Mavic Pro that I’ve been lugging all over the world. Definitely worth it for travelers who love photography and videography!

GoPro Hero 8

Cost: $399

I know I know, another updated version of the GoPro. It’s like the story of all of our iPhone lives! The new and improved version features something none of the later models have though…outputs for accessories like flashes and microphones! It also has the hypersmooth stabilization (that makes a gimbal not required) and a new timewarp feature.

SkyRoam Solis X Wifi Hotspot + Camera

Cost: $179

For the traveler who’s also a digital nomad, social media maven, or who just likes the reassurance of staying connected! The SkyRoam Solis is a Wifi hotspot with 4G connectivity and a built in charger, AKA everything your favorite traveler needs to function just like they normally would at home! The latest version also has a built in camera! It’s definitely something that’s always packed in my travel bag!

Pixelbook Travel Laptop/Tablet

Cost: $649

Lately I’ve been using the new Google Pixelbook while I travel, and I absolutely love it! It’s a laptop and tablet in one, and extremely thin, lightweight, and affordable! Added perks of this device are that you can download apps like LightRoom Mobile (super easy to edit on a bigger screen), and Netflix which you can watch offline!

Slash-Proof Seatbelt Bag

Another item I can swear by since it’s lasted me three years of rugged traveling; bags made out of seatbelts which make them slash proof and durable. I’ve literally flown off a motorcycle and landed on mine and it didn’t have a scratch slash also probably saved my life.

Travel Compression Bags

I’ve been using travel compression bags to pack for the last 6 years, and wouldn’t be able to fit all of my things without them! They’re super easy to use, do NOT require a vacuum (you roll the air out like in the photo), and will keep your clothes organized, and taking up only 1/3 of the space!

Bamboo Straw and Utensils

Help your favorite traveler go green and reduce plastic waste when they’re on their journeys! Single use plastic is RUINING our planet, and used so much when we travel, so these bamboo utensils , straw, and toothbrush are an ideal alternative. Plus it makes a super cute gift!

Annual Travel Insurance Plan

Holiday Gifts for Travelers mylifesamovie.com

The only thing exciting about getting a Travel Insurance plan as a holiday gift is that it’s one less thing your favorite traveler has to worry about paying for. Not joking. Even I don’t want to shell out an annual fee of only $129, even though it covers emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, etc. Feels really good to have it…especially when someone else gets it for you. Get a Free 10-Day Look with Allianz Global Assistance, a world leader in travel insurance. Get a free quote now.

There’s also a new travel + medical insurance company for nomads that’s pretty affordable and would make a great gift! It’s called Safety Wing! Check it out!

‘1000 Places to See Before You Die’

The first travel book I ever bought, and actually my inspiration for pursuing a career in travel writing! It’s also the perfect gift for the wanderlust traveler, and those looking for some solid travel tips!

Pepper Spray

For peace of mind…mostly for yourself. Yes, it is legal to carry pepper spray with you when you travel, and it’s even TSA approved! I would know since I’ve carried this exact one with me to over twenty countries!

Scratch Off Map

The easy go-to gift for any wanderluster, whether they’ve traveled to seventy two countries (like me), or are just getting started mapping out their journey (like me three years ago).

Multiple Time Zone Watch

This is something I’ve actually always wanted, a multiple time zone watch! Mostly to help when it comes to posting Instagram photos at the right time, and not waking friends and family up in the middle of the night when I’m on the other side of the world.

Travel Chord Organizer

So simple yet so overlooked! I actually had to makeshift my own travel chord organizer, but it looks most similar to this on, so this is what I’d recommend. I’ve never felt more responsible in my whole life.

Solid Shampoo

For once, you can get away with giving toiletries as a holiday present! This smart product eliminates the need to rely on TSA sized liquid shampoos, not to mention the good chance they’ll leak in your luggage! Especially awesome for roadtrips and camping!

Carry-on Cocktail Kit

I mean, this doesn’t really need a description does it? EVERY traveler (besides the sober ones) will appreciate getting a Carry On Cocktail Kit! ….Including me.

World Map Necklace

The next best thing you can give a traveler after an actual tattoo of the map, is this cute little world map necklace! It may tarnish, but at least it’ll be easier to take off than a tattoo! A lot of people ask where I get mine from when I wear it in photos…they’ll be super excited that you now know!

Collapsible Water Bottle

Eco-friendly, and convenient! Think of how many times you’ll save your favorite traveler from having to buy an overpriced water bottle at the airport with this handy dandy collapsible water bottle!

Rainbow Umbrella

For the aspiring travel influencer who might be going to a not-so-sunny destination next, and needs a little pop of color for their photographs.

Tilt Neck Pillow

Forget those traditional toilet-seat-looking neck pillows that are impossible to figure out! This one offers the actual neck support your traveler needs to fall asleep just about anywhere sitting up. I always rave about this thing because it makes me sleep for HOURS on flights!

Portable Toothbrush

Because mini travel size toothbrushes just make sense when you’re traveling. Especially on planes! Plus, did someone say “useful stocking stuffer”?

