Ah, the ultimate summer road trip and one of the best cross country road trip routes imaginable. A rugged coast line, salty ocean air and that gorgeous California sun.

Starting from Southern California you’ll be driving around 653 miles from Orange County through to Mendocino County. Though you can go from north to south too if you’d like to add some variance to your US trips.

A road trip on the Overseas Highway is not to be missed!
Image: South Beach Helicopters

“Off the Florida Keys, there is a place called Kokomo, that’s where you want to go to get away from it all…” If you want to know what the Beach Boys were talking about, you have to do this road trip!

Of course, Kokomo is not an actual Island in the Florida Keys. But it is the name of a cool poolside bar in Islamorada, Florida Keys. Why not stop there on one of your cross-country US trips?

The Overseas Highway is a breathtaking 4 hour, 159 mile drive from Miami to Key West. You’ll be driving right over the ocean and across a thin chain of islands and bridges, including the famous 7-Mile Bridge. All these bridges connect the 34 islands of the Florida Keys.

The laid back vibes in Key West will blow you away (once you get there). Be sure to indulge in some delicious cuban style food and the famous key lime pie! Plus, there are endless tours and adventures you can go on in the Florida Keys!

Don’t forget to head the the southern most point in continental USA for a photo too – it’s a pretty epic experience and definitely one of the best cross country road trip routes.

Road Trip 3: The Historic Route 66

Road Trip 4: The Road to Hana, Hawaii

The Road To Hana is a road trip that's all about the journey, not the destination.
Image: Mauihi

This 59 mile coastal highway is the rated the top attraction on the island of Maui, so of course it has to make it on the list of best road trips in USA. It’s full of glorious natural sites like waterfalls, tropical flowers and back sand beaches.

Starting in Kahului, this trip around the eastern side of Maui can be done in a day. Or you can take a few days (with an overnight stay in Hana Town) depending on how many sites you want to see.

Pro tip: The Road To Hana is all about the journey, and not the destination. Aloha.

Best Road Trips in USA 5: Arizona To Utah

Horseshoe Bend is one of the amazing stops on an Arizona to Utah road trip.

If you’re a fan of rocky landscapes and waterfalls then this one of those US trips you most definitely have to do! Plus, Alyssa herself has picked out the 10 best stops to make on this road trip!

This is one of our highest read and shared itineraries, meaning everyone agrees it’s one of the best road trips in USA!

Prepare to be amazed by the sight of canyons galore (including the Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon). As well as Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend, Mooney Falls and Zion National Park. And that’s only half of the incredible sights you’ll see!

If you’re up for an extra adventure, head to Monument Valley which is a red-sand desert region on the Arizona-Utah border.

This trip can be done in 10 – 12 days. Take longer if you want to space it out and spend more time at certain sights though throughout your US trips.

Road Trip 6: California’s Route 395

A road trip on California's Route 395 is a gateway to amazing destinations like Yosemite National Park.
Image: Runwaymile

Aka, the gateway to a whole bunch of epic, bucket list worthy, destinations!

Give yourself about a week for this trip (or longer if you really want to explore some of the epic destinations – just don’t forget to invest in a comfortable seat cover for your car during longer road trips).

Starting off at Lake Tahoe, you’ll make your way down to Yosemite National Park.

Pro tip: if the Tioga Pass Road to Yosemite is open, it’s definitely worth taking it! You’ll be so in awe of these two spots that you won’t believe there’s more to come!

From Yosemite you’ll be able to venture down to Mammoth Lakes – a beautiful town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It’s so picturesque and peaceful, you’ll feel like you’re in a Disney Movie! Just keep an eye out for the bears.

After Mammoth Lakes you’ll want to head down to Lone Pine, home of the famous Mount Whitney. She’s the tallest mountain in California for those not in the know.

Finally, you’ll make your way down to Death Valley – an absolute must see, especially Dante’s Peak! If you’re going in the warmer months, make sure you pack lots of snacks, a few gallons of water for the humans in the car, and an extra couple of gallons in case the car overheats.

