My 17 Most Epic Travel Wins and Fails of 2017

Alyssa Ramos

Search

Each year I feel like I say, “This was the best year ever!!!” But hands down, 2017 takes the grand prize of Most Epic Year of My Life.

2017 Travel Wins and Fails mylifesamovie.com (1)

Not only did I reach my 7th Continent, 7th World Wonder, 7th Wonder of Nature, and 75th Country but…actually nevermind, that pretty much sums up my most epic year yet.

BUT! Don’t let me fool you! Traveling full time, especially to the adventurous, sometimes-dangerous destinations comes with a price! So while I’m going to love recapping my most epic travel wins this year, I will never forget those fails that come along with the price of travel!

Drumroll please! Here’s the countdown!

17. F: Getting my Debit Card Shut off in Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls travel wins and fails mylifesamovie.com

What had happened was…I was out of cash, and so were ALL of the ATMs in Puerto Iguazu. This was bad for two reasons; 1. Because I had been DYING to see Iguazu Falls for years, and 2. Because I was trying to sneakily get a visa for Brazil at the border there, and it required cash only.

I scrounged up enough of all of my spare money to get it exchanged and pay for the visa (which I successfully got in 24 hours as opposed to 6 weeks in the US), and accidentally ended up sneaking into Iguazu Falls. Later, I met a girl on the bus who let me Venmo her money, and she took it out at an ATM for me.

16. W: Reaching my 7th World Wonder: Christ the Redeemer

christredeemerrio-mylifesamovie-com

After basically sneaking into Brazil, I headed straight to Rio to see Christ the Redeemer, which completed my list of seeing all 7 New World Wonders!

15. F: Getting my Drone Taken in Budapest

travel wins and fails budapest mylifesamovie.com
Oh Budapest…why’d you do me so dirty…

For some reason TSA decided to take my little drone away at the airport as I was LEAVING Budapest. As in…I didn’t even use it while I was there, and they still took it anyway. They claimed they are illegal to have.

Luckily, one nice soul took it from the other guards, wrote an email on a piece of paper and gave it to me, which I later found out was the Lost and Found. A few weeks later (and several angry emails) I decided to fly back to Budapest and pick it up on my way to Iceland.

14. W/F: Roadtripping New Zealand

Rob Roy Glacier - 10 Best New Zealand Roadtrip stops - mylifesamovie.com

New Zealand is a win because of how epic it was, and a fail because of how expensive it was. I could go on for days about all the wins and fails of roadtripping around New Zealand, or I can just direct you to all of the blog posts. Let’s just say by the end of the trip I had slept in a rental car, and also a camper van that I had to use wrapping paper on to close the windows.

13. F: Having to Leave Someone in Portugal

travel wins and fails mylifesamovie.com

During one of my travel intermissions in Los Angeles (where I call home when I’m not abroad), I somehow ended up meeting a soap opera actor who convinced me he would be great to travel the world with. I’m not entirely sure why I believed a soap. opera. actor. But let’s just say he was a really good actor, and a terrible traveler.

Since I always travel solo, you can imagine how convincing this guy had to have been (also helped that he was ridiculously good looking), but after about two days in Portugal, I literally had to escape him! I won’t go into full juicy details, but just know that I said the word “Fail” more than I ever have in my life during that time period.

12. W: Speaking at 3 Travel Conferences

travel wins and fails 2017 mylifesamovie.com

Turns out after you’ve been to about 70 countries and have started a career as a professional travel blogger, you kind of know what you’re talking about! I was beyond proud and humbled to speak at three travel conferences in 2017, all over the world!

The first was World Tourism Forum in Istanbul, the second was Women’s Travel Fest in New Orleans, and the third was Experience Bucharest in Romania!

11. F/W: Getting Left in Zanzibar

zanzibar travel wins and fails mylifesamovie.com
Wait! Don’t leaveeee! I”ll be Ok if you do tho….

Another half fail half win was when I suddenly got left in Zanzibar. What had happened was that the person who drove us to Tanzania from Malawi (then we took a ferry to Zanzibar) revealed that he had back pain that might need surgery, and was going to leave Zanzibar and drive back to South Africa the next day. I had no plans for Zanzibar, nor did I have my flight out of there yet. Plus, 3/4 of my stuff was in his truck in Tanzania!

But I won in the end…I ended up getting last minute collaborations through my Instagram with some 5 star resorts in Zanzibar, picked up my stuff that he left at a friend’s place afterwards, and picked a flight out that had a layover in a very important place (Vietnam, where my last of the 7 Wonders of Nature was).