Waterproof Fold-able Makeup Case

This can be used for a lot of other things too! I personally wouldn’t even advise taking this much makeup, but this foldable case looks perfect for toiletries too!

Theft-Proof Backpack

The awesome gift every solo traveler wants to get…the gift of not getting your stuff stolen! This theftproof backpack makes it hard to break in, while still being accessible to use.

Poo Purri

For the travelers who stay in hostels, travel couples, or people who just like to be polite. This nifty little product will make you have unicorn poo.

Scrubba Portable Washing Machine

Scrubba LifeStraw mylifesamovie.com

They’ll never have to worry about dirty clothes while traveling again with the Scrubba Portable Laundry System! All you have to do is add water, soap, and dirty clothes, then shake, scrub, rinse, and repeat! The Scrubba bag itself also doubles as a drybag, in case you’re heading out on a boat, or folds up really small so it doesn’t take up space in your bag!

I had no idea we were doing a Via Ferrata on our first day of the girls’ trip, and was actually scared, but it ended up being really fun!

If you’re up for an adventure, it’s in Peja, a beautiful mountain area! All of my travel tips are on my website, mylifesamovie.com !

  • Orca swimming in La Ventana, Mexico has been SUSPENDED indefinitely, but there’s more to it than you might think, so keep reading, or comment “orcas” and I’ll send you the full information about the update, future prospects, and these Sea Safari tours in general.

I know some people will automatically blame influencers for posting about swimming with orcas here (we’re used to it), but please keep in mind that many of us were posting the rules and regulations and urging people to be responsible and also that there was never an official “orca tour”, it’s always been a general Sea Safari, and seeing an orca is never guaranteed or promised.

Anyway, before the 1 year trial, there was allegedly complete chaos, with over 35 boats chasing pods and no regulations about how many boats can be near them at a time or how many swimmers and how long they could be in the water.

The trial period enforced those rules, limiting the number of boats and swimmers and how long each boat can be near the orcas. Many people listened, many did not. So that is now what the authorities are evaluating, to determine if they will continue to allow it or permanently ban it.

All of my posts had clear disclaimers about the rules and how to be a responsible traveler here, and I purposely required that people personally email me for info about the tour to make sure they understood the rules, including that there is no “orca tour” but most people still specifically asked for that.

In my opinion, after doing this experience, I don’t really think just anyone should be able to do it or run the tours…so many people just don’t listen or respect rules, and it is dangerous for the animals and themselves.

If they do allow it in the future I think it should be mandatory that a certified marine biologist is onboard most boats, that boats and captains have specific training and certifications, and that tourists have to pay an addition environmental fee so the gov can hire more people to monitor and enforce regulations. Also a smaller amount of spots allowed per day.

I don’t think observing orcas should be completely banned, otherwise people will just continue to go see them
  • Ferragosto is one of the biggest holidays in Italy, every year on August 15th! So definitely don’t come here that day unless you want to experience local celebrations in the form of beach or boat days, and massive feasts with lots of wine!

Many people celebrate with family at home or at restaurants, so make reservations in advance, and wear your feast-fit 😮‍💨😬

Same applies for boat trip reservations and the beaches that require permits in advance!

This is my 3rd summer living in Sardinia and I put all the tips on my Sardinia Travel Guide on my website! Just comment “Sardinia” and I’ll send it to you!

((Transparency — I actually don’t recommend coming here in August at all because it’s the most hot and crowded month, but if that’s your vibe, you’ll love Ferragosto!))

Have you heard of this famous Italian holiday? Can you name any of the dishes in the vid? 😁

  • You cannot go within 15 feet of animals in Antarctica. But if THEY come up to you…well…what can you do?? 😬

I’ve been to Antarctica 4 times and this was a rare occasion when a penguin suddenly waddle-ran right up to me! It took a lot of willpower not to try and bend down to get closer, but I knew to just stay still and let it observe until it walked away!

Other animals you can see in Antarctica are humpbacks, leopard seals, and Orcas!

LMK if you have any questions about Antarctica!

  • My therapist said I’m a workaholic with ADHD and to find a hobby where I can’t use my phone or laptop that will also keep me captivated for hours, so behold! My new hobby of shark diving! 🦈💖

Unlike regular diving, snorkeling, or swimming, you must always be highly alert, ready to respond, and on the go if you want to try to keep up with them!

The ultimate workaholic-ADHD-adventurer’s dream hobby, do you agree?

[DISCLAIMER] Yes sharks can be dangerous, but only when provoked or taunted with food. I have extensive experience around sharks and apex predators, and a degree in animal science, all of which I use to promote positive awareness and protection for sharks and other misunderstood animals!

  • Before the term “influencer” or “content creator” existed, I was one of the original travel bloggers, unknowingly helping pioneer what is now a multibillion dollar Creator Industry.

I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand.

I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so…

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media!

I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work.

Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!)

I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going.

Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world.

So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year.

Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips.

Thank you everyone who has been here with me for so long, and welcome to anyone new!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!) I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going. To follow along with my updates, please comment “travel

I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. ———————- For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the most traveled and most experienced solo female travelers in the world!