On second thought, maybe give yourself around 2 weeks for this trip – you won’t regret it, and you’ll have time to fully enjoy one of the best scenic road trips in USA.

Road Trip 7: Great River Road

Road trip down the Great River Road.

3000 miles from Minnesota to Louisiana, and everything in between!

This 20 hour drive will take you along the Mississippi River all the way down the the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana.

So put on your blue suede shoes, and get ready to experience a whole lot of culture and incredible soul-filling food!

Road Trip 8: The Maine Lobster Trail

A road trip down the Maine Lobster Trail is not to be missed!
Image: only.in.maine

Travel along US Route 1 to explore Maine’s estimated 5000 miles of coastline over the course of a few days.

Exploring Maine is easy if you split your trip into three parts: Southern Maine, Mid-Coast Maine and Downiest Maine.

You’ll experience amazing coastal scenery, picturesque lighthouses, the famous Acadia National Park and the largest harvests of lobsters and blueberries in the USA.

This trip won’t disappoint!

Road Trip 9: New York to Toronto (Via Niagara Falls)

A New York to Toronto road trip has to be via Niagara Falls!
Image: advmlagan

Ok so technically this road trip takes you out of the Unites States. But trust us, seeing Niagara Falls from both sides of the US/Canada border is worth it. And, since you’ll be in Canada you might as well check out Toronto, right?!

This 500 mile drive will take you via Syracuse, which is worth a stop for a day or two if you can spare it, before you head through beautiful Buffalo and over to the US side of Niagara Falls.

From there, you’ll drive across the border to the Canadian side of the Falls before driving up to Toronto to experience all this awesome city has to offer!

Pro tip: this may be one of the bet road trips in USA, but take your passport with you for border crossings!

Road Trip 10: Eastern Seaboard

The eastern seaboard makes for an epic road trip!

If you didn’t love the East Coast already, this trip will make you never want to leave it.

Give yourself around 10 days to travel from Boston to New York City to Philadelphia to Washington, phew!

You’ll get to experience a whole lot of history, politics, fashion, food, university towns and stunning scenery.

Pro tip: if you’re not in the mood for driving, take this trip via the train instead. It’s better for the environment, super relaxing and you’ll see even more amazing scenery than you would while driving. Plus, you can channel your inner Serena van der Woodsen at New York City’s Grand Central Station (cute!)

Road Trip 11: Seattle To Portland

best U.S. road trips mylifesamovie.com

Another of the best road trips in USA: The Pacific Northwest city trip!

If you’ve got a few days, we recommend you take this trip via the I-90, aka the scenic route.

Starting off in Seattle, you’ll drive through the beautiful Snoqualmie Pass and the gorgeous towns of Ellensburg and Yakima. You’ll then cross the Columbia River and head into Mount Hood National Forest. Be prepared for some stunning hikes here! From there you’ll head to Portland for some epic and super hipster experiences.

Alternatively, if you’re wanting to take this trip as a weekend getaway take the I-5 S straight from Seattle to Portland. There’ll be a few cool stops along the way on this 3 hour drive, and you’ll have some time to explore Seattle and Portland either side of your trip.

Road Trip 12: East Coast To West Coast

San Francisco is the last stop on the East Coast to West Coast road trip.
Image: Sammy Schukert on Unsplash.com

For those of you who are in it for the long haul – you’ll want to set aside at least a month for this great American road trip!

Staring in New York City, had down the East Coast, drive along the South Coast before making your way up to the West Coast, ending the trip in San Francisco.

There’ll be so many amazing stops and places to explore along the way! Some highlights include Philly, Williamsburg, Cape Hatteras, Charleston, New Orleans, San Antonio, Austin, Santa Fe, The Grand Canyon, Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite and if you’re up for it, Napa Valley post San Francisco!

Don’t even get us started on the highlights of each of these destinations – you’ll be here all night (in a good way of course)!