Actually there were more fails: I was completely out of money because my debit card shut off again, and back on mainland Tanzania I checked into the sketchiest hotel on earth (you may remember from my IG stories that it looked like Saw or Hostel), and was constantly followed by people. It’s actually the second most scary travel moments of my life.

10. F: Forgetting to Get a Visa for Vietnam

travel fails and wins vietnam mylifesamovie.com
Probbaabbllyy should have checked visa requirements before I had to pay for a whole new flight to Vietnam…

You’d think I’d be a pro traveler by now, but booking flights and making plans last minute sometimes results in a fail. Namely, forgetting to check if you need a visa or not. Since I suddenly had to book a flight out of Zanzibar, I forgot to check requirements for Vietnam, and spoiler alert: I needed one.

I was held at the Bangkok airport on my layover until I was able to contact the Vietnam embassy, and get the damn visa. I missed my connection, and ran around the airport trying to fulfill all the requirements before the next flight out…..maddee ittt.

9. W: Reaching my 7th Wonder of Nature: Halong Bay

Halong Bay Vietnam TripAdvisor mylifesamovie.com

This was one of the most random, last minute trips I’ve ever done, which makes it all the more epic. On my way from Zanzibar to Bali, I purposely stopped in Vietnam just to go see my last of the 7 Wonders of Nature: Halong Bay.

I somehow managed to book a last minute 2 night Halong Bay cruise, the day after a tsunami, and had perfect sunny weather the entire time!

8. W: Doing my First Group Trip in Iceland

mylifesatraveltribe iceland travel wins and fails mylifesamovie.com
For the first time ever…a group of solo travelers trusted me enough to plan a trip…and we had the best time EVER!

At the beginning of 2017 I vowed to start doing Group Trips which I named #MyLifesATravelTRIBE, and am happy to report back that I completed four of them this year! The very first was in Iceland, with 8 other travelers, and we had an amazing time! The other group trips were in Bali (part of our Bali Blogger Bootcamp), Patagonia, and Antarctica!

If you’re interested in 2018 Group Trips, please email info@mylifesamovie.com or wait until I get that post up 🙂

7. W: Roadtripping Across 6 Countries in Africa

Elephant Cafe livingstone zambia mylifesamovie.com

I could probably make an entire list of wins and fails with just this trip, but as a whole, it was definitely one of my most epic travel wins in 2017! I was the first ever US ambassador for Put Foot Rally: a charity roadtrip across 6 countries in Southern Africa that also delivers brand new shoes to kids in need.

I had a sick camper truck (but still got to stay at a few fancy places), and saw all sorts of nature that I could have only dreamt about on Nat Geo! I may even be making it a group trip option for 2018!

6. F: Crashing a Drone in Namibia

Dead Vlei mylifesamovie.com
PSA: Drones are not allowed in most parts of Namibia for really good reasons…like the potential to crash them…

I had to give this travel fail a special mention just because the story is so ridiculous. So we’re driving for hours through Namibia (ALL desert) and suddenly decide to stop and film some footage of me driving. Since we hadn’t seen another car in hours, we figured it would be find to position the drone outside of my driver’s window, in the middle of the road.

The drone pilot instructed me to get ready to wave at the drone, as he watched what it looked like from the remote in his lap. He then said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if of all times, a car came by right….” BAM. Safari jeep comes out of literally no where and smashes the DJI Mavic Pro mid-air. Luckily the driver or other car wasn’t harmed, and he wasn’t mad…just super confused…and we somehow got ahold of another drone in Namibia.

5. W: Proving Solo Female Travel in Morocco is Safe

How to Get to Chefchaouen mylifesamovie.com

A big travel accomplishment for me was finally traveling solo in Morocco. Like most people, I had heard that it wasn’t safe, especially for solo female travelers. I came up with a plan to use all AirBnB’s so I could also have help from the hosts, and the trip turned out to be beyond amazing!

4. F: Drowning my New GoPro in Easter Island

easter island diving travel wins and fails mylifesamovie.com
It was the most epic moment ever until my GoPro drowned…photo shot with an old school underwater cam!

Since I had very limited service in Easter Island, I didn’t have enough time to look up the depth that the new GoPro Hero 6 can go to when I randomly decided to go scuba diving in Easter Island. I also decided to neglect the fact that this would be my deepest dive yet at 23 meters (but I HAD to see the underwater Moai!) and that was probably way too deep for a GoPro.