Road Trip 13: Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic US road trips.
Image: Nathan Farber

This is considered to be one of the most scenic drives on the East Coast of the USA. Mainly because two national parks are connected by the 469 mile long Blue Ridge Parkway.

That’s right, you’ll drive through Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Fun fact: the Blue Ridge Parkway is the most visited road controlled by the US National Parks System, so obviously it has to be included in a list of the best scenic road trips in USA.

Road Trip 14: The Great Northern Expedition

Chicago is one of the stops on the Great Northern Expedition road trip.
Image: Aaron Bean on Unsplash.com

Like the East to West Coast Trip, but covering the top part of the country!

This trip will take around 3 weeks (or longer if you’d like). Starting off in New York City (where so many great adventures begin), you’ll make your way across the north and end your road trip in the San Juan Islands just out of Seattle.

You’ll be blown away with all the amazing places to see and explore. Highlights include Pittsburg, Chicago (where you will literally be blown away by the wind!), Madison, Minneapolis, Badlands National Park, Yellowstone National Park and of course, Seattle.

Road Trip 15: San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway, Colorado

Charming Telluride is one of the stops on the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway road trip!
Image: Kaitlyn Holbein

Often described as the ‘All American Road’, this 233 mile loop multi-highway cuts through some of the most spectacular and mountainous terrain in North America.

You’ll drive through/visit some historic mining towns like Durango, Silverton and Telluride as well as a ton of (well-preserved) ghost towns.

This road also passes the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park, where you can visit ancient Pueblo cliff dwellings on a ranger-guided tour.

Fun fact: the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway is also referred to as the ‘Million Dollar Highway’ because of its million dollar views!

So you’re probably getting ready to hit the road to experience one of these epic USA road trips as we speak, right?! Before you head off, don’t forget to comment below with which of these epic road trips you’ve already done, and which one you’ll be doing next!

  • Before the term “influencer” or “content creator” existed, I was one of the original travel bloggers, unknowingly helping pioneer what is now a multibillion dollar Creator Industry.

I helped transform solo female travel from taboo to trendy, and taught thousands of people how to work remotely and build a brand.

I’ve done so much more than just create content, although hardly anyone sees the behind the scenes. And it’s been 14 years that I’ve owned the title of travel bloggers/influencer so…

Allow me to re-introduce myself.

I am Alyssa Ramos, the founder of My Life’s a Travel Movie brand, one of the very first travel “influencers” and one of the pioneers of the creator industry, of normalizing solo female travel today, of influencer-hosted group trips, and of getting paid to travel via social media!

I started my blog in 2012, then started using social media to promote it in 2014, earning me the title of “influencer”but what was never fully seen was the entrepreneur behind it who helped create an entire new industry with no money and when hardly anyone believed it would work.

Soon after I became one of the first travel blogger/influencers to make a full time living from it, I was asked to speak at conferences, interviewed in the press, and I was one of the very first people to make the courses about how it’s done (they didn’t exist when I started!)

I had a big dream to get paid to travel the world, and to normalize solo female travel, and once I succeeded, I kept going.

Today I am not only a travel influencer, but also a humanitarian, animal activist, a trailblazer, an author, speaker, writer, entrepreneur and…one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world.

So far I’ve been to over 150 countries (off the 197 list), all 7 continents (Antarctica 4x), and I average 20 countries per year.

Now I’m going bigger. I’m launching a travel show, more speaker events, writing another book, and I’ve started the Travel Tribe Foundation to give back through my group trips.

Thank you everyone who has been here with me for so long, and welcome to anyone new!

  • I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳

But! We made it, even with a massive storm approaching, and I experienced one of the most incredible “my life’s a travel movie” moments in my 12 years of continuous solo traveling!!

I truly felt like I was in a movie! The ship is an old cruise ship that hit rocks and slowly sank as it washed ashore on Roderick’s Bay. It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend)

The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!)

I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world.

Would I go back to the shipwreck? Probably not. That boat ride was terrifying. But I’d go back to see more of the islands in the Solomon’s, there’s so many!

Would you brave the ride to get to this shipwreck?

For any fellow extreme adventurers, my Solomon Islands travel tips and itinerary is on my website linked in bio!

  • D. R. Congo and Silverback Gorillas both have reputations for being extremely dangerous, and that’s true, to an extent. But hear me out.

First a disclaimer: I am one of the most experienced solo female travelers in the world, and I also have a degree in Animal Science plus extensive experience with wild animals. All of my animal encounters are ethical, researched, and done with professionals. My goal is to promote responsible animal tourism that actually benefits and protects the animals, Don’t try to do any of them on your own!

Ok so the Mountain Gorillas! Yes, they can be extremely dangerous! However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious)

Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts!

In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers!

I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle)

Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..:

I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see!

For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio!

  • I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! This one was a double check: seeing a wild Polar Bear and reaching my farthest latitude north (so far): 82 degrees North!

For reference, the geographic North Pole is at 90 degrees North, so we were very close to it! Maybe one day I’ll reach it!

There’s only one tattoo shop in Longyearbyen, therefore it’s officially the northernmost tattoo shop! And I also have tattoos from the Southernmost tattoo shop in Ushuaia for my 4 trips to Antarctica!

Anyone else have cool tattoos?

  • This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂

People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times!

Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂
  • I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 🙅‍♀️🐍 It really just came up to me like that when I was sitting on the beach on an island in New Caledonia!

I had been contemplating going swimming with the turtles nearby, but changed my mind after I saw this!

This was a “Blake-banded Sea Krait”, common to this area in the South Pacific Islands, I’ve heard several divers say they’ve seen them! But no thanks, I prefer sharks. 😂

Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it).

What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?!

  • I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Swipe to see each caption for the name and location of these beauties (and some just bizarre!)

I have a full list with links of the hotels here and ones I’ve posted about, linked on my bio! Please use those links if you book these places bc most don’t pay me to give this free publicity so the way I can monetize is using the links, it costs you nothing, and helps me a lot, thanks!! 😁😁😁

The currently viral @shebara resort in Saudi Arabia with UFO looking over-water bungalows! Costs around $2-4k per night and doesn’t include the transfer to get to the island…

Check out my Shebara blog post for full details!

Probably the most bizarre hotel I’ve ever stayed at is this one in Turkmenistan. It’s known as “the wedding hotel” bc it’s where most people have their receptions, but the ground floor wing behind me is open for tourists….except, I was the only one there and it seemed like it had been empty for a while..

You can’t book hotels on your own in Turkmenistan, you have to take a tour and have a letter of invitation. Full blog post with that info too.

I’m scheduled to return to Turkmenistan in October and also next year with @mylifesatraveltribe (sold out though, join the waitlist!)

I never would have guessed I’d end up living on a vineyard and recalling @pacheca.group The Wine House as inspo for a future rental project!!

These wine barrel rooms are in Portugal. Who thinks I should try to build some on our vineyard in Sardinia Italy?

One of the bougiest hotel experiences is at @anantaramaiaseychelles ! The villas are beautiful but it was the 24/7 butler service that I can’t forget!

The Seychelles was my 100th country, and they brought me enough wine bottles to write out the number in my private jacuzzi!

One of my all time favorites is @tulia_zanzibar 😻 it’s one of the most beautiful, thoughtfully designed, sustainable resorts I’ve experienced, AND it has a water slide!

Scotland surprised me a lot with its incredible hotel options! Namely, all of the castles! There’s so many of them!!!

An incredibly u
  • Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Yes, I swam with him (several times) Would you dare?

This is Panchito the Crocodile, he lives alone in Casa Cenote which is close to Tulum. Crocs are not commonly found in cenotes (pronounced “seh-note-ay” and are deep fresh water reserves throughout the Yucatán peninsula ) and no one is really sure how he got there.

Panchito is allegedly “friendly”, but it’s more like “unbothered until provoked”.

Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡

Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater).

Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real!

I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com

I thought I was going to shipwreck trying to get to an existing shipwreck in the Solomon Islands…and I was traveling solo with just a fisherman driving me on his small boat. 😳 But! It’s only half sunk, so you can swim around it (it’s super creepy and dangerous, don’t do it alone), and since it’s completely unregulated, you can also climb it and zip line into the water (also dangerous, can’t recommend) The angle of the ship also created one of the most vibrant marine sanctuaries I’ve seen in a while, with lots of actual colorful coral and fish (including clown fish!) I went to Solomon Islands after my second trip to Papua New Guinea, on my quest to slow solo travel to every country in the world. ———————- For anyone new here: Hi! D. However, many of them have been socialized, and are therefore accepting of human visitors (and very curious) Gorilla trekking tourism is what protects these beautiful animals, because it generates more money to have them alive, so it forces the govs and other orgs to implement strict rules and anti-poaching efforts! In fact, these gorillas were almost poached to extinction before trekking became popular, and now most of the trackers (people paid to find the gorillas to trek to) are former poachers! I’ve gone gorilla trekking 5 times and it’s always a safe and beautiful experience (the trek is difficult though and can be up to 8 hours through thick jungle) Now about D.R. Congo…. Shortly after my first solo travels there, Virunga National Park closed and remains closed due to armed conflict with rebel groups..: I still went to visit Goma several more times, and I truly love Congo, but I will be waiting with anticipation for the safety to increase, because the gorillas in DRC were my top favorite see! For more info on DRC or the other 150 countries I’ve traveled solo to, please check out my blog linked in bio! ———- Please follow me @mylifesatravelmovie for more extreme adventures with purpose 💖 #alyssaramostravels #mylifeisatravelmovie #mylifeisatravelmovie

I have a “bucketlist tattoo” that I add to when I complete a major bucketlist check! ——————- For anyone new here: Hi! This is my 3rd year being an American living on a vineyard in Italy (married the owner!) and I def have a lot of tea/wine to spill about it 😂 People have this dreamy or glamorous “Emily in Rome”-esque idea about traveling to Italy, falling in love, preferably with someone who owns a vineyard, and living happily ever after…well I did that, and it can be a bit more “difficile vita” than “dolce vita” at times! Shall I give the full interview for the “real Netflix documentary about an American living in Italy”?? 😂

I’ve swam with Orcas, a crocodile, and my for-fun hobby is shark diving, but I draw the line at poisonous swimming snakes. 😂 Animal safety tip: as an experienced animal encounteress, i never ever suggest provoking or trying to “fight off” any dangerous animal that isn’t actively trying to attack you. Stay calm and still and let it pass like I did in this video. Then, feel free to run. (Jk I’d still suggest carefully and slowly backing a way, keeping an eye on it). What would you do if you saw a swimming snake?! —————— For anyone new here: Hi! I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

I’ve stayed at over 500 hotels in my 12 years of traveling to around 20 countries per year, here’s 20 that absolutely blew my mind and I cannot forget!!

Yes, that is a real, wild Crocodile. Recently for the first time ever Panchito attacked a swimmer because some unintelligent people were throwing rocks at him to try to provoke a reaction for a video 😡 Even this last time when I was there, while I was freediving in the cenote, other tourists were loud and slashing at Panchito, causing him to interrupt his tanning session, jump into the water, and dive under the mangroves until the people were gone (I watched all of it and was honestly a bit scared when he came swimming towards me underwater). Anyway! If you want a unique wildlife experience, check out Casa Cenote but do not disturb Panchito!!! Or any wildlife! Animal karma is real! I live in Tulum half-time and have lots of posts and tips about it and also this cenote, all on my website along with tips for over 140 countries - MyLifesAMovie.com ————————— For anyone new here: Hi! I’m Alyssa Ramos of @mylifesatravelmovie - one of the most traveled and most experienced solo travel women in the world!