Well. It was, and it ended up getting water in my brand new Hero 6…which is the only camera I had to use the next week in Patagonia and Antarctica. Luckily though GoPro is awesome and loves me and sent me a new one…

3. W: Finally Going to Easter Island

Easter Island mylifesamovie.com 2

Going to Easter Island never felt like it was possible until 2017…mostly because of how much it costs and because you only ever see it on Nat Geo. BUT, I decided it was what I wanted to spend my money on, and finally went! I met amazing people, including a local guy I may have fallen in love with, and saw every standing Moai on the island by driving myself around!

2. F!!!! Flipping a Car in Patagonia

Patagonia car crash alyssa ramos mylifesamovie.com
It’s a long story….

My new found manual driving skills weren’t that exciting anymore when a sudden turn on a dirt road en route to Torres del Paine left me hanging upside down by my seatbelt. To make matters worse, there were three other girls in the car (all wearing seatbelts and safe), and we flipped in the middle of nowhere.

This was by far the most terrifying moment of my life, mostly because I thought I had injured other people. I had the car rental insurance, but still ended up paying $3,500 (neither my regular or travel insurance could help since I wasn’t injured…), which is a small price to pay for being alive.

1. W: Finally Going to ANTARCTICA

2017 travel wins and fails mylifesamovie.com alyssa ramos

F I N A L L Y!!! The number one bucketlist destination of my life, Antarctica, has been achieved! As of last week (December 10-20), I have officially been to all 7 Continents, and to be completely honest, it was probably the greatest experience of my life! From running around onboard the expedition ship trying not to fall from the tilting of the Drake Passage, to stepping foot on this rare continent, and seeing wildlife galore, this trip takes the cake and blows everything else out of the water.

That being said, 2018 has A LOT to live up to, especially if I want to top the most epic year of my life!

BURUNDI — This has been one of my favorite “hidden gems” in Africa, and it completely shattered my expectations (even though I got off the plane in the wrong country trying to get there)! I was shown around by locals, who took me to an incredible waterfall, a drum ceremony, and then they invited me to a wedding!! It’s been one of the most real, unique experiences I’ve had, and I’d love to talk more about it!

CHINA — My current fascination is exploring as much of China as I can! After a bad experience in my early travels, I finally returned with a lot more travel experience, and absolutely fell in love. China is truly ahead of the curve, and as they say “living in the future”, but I also loved that I could still experience a lot of their traditional past!

SAUDI ARABIA — before I got stuck in the woarzone earlier this year, I traveled solo to Saudi expecting difficulties and judgement. Instead, I was treated with respect, and I
  • Am I afraid of Orcas? More like obsessed with them. I WISH they’d pop up when I’ve done the Polar Plunge, but so far they’ve only ever approached our small boat in Mexico, where we were permitted to follow regulations and swim with them!

I’ve done the Polar Plunge in Antarctica 3x and once in the Arctic, Orcas are always possibly present, but I know that humans are NOT part of their diet. We probably have too many toxins, chemicals, and damaged livers for them. 😁

I’ll be repeating both activities soon, so if you’d like more info on solo travel to Antarctica, the Arctic, or swimming with Orcas in Mexico, (OR joining one of my community’s expeditions there) drop me a comment and I’ll answer,

  • I’ve climbed Kilimanjaro and Everest Basecamp with no fear of heights issues at all, then I got to China and suddenly developed jelly legs and vertigo 😳😂

Out of the 145 countries I’ve been to so far, China by far wins for most extreme adrenaline activities, especially at extreme heights!

Everyone does them so casually there too, even in dresses like me, so maybe I’ve found my adventure people!!

I’m already planning to go back to China. I love it that much. Have you been? Wanna join us?

  • I bought a new phone in China bc you get a decent tax refund, but soon after, it started talking to me in Chinese, and then people started calling it and sending text messages!

I honestly felt like I was in a movie, where you find a phone and then suddenly you’re forced to carry out some crazy mission or something!

Turns out, for some reason, the girl who sold me the phone put her own SIM card in it to activate it (no idea why), and it was all her friends calling her. 😂

Anyway, FYI you’re NOT supposed to open any tax refund products from their boxes before you leave the country! And you have to get the papers signed/approved BEFORE and after customs! Makes a few hundred dolla difference!

  • True story: I did not speak any Italian (besides ciao, grazie, and vino) and my husband didn’t speak any English when we first met!!

We used translation apps and some Spanish (he understands because Sardinian sounds similar) but when I first moved here, to a small traditional town where not many people speak English, it was very, very evident that I needed to learn Italian.

Knowing Spanish didn’t help me. The conjugations are completely different and so are most words (dislike when ppl assume I learned bc of that).

And full immersion didn’t force me to learn either, bc my ADHD would just tune out. Apps also easily bored me.

So I looked up online tutors and found Preply, which has thousands of real humans to teach you face to face online, and they can customize your lessons to your learning style and needs.

I’ve been doing Italian lessons twice a week for almost 3 years now, and the online tutors are the main reason why I can speak conversational Italian now!

So if you dream of meeting your partner randomly in another country, or planning to move abroad, and you want to learn the language (or just want to learn one for fun), check out my blog post and please use my link on there for a discount and affil for me! Mylifesamovie.com !

My current tutor Lara is amazing, she does my Italian lessons also in English and Spanish so I don’t forget my native tongue! Also doubles as an unofficial therapist 😂😂

Last, let this bring some hope and inspo to my fellow solo female travelers! If you haven’t found your partner yet, he may be waiting for you in another country!!

  • A pod of 15 Orcas surrounded our small boat in La Ventana, Mexico… my reaction was squealing like a child and I even cried a few tears (don’t tell anyone).

Then, after careful behavioral assessment by our marine biologist guide, we were given permission to swim with them for about 2 minutes!

I cried even more after that, it was one of the most magical moments of my life!

This was an ethical Sea Safari trip with an experienced, animals-first, women-run company. Orca tours do not exist since you cannot predict when they will show up.

There are also many rules and regulations to keep this safe and ethical, so please check out my other posts about it, and for info on how to book this trip, search “orcas” on my blog - mylifesamovie.com!

Is this anyone else’s dream?

  • Everyone raves about the viral Storm Spa in Chongqing China being so cool but meanwhile I was on the verge of a panic attack in there feeling like I fell overboard during the Drake Passage 😳

I am still unsure why an extreme storm was chosen for a spa…but I can at least say the beginning where it’s sunny, and the end where there’s randomly northern lights, was nice!

The ROOMS of the hotel where this spa is at are incredible though! They’re the also-viral ones where there’s a huge clear pool in the rooms!

But fun fact.. it’s not a full sized hotel…they only own a few floors of a skyscraper, which is genius bc they can spend less on maxxing out the rooms and still get booked out!

Oh and the Storm Spa session (30 mins) is included with the room! And the sister hotel includes a photoshoot 🤩

Should I post room tours of them?

All of the information for these viral Chongqing hotels and also Chongqing cyberpunk city in general are on my blog, including the CORRECT links to each hotel (online it’s very confusing bc they all have the same name!)

Also I need to know who would love this and who would hate it, am I the only one?? 😂
  • 10/10 the best self defense lesson and stress relief retreat ever in Fukushima, Japan 🥷🏼😂

You can take samurai lessons with a real life samurai (and famous youtuber) and then practice on the cardboard “enemy”, and later go steam it out at the onsen!

Full info and itinerary on my blog, including how to book it! There’s not many tour options here in Fukushima so the best option is to get there by car 😬
  • I hate that IG has changed so much that each of these photos can’t have their own individual post. Or should they? I think they should, but IG literally says to do Carousels and Reels…then I end up not posting so many unique moments, that I once used to post individually almost every day!

I miss those days and I’m so grateful I started all of this when a single photo post was all you did…a thousand words in one photo.

How do I even explain what each of these photos held? I can write it on my blog but 🤖 will just summarize me in the search results. I can spend hours making a reel, only for the system to analyze it’s not interesting enough ugh because not enough people watched past 6 seconds (yes that is the current algorithm)

So I guess I’ll just keep my memories in my mind and share the tips and pretty photos!

And keep trying to add in those BTS moments, like the last one, which is what we were actually doing most of the time 😂

Definitely a major highlight of this #fukushima trip was the Samurai class and the onsen town, I’d go back there for both! All of I was very stress relieving!

Anyone missing the one photo post days? Or wishing they could take a Samurai class right now? 😬

For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos, one of this generations’ most traveled and most experienced solo travel women in the world! I’ve been to 146 countries so far, and Antarctica 4x over 12 years, with a passion for shattering negative stereotypes about women, animals, cultures, and countries. My goal is to inspire you to travel off the typical path. Follow me @mylifesatravelmovie for expert tips and inspiration!

Instead, I was treated with respect, and I
As I approach my 150th country and 12 years of continuous travel, I’ve decided it’s time to start reflecting back on all of these extraordinary places and experiences, and what better way than to finally answer the top question I get, “What’s been your favorite country?”

My answer is usually, “The next one!”

But now it’s time to go more in depth! Every week I’ll be posting what my favorites have (and have not) been, but in a variety of topics!

Please read the caption of each for the country and why it shattered my expectations!

My passion has and always will be photography and writing, so please let me know if you enjoy posts like this one, and also any “best or worst” topics you’d like me to cover!

Thank you, as always, I appreciate each and every one of you who has followed my journey around the world!

Am I afraid of Orcas? More like obsessed with them. I WISH they’d pop up when I’ve done the Polar Plunge, but so far they’ve only ever approached our small boat in Mexico, where we were permitted to follow regulations and swim with them! I’ve done the Polar Plunge in Antarctica 3x and once in the Arctic, Orcas are always possibly present, but I know that humans are NOT part of their diet. We probably have too many toxins, chemicals, and damaged livers for them. 😁 I’ll be repeating both activities soon, so if you’d like more info on solo travel to Antarctica, the Arctic, or swimming with Orcas in Mexico, (OR joining one of my community’s expeditions there) drop me a comment and I’ll answer, Or check out the links on my profile for all of my global travel tips from over 143 countries and 12 years of traveling!

I’ve climbed Kilimanjaro and Everest Basecamp with no fear of heights issues at all, then I got to China and suddenly developed jelly legs and vertigo 😳😂 Out of the 145 countries I’ve been to so far, China by far wins for most extreme adrenaline activities, especially at extreme heights! Everyone does them so casually there too, even in dresses like me, so maybe I’ve found my adventure people!! I’m already planning to go back to China. I love it that much. Have you been? Wanna join us? ————- For anyone new here: hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the most traveled and most experienced solo travel women in the world! I bought a new phone in China bc you get a decent tax refund, but soon after, it started talking to me in Chinese, and then people started calling it and sending text messages! I honestly felt like I was in a movie, where you find a phone and then suddenly you’re forced to carry out some crazy mission or something! Turns out, for some reason, the girl who sold me the phone put her own SIM card in it to activate it (no idea why), and it was all her friends calling her. 😂 Anyway, FYI you’re NOT supposed to open any tax refund products from their boxes before you leave the country! And you have to get the papers signed/approved BEFORE and after customs! Makes a few hundred dolla difference! ———— New here? Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos @mylifesatravelmovie, one of the world’s most experienced solo female travelers who has been to 146 countries plus Antarctica 4x. True story: I did not speak any Italian (besides ciao, grazie, and vino) and my husband didn’t speak any English when we first met!! Also doubles as an unofficial therapist 😂😂 Last, let this bring some hope and inspo to my fellow solo female travelers! If you haven’t found your partner yet, he may be waiting for you in another country!! If you’d like to see what my life is like, married and living on a vineyard in Sardinia, tap the account at the top that I shared this post with! ———- This post is about: Moving to Italy, learning Italian, living in Italy, married in Italy, life in Sardinia

A pod of 15 Orcas surrounded our small boat in La Ventana, Mexico… my reaction was squealing like a child and I even cried a few tears (don’t tell anyone). ——————- For anyone new: Hi! I’m Alyssa! I am one of the first OG solo female travel blogger/influencers who started traveling 14 years ago and hasn’t stopped! I’ve been to 146 countries solo so far, Antarctica 4x, climbed Kilimanjaro and Everest Basecamp, and my hobby is swimming with apex predators. I’m from the U.S. but moved abroad many years ago, now I live part time on a vineyard in Sardinia, and Tulum! Everyone raves about the viral Storm Spa in Chongqing China being so cool but meanwhile I was on the verge of a panic attack in there feeling like I fell overboard during the Drake Passage 😳 I am still unsure why an extreme storm was chosen for a spa…but I can at least say the beginning where it’s sunny, and the end where there’s randomly northern lights, was nice! And the sister hotel includes a photoshoot 🤩 Should I post room tours of them? All of the information for these viral Chongqing hotels and also Chongqing cyberpunk city in general are on my blog, including the CORRECT links to each hotel (online it’s very confusing bc they all have the same name!) Also I need to know who would love this and who would hate it, am I the only one?? 😂

10/10 the best self defense lesson and stress relief retreat ever in Fukushima, Japan 🥷🏼😂 You can take samurai lessons with a real life samurai (and famous youtuber) and then practice on the cardboard “enemy”, and later go steam it out at the onsen! Full info and itinerary on my blog, including how to book it! There’s not many tour options here in Fukushima so the best option is to get there by car 😬

I hate that IG has changed so much that each of these photos can’t have their own individual post.
